As he stares at the ceiling, he wonders what would have happened if he didn’t stop and play hero. If he didn’t try to rush in and help, if he just had pretended he didn’t hear anything and moved along, didn’t go into the alley to check if anything was wrong.
It would have been easier, he muses, I wouldn’t have to be here now.
Even as he thinks that, he finds that he still doesn’t regret his decision. I did the right thing. It wasn’t my fault.
