She couldn't sleep.
Just another night in a row.
She looked at the clock mounted on her wall. Almost twelve yet again.
Amy sat on a stool in her kitchen, tapping on her marble countertop. Her PJs kept her warm and comfy, but she had no sleep to take her to bed.
She sighed knowing she was probably going to be up late again.
No worries though, she loved seeing her shooting star.
It had traveled across the sky every night at the same time. She didn't know if it was the same star but its bright glow made it different from the rest.
Her thoughts about the star were interrupted by her clock striking twelve. She gasped in surprise and ran up to the window in her kitchen to get a good look at the sky.
She drew up her blinds, opened her window, and pushed open her shutters. The cool air of the night instantly hit her face. She took in a deep breath before gazing upwards.
There it was.
The same shooting star that has traveled across the night sky for ages has returned yet again. Even though it was traveling at such a high speed, the vast openness of the sky made it look slow. It looked like it was drifting peacefully among the stars.
It had a slight tail of smooth yellow following behind it. It glowed. Its path was never dark, never empty.
Her eyes followed while it glistened its shining best as it soared by.
It brought her so much comfort.
She was relieved that at least she wasn't alone in the dead of night. Her shooting star was here to keep her company for a while
Amy looked towards her counter and realized she didn't bring her notebook. She had been writing in it ever since her lack of sleep was becoming a nuisance.
She retrieved it and opened up a fresh page to jot down a reflection of how she felt today.
As she transformed her feelings into ink, she took some glances up at the sky to see her star growing further and further away.
She frowned knowing that she would be alone again.
Her star was never alone though.
They had all the other stars to keep them company. Who did she have?
Well, she had her friends. That's a start.
Her eyes looked back up to see that the shooting star was long gone. Its fast pace must have carried it to another galaxy by now.
Fast pace. That reminded her of…
“Sonic,” she whispered.
She was unaware that she had written his name in her journal.
She stared at his name as she thought about him.
When didn't she think about him?
She tried not to, she really did. Even though she matured past the stages of chasing after him and smothering him with love, she still had feelings for him.
She huffed as she began to battle her heart.
“I'll just write down all the things I supposedly like about Sonic just to prove I don't like him like that anymore,” she thought.
He had nice, long quills. A cool blue tone colored his fur. He had a heart of gold. Gorgeous green eyes. That sly smirk he liked to do. His determination to save the day.
Man, he was so dreamy.
She began writing and got so lost in describing every feature about Sonic that she didn't realize her shooting star had somehow made a return.
It began to dive down towards her house at a blazing speed. It even began to shine at one point.
Amy kept writing, unaware of the ball of light approaching her home.
“He's got this way of just sweeping me off my feet sometimes. Well, he does do that actually,” she mumbled as she moved on to a list the times Sonic saved her.
Her eyes twitched when a soft glow from her peripheral suddenly appeared. She rubbed her eyes and continued writing.
“Gosh, if the sun is peeking out already I must have been up for hours,” she said to herself.
“You're still awake?”
Amy gasped hearing a sudden voice. She closed her journal and looked out the window to see an aura of soft yellow.
For a second she thought she saw a star. Luckily for her, it was just Sonic.
Well, Super Sonic.
His red eyes looked soft as he gently scanned her face. She looked tired but now a hint of surprise colored her.
"Sonic?" she asked, not yet believing what she was seeing.
He smiled at her in his snarky way and chuckled. “It's best you get to bed, Amy. I know it's a bit past your bedtime,” he said.
Amy snapped out of her trance when she heard his voice. It was Sonic alright. She was happy to see him. She always was. Even if she tried to hide it, her smile always betrayed her.
“Hey, how do you know it's past my bedtime?” she asked.
Sonic floated closer to her window as he looked up at the sky.
“You always head to bed after I pass by your house,” he said.
Amy let out a long “Oh” before she realized something.
“Wait,” she said, planting a hand on her cheek as she leaned on her window's wooden border. “You mean to tell me that was you all along?” she asked.
She held her breath when Sonic basically dipped his head next to her, still looking at the sky.
Her cheeks felt warm and she couldn't pry her eyes from his soft glowing form. He was usually a little unbearable to be around when he was super because the power he gave off was much too strong for her liking. However, he wasn't exerting that kind of power right now. He was gentle and breathtaking.
His sharp spikes looked a bit soft to the touch and even though their upward position made him look bigger and intimidating, she knew he was still Sonic under there. His cocky nature seemed to be dormant at the moment, replaced with a gentle protectiveness you could sense.
“Yeah, I usually make some trips over to your guys' homes to make sure you're all safe,” he said. He let his head down to look her in the eyes.
Her emerald eyes were so big that he saw his vibrant reflection within. He knew his eyes were no longer green which gave him the excuse to admire hers like precious gems.
Seeing her sheepishly look away made him smile. He was still getting used to the Amy who hid her emotions from him. She was maturing and fast. She was probably faster than him at that.
He didn't want to admit it out loud but he missed when she would hug him and love him openly. He knew she still loved him, just not like before.
Her hints of love were now more subtle and he loved trying to get her to show him more. His heart would beat just a little faster when she puffed up her cheeks to show her annoyance at his teasing. She was adorable to him. He wouldn’t let her know that though.
“I thought you were a shooting star,” she confessed.
He turned to give a cheeky eyebrow raise. “Really?” he said with a smirk.
Amy nodded, “Yeah, I thought you were a special star who would come see me every night before I went to bed. I didn't know it was you.”
He glided away from her before turning around and setting his hands on her window. He was so close to her that only Amy was in his line of sight. His red eyes seemed to glow when he observed her face. Her eyes were speckled with a sense of surprise and she suddenly held a magnetic force, drawing him in.
“Well get some sleep so I can see you again,” he said, gently rubbing his nose on hers.
Amy giggled and leaned over to give him a quick kiss on the cheek.
Sonic's red eyes enlarged and he was left stuttering something under his breath.
He rubbed his nose on hers to get a reaction but he never expected a kiss.
It was just a kiss on the cheek. No big deal.
Right?
“Alright then, goodnight Sonic,” she yawned. She slowly walked away from her window leaving Super Sonic outside. It took him a second to recover, but he held his cheek once he did.
He smiled as he held it, relishing her even after she was gone.
“Oh, Amy. Someday I'll get the courage to give you something special,” he whispered.
After a few moments, he leaned into her house to draw the curtains. He closed her window and her shutters. He pressed his hands and forehead against the shutters as they clicked shut.
He smiled before he turned back to the starry sky. He looked over his shoulder to see her bedroom light go off.
She was safe.
Satisfied, Super Sonic bolted up towards the sky again, regaining his place among the stars.
