“I’m sorry,” Abe murmured, breaking the quiet atmosphere suddenly. A wisp of fog, flown away into the breeze to meet its fate. Henry turned to him.
An inquisitive look glinted in his dark eyes. Faint, tiny droplets of rain nestled on his hair, glistening in the form of delicate silver accents that seemed to just shine with the soft glow of the streetlights. A single lock of damp, dark hair clung to his temple, giving him an almost slightly tousled appearance. “What about?”
Abe sighed and took a moment’s pause before replying, simply, “It's wet."
“It’s not your fault that it rained, Abraham.” Henry chuckled softly. There was levity glittering in his eyes, gentle and affectionate. Abe’s heart warmed with fondness for the older vampire beside him, despite the glumness cast upon his own expression.
“I wanted you to have a good time... I wanted this— I wanted everything to be perfect,” Abe persisted. A little droplet of rain dropped down from somewhere above and landed on his nose, almost as if to emphasize his uncertainty. He frowned.
Henry's gaze roamed his face for a moment, a soft little smile playing across his mouth as Abe wiped the raindrop away with the back of his hand. Then he replied, “Oh, Abraham. But it is.”
Abe turned to him, a questioning look blooming across his face. “How could it be?” he pressed, glancing over their drab surroundings: the soft whispering of the rain, fading sunshine gold hidden behind eternal gray clouds…
The distinctive absence of presence.
Thunder rumbled in the sky every now and then, though the sound remained distant and muffled near the horizon.
Henry hummed, glancing around as well. Then he carefully wiped off the little pool of water on the bench and seated himself beside Abe, flicking the water off his hand before brushing it off lightly on the knee of his trousers.
Henry slowly leaned forward into Abe’s space, close enough that the tips of their noses remained a mere inch from touching. Henry held the other vampire’s gaze for a heartbeat or two before he quietly spoke again.
“Because you’re here.”
