Work Text:
"Eh- I-I'll be right there, Ranpo!! Ahh, oh dear..."
Sometime late into the night, Poe was quickly picking up the scattered pages and pieces of paper he had dropped. He and Ranpo just sped out of a building where they had to investigate a case. Their schedule was already packed, so by the time they were done with their work, it was already late and they were quite tired. Luckily, Kunikida had offered to drive them both home, so they were able to at least have a break then. Once Poe finally gathered all of his papers-holding them tighter this time- he was able to get into the car.
Due to a few things that were in the passenger seat- and concerningly organized, Poe and Ranpo had to sit in the back, not that they were complaining, however. As he got in, Poe held one hand over Karl- who was perched on his shoulders like always- so he wouldn't get hit on the top of the door. It was only a few moments after Poe sat down that he felt something else on his shoulder; Ranpo's head.
"Huh?? Ranpo? Are you ok??"
Poe gently shook Ranpo, trying to alert him. The shaking didn't alert Ranpo, but instead caused him to fall over...
Right into Poe's lap.
'He's dead!!!' Poe's first thought caused him to panic. "KUNIKIDA, SIR!!! I THINK RANPO'S DEAD!!!?"
Kunikida whipped his head around instantly, prepared to look the allegedly 'dead' detective over and call for help. However, as soon as he saw Ranpo, he looked back at Poe with an incredulous look.
"Poe, he's asleep."
Poe looked down at Ranpo again and realized Kunikida was right. Karl leaned down and started sniffing Ranpo. Poe still had a few concerns.
"What if we crash and he gets hurt because of his position? It can't be comfortable for him to sleep like this anyway!! He could wake up with all sorts of aches!! What if he's not up by the time-"
Kunikida interrupted Poe's loud and frantic rambling.
"IF YOU'RE THAT WORRIED ABOUT HIM, WHY DON'T YOU SHUT UP AND LET HIM SLEEP?!"
"...Right..." Poe muttered. Even over the noise Kunikida and Poe made, Ranpo continued to peacefully sleep. Karl climbed fully off of Poe's shoulder and into his lap, by Ranpo. Looking at them, Poe noticed Ranpo's hat was askew, practically falling off of his head. He picked the hat up and put it to the side.
'He really does look happy.."
Poe thought as he stared down at Ranpo. He hesitantly set his hands down and started to caress him, running his hands through Ranpo's hair and gently petting his shoulder. As he continued to watch Ranpo, he felt a sudden gratitude toward him. Ranpo made him feel welcomed and wanted even though he was part of a rival organization. Poe smiled. Perhaps the next day, when Ranpo would read Poe's new novel, he could surprise him with a snack. Although, he would probably just deduct what was in Poe's pocket- it wouldn't be the first time he's done that. Until then, Poe would ensure that he was comfortable and well rested. He would make this the best sleep his dear Ranpo ever had.
