Work Text:
Namgyu woke up to the sounds of shuffling. The room was still dark, but the faint glow of blue and red from the ‘X’ and ‘O’ projected onto the floor was still enough for him to make out forms. He wished he had brought his glasses with him when he got kidnapped. Trying to see in the dark without them was a bitch.
Fragments of memories from before he fell asleep slowly filtered back into his mind as Namgyu tried to figure out why he had woken up. He had… been on a comedown from one of the pills. Yes that's right, right before the lights were shut off for the night he had been shivering under his blanket, jaw clenched with tension and a cold sweat forming in every crevice of his body it could find. The dull pain that radiated through all of his body was almost too much to bear, and he knew he needed another pill if he wanted any chance of being able to sleep rather than writhe in agony all night.
He wasn't addicted. He wasn't.
I could quit any time, Namgyu huffed as he forced his body up and over the edge of his own bunk to land onto the one below him. The one belonging to Thanos, of course.
Thanos seemed to have been just about ready to sleep, resting on his side underneath his blanket, but with the sudden dip of weight on his mattress his eyes snapped open. He was clearly still wary of any danger after the little scuffle they had gotten into with some of those team X fuckers in the bathroom earlier. Thanos’ body only relaxed once he recognized Namgyu on his bed, though his eyes still formed a half-hearted glare.
“Whatchu want, boy.” It was hardly a question, more like a demand for an answer.
Nangyu's eyes flickered down to the cross necklace hidden beneath Thanos’ sweatshirt; the cure to all his problems. Namgyu didn't even have to say anything and Thanos could already tell from that one micro expression what Namgyu was there for.
Just as Namgyu opened his mouth to say something, maybe beg and plead for just one more, the overhead lights turned off, forcing the room into darkness and quietness.
Thanos just sighed, he seemed to be painfully sober as well considering the absence of his violently energetic energy he usually gained during a high. Namgyu suddenly felt his arm being gripped and he was yanked closer. Not just closer, he practically sprawled out onto his side right beside Thanos, and Thanos threw part of his blanket over the top of them, creating their own little world within the midst of the games.
Damn, the last time they had been so close was during a drug-infused make out session in the bathroom, which fizzled out as the drugs made them both sleepy, and they both had yet to acknowledge since. Namgyu could feel his hands shaking again and he was unsure if it was from withdrawals or the close proximity.
Thanos released a massive yawn right into Namgyu's face which, gross, but he did pull the locket out from his sweatshirt immediately after so Namgyu could excuse it. Thanos’ mouth curled up into a smirk as he dangled it in front of Namgyu's eyes, back and forth like he was trying to hypnotize him. And fuck did it work because Namgyu's eyes were glued to the little pill container like it would give him all the answers to life; maybe if he ended up with a pill cut strong enough it actually would.
“Little junkie, what would you do without me,” Thanos sing-songed and popped open the locket to shake out a red pill into his hand. “You can only have half though, we're running low.”
Namgyu hated to admit the “we” Thanos used warmed his heart a little. Despite everything they had been through, it was still most reassuring to hear Thanos voice out loud that they really were a team, a duo. He knew he was down bad for this man because he would be willing to do just about anything for him. He grimaced at the sappy thought.
“What, you don't want it?” Thanos asked, quirking an eyebrow at Namgyu's sudden shift in expression. This close, even in the dark they could both see every minute shift in facial expression on the other.
“No, no, I do!” Namgyu snapped out of his thoughts and whisper-shouted back.
He watched in near despair as Thanos brought the pill up to his own mouth, thinking he had lost his chance at a blissful sleep aided by some good hard drugs. Yet contrary to Namgyu's expections, Thanos only bit off half the pill and snickered at Namgyu's wide pleading eyes as he held the other half of the pill over.
Without even thinking, Namgyu moved his face forward to lick up the pill straight from Thanos’ fingers. They both froze in shock as the half-tablet disappeared into Namgyu's mouth.
“What the fuck, why are you looking at me like I did it?” Thanos looked at Namgyu incredulously. Namgyu's own eyes were wide open in shock because why did he do that? Thanos’ fingertips listened with the tiniest amount of saliva from Namgyu's tongue.
Namgyu quickly flipped over so he was facing away from Thanos, simply mumbling out a “That didn't happen. I'm going to sleep now.”
“Go back to your own bed,” Thanos grumbled, but he hadn't forced Namgyu to move, so he fell asleep there after the drug began to kick in, finally allowing him to relax.
