Work Text:
As soon as Tommy made the joke... he should have just stopped talking to them then and there. He is uncomfortable and well... if he was uncomfortable with everything a teenager does than can he even call himself a man?
Is what Dream would say... well Sapnap would probably make fun of him too.
He had been busy creating content, editing his own videos, there was so much on his mind. It was like a flurry of a storm, like scrolling through tiktok, skipping past videos that look unrelated to his interest but little did he know... this will come to bite him in the back.
The jokes overflow like a volcano, burning houses that stood too close to the lava. They had built their houses there thinking that the volcano would protect them.
Why they think so nobody knows. Maybe an attachment to something toxic was a human trait.
This action will have consequences...
Dream wished that life was a video game that he could redo all over again to make different choices. Some choices he wouldn't have made again, he would have been more thorough, said lesser things.
But that is what pours out of his fingers, his mouth. Words that could express what he felt and what he meant... it seemed endless.
With great power... comes great responsibility... and yet Peter Parker couldn't have known that giving the formula to Doctor Connors would lose him Gwen's father.
Dream guessed that it was what he deserved... but it has been two years... maybe even less... he has no idea given his work ethic led him to believe that it has only been days... no... months have passed.
People who he once called his friends have turned against him. Doctor Kurt Conners has released the lizard formula to the world—the cure. There is no simple cure for this.
He should just ignore them and focus on what he has now. But many people are still whispering in his ear about what has happened, many voices. He is used to the voices, or so he thought.
He is no robot, he is emotional, impulsive and loud in his thoughts. But now... he has an oddly felt calm as if he was coding pixel by pixel, a real human into a video game. A game that had all the opponent's pieces and his one bishop, rook and king.
He had all the evidence, all the cards... and yet no one on the lizard's side would believe him... would help him make the cure. They had abandoned their humanity for more power, for less humanity. Because humanity was a weakness... right?
The chess game was over. Just flip the board, there was no turning back.
This action will have consequences....
He sees his friends that would support him. Sapnap charging into his room and demanding that he get off twitter and join in the event they were supposed to be playing.
George and his mom whisper outside his door to remind him to eat and yes he isn't a robot he is human like everyone else.
Sam whose a silent presence with the occasional questions on whether he had eaten, stretched or taken a shower.
Ant asking if he was okay if he needed any help or sending him clips and words of encouragement from his fans.
The whole of humanity hasn't been turned to lizards. Those who stayed away found their own cure, did their own research, and still supported him. Maybe it was just in one city but he didn't want Gwen Stacy to get involved, to get hurt. So he takes a bite out of the food that hasn't gone cold, cuddles with patches as she looks at him with a deadpan expression, plays a little bit of Minecraft, laughs at the bugs with Awesamdude and his brother.
There was still hope, there was still tomorrow to look forward to. And seeing Sapnap's friends defend him online shows that there were still friends that he could make, that would defend him through thick and thin despite some of them having no power of their own.
In their universe, in their world, there was still a spot for Dream. His former friends have reaped what they sowed and will be left in the sewers where they belong as lizard people. While Dream goes to higher heights he cannot help but remember the Doctor the lizard used to be, encouraging him and guiding him.
It would be a stepping stone for more bigger villains, but Dream will be ready, he will learn from his mistakes and look at it all with an objective look. If he looks to his friends who had stuck with him through everything with the lack of it then it was still fine.
A flutter of a butterfly's wing, could only hover near the ground, living its short life in it's garden as the swan soar up high in the sky.
