Work Text:

The late afternoon sun dripped through the blinds in Akari’s living room, painting stripes of light across the plush purple cushions of her sofa. The air hummed with the quiet efficiency of the city outside, a low thrum that was a constant backdrop to life in Linkon City. Inside, however, a comfortable stillness reigned. Akari, nestled amidst a pile of soft blankets, was diligently scribbling in a small, worn notebook. Her brow was furrowed in concentration, her pink lips pursed as she chewed lightly on the end of her pen.

Sylus watched her from his perch on the armchair. Even in repose, his presence filled the room. His silver hair, usually meticulously styled, was endearingly tousled, strands falling across his forehead as he leaned forward, observing his “kitten.” He’d traded his usual tailored suit for a simple, dark grey t-shirt that stretched comfortably across his broad shoulders, and black trousers. Mephisto, his mechanical crow, sat silently on the armrest, its obsidian eyes blinking occasionally, mimicking its master’s watchful attentiveness.

“What has captured your attention so fiercely, Sweetie?” Sylus finally asked, his voice a low, melodic drawl that could send shivers down the spines of hardened criminals, but in Akari’s presence, held only warmth.

Akari jumped slightly, startled from her thoughts. “Oh! Hey, Syl,” she said, a bright smile lighting up her face. She quickly flipped the notebook closed, a faint blush rising on her cheeks.

Sylus raised a sardonic eyebrow, a playful glint in his crimson eyes. “Such secrecy? Are you plotting my demise, Miss Hunter?”

Akari laughed, a melodious sound that always made something soften within him. “Don’t be ridiculous. Just… thoughts.”

He leaned forward, a predatory grace in his movements. “Intriguing thoughts, clearly. Care to share?”

Akari hesitated for a fleeting moment before sighing good-naturedly. She knew better than to try and keep secrets from Sylus. He had a way of unearthing them, gently or not, that was rather unnerving. She opened the notebook, revealing pages filled with neatly written words, some crossed out with bold, decisive lines.

Sylus leaned closer, his sharp eyes scanning the page. His lips quirked into a knowing smile. “Baby names,” he stated, his voice a low hum.

Akari nodded, her cheeks flushing deeper. “Yeah. Just… brainstorming. It feels more real now, you know? Six months already.” She gently patted the small swell of her belly, a gesture that always brought a peculiar tenderness to Sylus’s features.

He reached out and covered her hand with his, his touch surprisingly gentle for a man known for his ruthlessness. “It does. Time flies when you’re… preparing for a tiny, demanding overlord.”

Akari giggled. “Exactly! So, I was just… thinking. Trying to find something that fits.”

Sylus’s eyes scanned the list again, a playful amusement dancing within them. “Let’s see… ‘Jax,’ ‘Rylo,’ ‘Kai’…” He paused, a smirk playing on his lips. “And what’s this? ‘Sylus Jr.’?” he said teasingly.

Akari groaned and snatched the notebook back, her face a picture of mock exasperation. “No, I’m not naming him Sylus Jr. if he’s a boy. That’s silly.”

“Silly?” Sylus feigned offense, placing a hand dramatically over his heart. “My name is a legacy, kitten. A symbol of power and influence.”

“And a giant target on his back,” Akari countered, rolling her eyes. “Besides, can you imagine calling out ‘Sylus Jr., clean your room!’?”

Sylus chuckled, the sound rich and warm. “Point taken. Though, I doubt our child will have the audacity to create a mess in the first place.”

He reached for the notebook again, his fingers brushing against hers, sending a familiar thrill through her. He pointed to another name on the list. “And you think naming her ‘Kari’ is good? You just took the ‘A’ out of your name.” He playfully scratched the name out with the back of his fingernail.

Akari playfully shoved him. “Hey! It’s a cute name!”

“It’s derivative, Sweetie. We can do better than that.” His red eyes gleamed with intellectual challenge. “Let’s approach this with some strategy. What qualities do we want the name to reflect?”

Akari leaned back against the cushions, considering. “For a girl… I like names that sound strong but also… gentle. Something beautiful, but not too frilly.”

“Hmm,” Sylus mused, tapping his finger against his chin. “Seraphina? Evangeline?”

Akari wrinkled her nose. “Too… delicate. And kind of long.”

“Fair enough. What about Adeline? Astrid?”

“Adeline… I like that,” Akari admitted. “It has a nice ring to it. Astrid… maybe. Let’s keep that one on the maybe pile.”

They continued like this for a while, tossing out names, and discussing their meanings and sounds. Sylus, surprisingly, had a wide range of suggestions, drawing from old Earth mythology, ancient warrior names, and even some more obscure celestial references. Akari, in turn, brought practicality and warmth to the process, focusing on names that felt familiar and comforting.

“What about boys’ names?” Akari asked, flipping to a fresh page in the notebook.

Sylus leaned back, a thoughtful expression on his face. “For a son… someone worthy to carry on the… family business,” he said with a mischievous wink.

Akari playfully punched his arm. “Don’t even joke about that. I want him to be his own person, not just a mini-you.”

“Of course, kitten,” Sylus said softly, his gaze sincere. “But strength, intelligence… those are qualities I admire. And perhaps a touch of… rebelliousness.”

Akari laughed. “Oh, he’ll definitely get that from you.”

“Indeed,” Sylus agreed with a satisfied smirk. “What about Orion?”

“Too… out there?” Akari suggested.

A sense of quiet focus settled over the room. Sylus, his arm draped around Akari’s shoulders, traced the names on the notepad with his finger.

“What about… Liam?” he mused, the name rolling off his tongue with a certain unexpected gentleness.

Akari considered it, her brow furrowed in thought. “Liam… I like it. It sounds… kind.”

“Strong too,” Sylus added.

A comfortable silence settled between them, broken only by the hum of the city outside. Then, Akari spoke, her voice soft.

"So Liam will be our baby boy's name and Adeline is our baby girl's name"

They looked at each other, a silent understanding passing between them. Liam. Elara. The names felt right, resonating with a quiet strength and delicate beauty that mirrored their hopes for their child.

Sylus gently took the pen from Akari’s hand and carefully wrote the two names at the top of a fresh page, circling them with deliberate precision. Liam. Lyra. A son or a daughter, either name held a promise of love and a future filled with possibilities.

He leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to Akari’s forehead, his hand resting protectively on her belly. “Perfect,” he murmured.

Akari leaned into his touch, her hand covering his. The laughter and playful arguments of the afternoon had given way to a quiet contentment, a shared joy in the simple act of choosing a name, a first step in welcoming their child into the world. The city lights twinkled outside, mirroring the hopeful gleam in their eyes. In the cozy warmth of Akari’s apartment, the future, with all its uncertainties, suddenly felt a little less daunting, a little more filled with love. They had found their names, a small but significant milestone on the path to parenthood, a testament to the unexpected tenderness that could bloom not only in Linkon City but even in the heart of the N109 Zone.
