Work Text:
martyn scrambled to his paws. he was in the bar again, when just a moment ago he was fighting oli.
an aching pain resided in his chest. dried blood stained his shirt.
he could only assume everything had gone as planned.
surprisingly he wasn’t very dizzy. the feeling must’ve subsided before he woke up. still, he struggled to regain balance as he walked to the door. once he was out of the bar, he started towards the stairs, but paused. did he really want to go back?
oli had won, and martyn had done what he had to. he didn’t want to go down now, when oli must be celebrating. or something, he had no idea. he’d approach the rat when everyone came back to the rattic.
slowly he padded back to the bar.
it had been a few hours before he heard any pawsteps. martyn was leaning against the bar counter when the door swung open and two rats walked in. he perked his ears as they did.
he was quick to identify them as bek and eloise. he gave a small wave, though he was disappointed it wasn’t oli walking in to greet him.
it was rather quiet, other than bek and eliose’s talking, and when bek asked a few times for a drink or two. martyn was almost tempted to get up and leave.
he was in his own head when the duo left, and hadn’t realized they were gone until he snapped back to reality. for a minute he just stood there, then finally made his way back to the door.
upon leaving, he could see a few more rats scattered here and there. he looked around, clasping his paws together anxiously, scanning the rattic for a glimpse of gray fur.
he began walking aimlessly around the rattic, nearly bumping into scott a few times as his wandering became pacing. his ears flattened against his skull and he stopped walking for a moment. had oli even come back to the rattic?
did they want to??
suddenly panicked, he raced for the stairs, halting only when he heard claws scraping wood.
he stood for a moment until he could glimpse oli’s face.
“garbage rat!” he yelped.
“marty!! I didn’t expect to see you waiting for me!” oli said as he hopped up the steps to meet martyn, “you must be desperate, if you’d wait for somerat like myself.”
“am not!!” martyn retaliated. oli stuck their tongue out at him.
martyn stepped back to let oli come up into the rattic. as oli made their way next to martyn, his ears raised slightly and he sat down, oli following suit.
“i thought something happened,” martyn said, “for a second i even thought you didn’t want to come back!”
“no,” oli replied, “when the others were leaving, i found garbage scattered by the chairs. i went to pick it up, and one of the cats spotted me. i still got the trash, though!”
“yeah. of course you did,” martyn mumbled, shifting slightly so he was closer to oli.
“you doing okay? you know, after court..”
his ears perked at the question. he didn’t answer for a moment.
“probably,” was all he could muster. oli tilted their head at him.
“okay..” he murmured in response, giving an anxious glance to martyn’s paws. he knew why, but neither said anything about it.
oli got up almost immediately, hesitating, before walking away. martyn just watched, not bothering to get up and follow.
he wanted to say more, but oli had other things to do, he assumed.
he’d say it some other day.
