Chapter Text
Orpheus looks back. Not because he needs to feel her presence or because he doesn't trust her, but just because they're so used to exchanging smiles and glances as they banter. He's humming a song, remembers it's one of her favorites, and looks back to see if she's smiling - and indeed she is, until she isn't. His only consolation is that their last memory together was them exchanging smiles over a beautiful piece of music.
He keeps humming as he walks, and if you listen it's always the same song. When he returns to the surface it's the only one he plays. He adds a new section to it, without any lyrics, that's a sadder variation on the original bridge. If you ask him why that's the only section without lyrics, he says that "some emotions are beyond words". The real reason is that even for a great musician, it's hard to sing well while crying.
Eurydice forgets her name in time, and even Orpheus'. The only thing that sets her apart from the rest of Hades' drones is a simple melody she whistles while she works. Nobody can say where it comes from, least of all her, but the last time someone asked her to stop whistling she stabbed them with a pickaxe.
