Work Text:
Megumi wakes up blearily, his arm going out blindly to grab onto Yuji, pausing as all it hits is empty air, but he dismisses any worry, Yuji usually goes on runs early in the day and makes some breakfast for the two of them.
With a groan, he sits up, cracking his neck and shaking feeling back into his joints, reaching out to the nightstand to grab his phone, he checks the time, only 9 in the morning, not a bad time to wake up at, especially on a Saturday.
He spends a few minutes browsing his phone, waiting for Yuji to get back from his run, deciding to get out of bed and hop in the shower as he waits.
After a quick shower, he steps into the living room, raising an eyebrow as he looks out the window, trying to spot Yuji, he doesn't usually go very far on his runs, and he’s been gone for at least an hour now, Megumi’s starting to get a little concerned honestly.
He pulls his phone out again, sending Yuji a text, furrowing his brow when it says it can't be sent, so he sends it again, and the same thing happens.
Chewing the inside of his cheek, he restarts his phone, but the same thing happens, he decides to try to call Yuji, straight to voicemail, multiple times he tries, multiple times it goes to voicemail.
With a frustrated huff, he pockets his phone, summoning forth a divine dog and telling it to go find Yuji.
He sniffs around for a moment, whines, and walks into the kitchen, sniffing at the floor before stopping in front of the counter, on the counter is a mug of coffee, abandoned but still steaming.
Megumi hums, narrowing his eyes as he scans the kitchen down, absentmindedly petting his dog as he tries to put together the situation.
Yuji disappearing, his texts and calls not going through, their dog finding out the trail ends in their kitchen, none of this makes sense.
He hums, and with a thought Mahoraga thunks into existence behind him, already looking around with his non-existent eyes, the wings where the eyes would be shifting like antenna, a large white hand on its chin.
Yuji would probably laugh at how human Mahoraga has become in the past decade.
After a long minute, Mahoraga stands as tall as it can without bumping the ceiling, its wheel softly clicking, letting Megumi let out a breath he didn't know he was holding in.
Suddenly, he’s two feet in the air, Mahoraga, the asshole, picked him up.
He crosses his arms, trying to look at least moderately dignified when he’s hoisted by his torso like a child, and looks up at Mahoraga’s face.
“What’s the deal?” Predictably, the shikigami doesn't answer, instead flashing a toothy grin and a thumbs up with its free hand, and unsheathes the sword embedded in the back of its forearm.
Purple energy gathers around the blade, before gushing into the blade, purple lines of energy trailing down the blade, then down Mahoraga’s arm, then his torso, and eventually, its entire body is covered in the purple lines.
With a silent huff of air, Mahoraga suddenly slices forward, Megumi’s eyes blow wide as a rift opens in his kitchen, he can feel the rift pulling him towards it, he looks back at Mahoraga, who’s grinning still, and opens his mouth to ask a question he knows he won't get an answer to, but it’s too late, Mahoraga winds back and throws him through the rift.
Silently screaming, he flies face-first toward the rift, he does his best to right himself, watching with wide eyes as the purple swirls around him, dragging him further inwards.
After an agonizingly long time, he’s spat out harshly onto some grass, quickly pushing himself up and pulling out a cursed katana from his shadow as he glances around. He notices a deep crater dug in the forest, except for where it splits, like it decided to fork, or maybe someone had blocked it.
A few moments later, he deems himself alone in the forest and drops his katana back into the shadow.
He sighs and pulls out his phone, clicking it on and checking the time, frowning as it looks like it’s constantly rewinding backward, ignoring that for now, he finds Yuji’s name in his contacts, and calls him up again, hoping that whatever Mahoraga did at least brought him closer to his husband.
Much to his surprise, his call goes through, and almost instantly it’s picked up by Yuji, who sounds much more shaken than he has in years, dismissing any frustration he’d have with Yuji.
After a moment, it's apparent that Megumi is gonna have to start the conversation, and so he opens his mouth to do just that, deciding to start walking in a random direction in the forest as he does.
