Why Am I Me?

Summary:

Garrett (Yeah, I figured) hates himself, so he goes to his best friend, Gabby. There, he figures out who he really wants to be.

Notes:

This is an AU where Gabby and Grett actually get along. They know each other before the show, and Grett was male (transgender during/before the show). And it’s sad because that’s why her parent’s favor her brother, because she’s trans :(

I think I might put the example of the “amusement park” that I saw from the one video explaining gender identities.

WARNING! THIS IS NOT A SHIP FIC, THIS IS STRICTLY PLATONIC!

Work Text:

Garrett sat at his bed, staring at his reflection in the mirror. It didn’t make sense, he knew who he was, he had what he wanted, so why did he feel so out of place?

It doesn’t line up!

He decided to call his best friend Gabby over. He picked his phone up and dial her number.

Ring, ring!

“Hello? Gabby speaking,” he heard.

“Hey, it’s me, Garrett. Mind coming over? I have no idea what I’m feeling and need a little bit of help,” Garrett explained.

“Ah! No worries! I’ll be right over!” She said before hanging up.

Garrett sat on the bed, putting his head in his hands. What if Gabby didn’t have an answer? What if his situation didn’t make sense to her? What if he was left with the feeling of being “wrong”?

Knock knock knock!!

“Hey! It’s me, Gabby! Otwarty!” he heard Gabby yell through the other side of the door.

He felt so wrong!

Garrett stood up and opened the door. There stood an enthusiastic Gabby.

“Hey! What’s up?” She asked.

“We need to talk,” Garrett said in a serious tone.

Gabby’s smile faltered, “About what?”

Garrett felt tear’s prick his eyes, “I’m… I’m so confused, Gabs.”

“About what?” Gabby entered the room and closing the door.

Garrett sighed and hugged Gabby, “I-I don’t know who I am anymore… I feel… wrong.”

“You aren’t! Everyone has rights, and you do too,” Gabby said.

“No! My body, I’m too overweight, I don’t even feel in the correct body,” he sobbed into her shoulder, “I’m so confused, I don’t know.”

In the amusement park of genders, Garrett felt out of place in the male section.

“Nothing’s wrong with you, nic!” Gabby said, her voice stern but caring, “You’re perfect, and if you need help feeling better, then I can help.”

Garrett sobbed quietly into Gabby’s shoulder, letting all his emotions out, “I-I don’t feel comfortable anymore! I could do it for the first twenty years, but not anymore… not anymore.”

“Hey, have you ever considered being another gender?” Gabby asked.

“What… what are you saying..?” He wondered. Being another gender had never crossed his mind before…

“Y’know! Transgender, demigender, etcetera etcetera,” Gabby explained.

It’s like Gabby gave him tickets to other sections. He was free to choose which gender section he wanted to be in.

Memories flashed his mind. Memories of when he was five, going shopping with his mother, and wishing he could buy dresses. Memories of envying the makeup women wore. Memories of staring himself in the mirror, thinking that something was wrong about his appearance, that he got put in the wrong body. It scared him before, and it scares her now.

“Garrett? Garrett? Grett?” Gabby accidentally messed up, and that’s when it hit her.

She didn’t want to be known as Garrett. She wanted to be known as Grett.

The realization made Grett cry harder, so she clung onto Gabby.

“G-Gabby… I-I don’t think I want to be m-male… I want to be female,” Grett stuttered.

Gabby smiled and hugged Grett tight.

She finally knows who she wants to be. She wants to be Gretchen Clark.
