Family Don’t End in Blood

Summary:

Jack?” Sam called out, despite the fact that babies couldn’t talk back. He peaked his head into the room and immediately say the little guy.

The baby was lying on the ground, eyes golden as Sam approached him. The screams quieted when he saw him.

Father? A angelic voice rang in Sam’s head.

“Oh, no. Jack I’m not your father.” Sam’s voice was gentle. His hands shaking as he picked the baby off the floor.

The baby cooed and snuggled into his hands. Sam brought the baby closer to his chest, trying to remember how to hold him properly.

Father. Father. Father.

What if Jack didn’t actually grow up quick? And what if Sam finally stood up for himself and told Dean that he was raising the baby? And what if when castiel returns he doesn’t fall for Dean?

Chapter 1: Don’t You Cry No More

Chapter Text

The screams grew louder and louder as the hunter walked closer to the nursery. Sam had never really been around babies. But he knew what an infant sounded like.

“Jack?” Sam called out, despite the fact that babies couldn’t talk back.

Father. Father. Father.

Sam teared up as he snuggled the child. Without having to look too hard he found an extra blanket to wrap Jack up with. The room was freezing.

“I got you. Don’t worry sweet boy, Sam is here.” He rocked him a little, wondering if Kelly would’ve been upset by his presence.
But she was dead and all this poor baby had left was the Winchesters.

Jack seemed to like Sam, his screams had ceased completely and his eyes were large as he looked up to Sam. Pure innocence and love displayed on his tiny face.

Sam had never been a father, never been around children or anything resembling a normal family. But his heart ached looking at this child.

Heavy footsteps distracted Sam from his thoughts. His brother’s boots were easily recognizable after years of hunting together. And from the weight his brother was putting in each step, he was angry.

“Sammy!” Dean called out. Something about his voice made Sam freeze. His brother was upset, more than a normal amount.

“In the nursery.” Sam replied, rocking the baby to avoid upsetting Jack. He grimaced at how loud he had to be.

Dean Winchester walked in the room looking like all that was good had died. Devastation was clear on his face, barely dried tears were wiped from his cheeks.

Then his eyes landed on the miracle in Sam’s arms. Green eyes hardened into stone and for the first time Sam saw no empathy for a child that needed it.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Dean asked and gestured to Jack.

“Holding the baby, obviously.” Without thinking he held the baby closer to his heart, moving the blanket to cover him more. “Kelly is dead. He needed someone to hold him.”

Sam’s eyes teared up thinking about Jack’s mom. She was a strong woman, so strong. And brave. She deserved to be the one to hold her baby.

“Because that thing killed her. It’s a monster Sam, put it in the crib” his brother’s voice was ice. “You can’t keep it.”

Sam gave Dean a wounded look. He didn’t expect him to be overjoyed by the baby. With their lives being what it was. With who the sire of the baby was.

But he was an orphan. A tiny innocent baby who didn’t deserve the already rotten hand he was dealt. He wasn’t a killer. And he wasn’t a monster.

He straightened his posture and shook his head. Jack stayed clutched to Sam’s chest. He seemed to understand something bad was happening because he started to whine.

Sam did his best to sooth the infant without looking away from his brother.

“He’s innocent. And I will be taking care of him.” Sam didn’t flinch at the glare Dean shot at him. And he didn’t flinch when Dean’s hand went to his gun. Like he was gonna shoot one of them.

“Sammy, he killed his mother. He’s the reason our mom is gone and Cas is dead. He’s not leaving here.”

Agony spiraled through him at the reminder. They had lost so many people in only an hour. Crowley was dead too.

Their mother was trapped in some other universe with the actual devil. The same devil who murdered cas and basically murdered Kelly.

“That was all on Lucifer. Not Jack. You could ask any one of them and they would tell you that.” He couldn’t stop his voice from breaking.

“We can’t because they’re all dead. Damn it Sammy. I know you have a soft spot for freaks but this one isn’t worth it. He’s Lucifer’s kid.”

I’m the son of Kelly and Castiel. And now Sam!

Jack’s angelic voice appeared. The way Dean’s eyes grew in surprise made it clear he heard Jack’s voice too.

“He’s not his father, Dean. Just like we aren’t John. And I’m not yellow eyes even though I have his blood too.” Sam walked closer to his brother. “He’s staying with me. I’m raising him. If you don’t like it then fine. But I’m not letting you kill him or abandon him.”

Dean’s hand dropped away from his weapon. His face no longer held fury but went blank.

“I won’t help you with it. Not even once. If you want to play house, then play house. But it won’t be my responsibility and I won’t love that thing.”

It was the closest thing he would get to his brother’s blessing. So Sam turned around to find everything he needed.

Bottles, formula, diapers. All the clothes Kelly had bought, all the photo albums she made. Every blanket or toy.

Sam collected it all while holding Jack close to him. He did it all without looking at his brother. He did it all as he cried over everything the three of them had lost.

Dean didn’t say anything as he build the funeral pyre for Castiel’s body. He didn’t ask Sam’s help either, at least.

“We’ll get you a new crib once we get home.” Sam whispered to Jack as he put the bassinet in the front of the impala. The backseat currently held the car seat for Jack and also Sam’s jacket.

He planned to ride with Jack the entire ride home. He didn’t want him to feel alone and he also didn’t want to risk being so far away from him.

Home. The voice replied. I wanna go home.

“Soon.” Sam promised.

They just had a few funerals to attend to first. It was heartbreaking how Jack’s first day on this earth was filled with so much grief.

Sam prayed to God that Jack wouldn’t grow up with as much grief as he and Dean did. That he would have as normal of a life a half angel child could.

God, hopefully, would listen and take care of his grand child. Sam hoped that at least one family member wouldn’t put their hatred of his sire onto him.

If anyone had the right to hate anything and anyone associated with Lucifer it was Sam. Lucifer had killed his girlfriend, had taken away his autonomy in every way imaginable. He tortured him. He let him burn.

Sam Winchester hates the devil with such a passion it could set the earth ablaze if he let it. And if Dean knew even a fraction of what Sam actually went through, then he would wonder how Sam even woke up in the mornings.

But Sam didn’t blame this child on it. Over the last few months maybe all he could think about was the baby was half Lucifer’s.

The thing was that Jack was half Kelly’s. And to Sam, that meant more than anything else. So he didn’t hold Lucifer’s sins onto Jack. He didn’t blame anything on him.

He would love Jack, would raise him. And he would take down anyone who tried to hurt him. Even if it meant cutting ties.