And that was the entire sequence of events leading up to him being awoken in the middle of the night. The bed was pleasantly warm underneath the blanket with the combined body heat of both Namgyu and Thanos, but Namgyu could feel the mattress shifting behind him, and cold air blew in under the blanket as it was lifted up.
Namgyu rolled over to see Thanos getting up from the bed.
“What ar'you doin’? You gotta piss or something?” Namgyu yawned and rubbed his eyes with his sleeves; clearly it hadn't been long since he had fallen asleep because the drugs were still running strong through his system, making him feel extra lethargic as he woke up.
Thanos didn't answer, which Namgyu immediately found strange. He just silently stood up and… made a beeline for the stairs?
Namgyu quickly sat up, letting the blanket pool at his waist as he watched in confusion as Thanos stumbled persistently forward. “Wait, dude, where are you going?”
Again, it was as if Thanos hadn't even heard him. And Namgyu was quickly losing sight of him behind the rows of metal bed frames.
Namgyu rushed to stand up and called out to Thanos. “Wait! Come back!”
Namgyu had to practically sprint to catch up with Thanos’ long strides. He caught up to him just as Thanos was about to reach the open area of the room, and he was able to switch to a fast walk.
“Why the hell aren't you answering me?” Namgyu huffed out, a little winded from the late night jog.
Thanos, unsurprisingly, still didn't answer. However, now that the two of them had reached the more well-lit area of the room Namgyu could make out the other man's facial features a little better. His eyes were still closed.
“Are you… are you sleepwalking?!” Namgyu sputtered; he quickly covered his mouth when he realized just how loud he had spoken in his incredulity. And really, why was he even asking out loud? Thanos clearly wasn't going to answer because he was sleepwalking. Namgyu's eyes darted around the room to see if he had woken anyone up, but it seemed he was safe.
I… should try to get him back to bed. Namgyu decided. It was dangerous for Thanos to be walking around the room so defenselessly with the amount of enemies the two of them had made in the brawl earlier, and Thanos was clearly headed to the other side of the room where the entirety of the X team was sleeping.
Namgyu tried pulling on Thanos’ sleeve to guide him, but he was clearly on a mission because that didn't work to stop his movement forward. Namgyu grabbed onto Thanos' shoulders and tried to shake him awake but that didn't work either. He wondered if it was an effect of the drugs.
It looked like all Namgyu could really do was walk with Thanos until he finally settled back down. Namgyu unzipped his sweatshirt and pulled out the fork he had kept from their meal earlier just in case. He had to be ready in case someone saw them and decided to attack. Lights out was prime time for fights, after all.
Thanos continued walking, his pace had finally slowed to more of a stroll so Namgyu could slink alongside him. He tried his best to fight past his sluggishness so he could stay vigilant while they sauntered along. The lingering effects of the drugs were working against him for once.
Thanos suddenly stopped. Namgyu nearly tripped and fell into him at the abrupt halt. He managed to stabilize himself and rounded Thanos’ side to see if the other had woken up yet. Nope. Eyes were still closed.
Why did he stop? Is he dreaming about something? I wonder what he's seeing if he is. Namgyu gazed up at Thanos. If he squinted just right he could see that Thanos’ eyes were shifting and his eyelids were fluttering. Ah, he must be dreaming.
Just as suddenly as he had halted, Thanos turned on his heel and started heading back in the direction they had come from.
“That's so fuckin’ weird… Does his body just remember where his bed is?” Namgyu quietly wondered aloud.
He jogged to keep up, and as they passed by one of the many beds Namgyu saw a figure. Sitting up. Looking at them.
Whoever it was, their eyes were glowing like beady little ghost orbs in the night. Actually seeing another person awake was so unexpected for Namgyu that he almost jumped, but he quickly steeled his nerves.
“You better stay right there, or I'll stab this fucking thing straight through your eye.” Namgyu hissed and brandished his fork at the other player.
The threat must have been enough, either that or the stranger had no intentions of attacking in the first place, because they didn't move. Namgyu and Thanos were able to pass by peacefully.
Namgyu let out a sigh of relief as they arrived back at Thanos’ bunk and Thanos collapsed onto the mattress like a puppet whose strings had been cut.
Namgyu crawled back into bed alongside him. He wanted nothing more than to succumb to the sweet relief of unconsciousness before they were forced to play more games in the morning. He made sure to grab one of Thanos’ arms and hold it tight to his chest as they both settled back into bed. He wasn't about to let Thanos run off for a second time that night.
Just as Namgyu was about to slip off back into his own dreams—dreams no doubt centered around Thanos—he had one final thought.
I should remember to ask Thanos what he was dreaming about in the morning.
