Summary:

This poem is about the anticipation of abandonment and how this perspective holds those around her to the point of idolatry.

Work Text:

You compare me to my father,
An attribute I am likened to,
But without anyone knowing,
I'll admit, I look the most like you
And even just the little things:
Every talk, every stumble,
Every cry, every promise,
Every laugh, every sameness
Of our troubles; there's a sense
That looking at me is my consequence
Of your actions, if we went over and over
Like a reaction, it's a named cause with resilience
To screw me over like you do.

You remind me of a father,
Those frames I want to exist through,
Could you take this all away,
Because I'll admit I look for the most from you:
And I even want more, and I even crave,
and I even ask if it's a dream.
Waking up, it's a nightmare,
That, because of this pain,
Something you're not accustomed to,
Could you take it away as your reaction:
To screw me over like I've wanted you to do.
