Work Header

well, come on and let me know (should I stay, or should I go?)

Summary:

After the stream, Kakashi somehow found the courage to text Genma and compliment him, too. Where did he get that courage? No fucking idea. But it'd been done, and Kakashi is now spiralling. All while Obito and Rin tried to reassure him that Genma was actually interested in him.

the aftermath of the stream

Notes:

Heyyyyy.

So, since I've been watching even more streams after I posted the first chapter, I decided to write more for this (very self-indulgent) au. It has a lot of dialogue, so I apologise for that, but I really wanted to write some silly interactions between Kakashi, Rin, and Obito. They're all very important to me.

Again, it's basically just a word vomit and nothing else, but I had a lot of fun writing it. So, enjoy some anxious Kakashi, Obito clowning on Kakashi, and Rin trying to be supportive.

Hope you enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kakashi wanted to scream. Very loudly. At the top of his fucking lungs.

Did he actually message Genma? According to his Discord, yeah, he did. Kakashi really didn’t know where he got the courage – quite frankly, he rarely texted first, it’d always made him feel rather anxious, but…it happened.

Fuck.

Genma still hadn’t replied, and Kakashi was too scared to even wait for the response, so instead, he closed all the tabs and turned off his computer. He even put his phone on DND, even though he was pretty sure he had all his notification silenced anyway. Just in case.

When Kakashi walked into the kitchen, he found Obito and Rin dancing to ABBA, and he grimaced. “Sure, rub in the fact that I’m single. Rub it in,” he mumbled, shaking his head.

“Oh, don’t be like that,” said Rin with a smile on her lips, not looking away from Obito at all. She had her arms wrapped around his neck, while Obito had both of his hands on her hips. “We’ve seen you complaining about being our third-wheel.”

“So, we’ve decided to be even more insufferable,” added Obito, shooting Kakashi a grin.

“You were watching, huh?” said Kakashi as he sat behind the dining table.

“I take my role as your mod very seriously, thank you very much,” replied Obito, raising his chin proudly. Then, he raised one eyebrow at Kakashi, scanning him up and down. “So you appreciate Genma’s compliment, huh?”

Kakashi groaned, burying his face in his hands. “Let me live.”

“C’mon,” said Rin, gently swatting Obito’s shoulder, “I think it was adorable.”

“I honestly thought that all the advices we’ve given you on talking to people would help, but alas,” sighed Obito, and this time, Rin giggled, but she tried to hide it behind her hand.

Kakashi glared at both of them. “I don’t like you very much.”

“See? He can’t even say he hates us!” cackled Obito. “He loves us, your honour!”

Kakashi was quiet for a moment, his eyes darting around the kitchen. After a moment, he mumbled, “I texted him.”

“Huh?” mumbled Rin as she let go of Obito.

“I don’t think I heard you right,” said Obito. “You gotta speak up. There’s no way in hell I heard you right.”

“I texted him,” said Kakashi, this time his voice was loud and clear as he looked at Obito and Rin. “After stream. I, uh, I texted him that he also sounds hot.”

For a moment, they were all quiet. Kakashi was looking between Obito and Rin, waiting for any response. The first one to break the silence was Obito, laughing so hard he had to lean against his knees as he gasped for air.

“I can’t believe this!” screamed Obito, while Rin only chuckled in response. “He actually made the first step! Chat, clip that!”

“You’re not even streaming right now, you dumb fuck,” huffed Kakashi.

“I’m very proud of you,” said Rin, leaving Obito to laugh hysterically as she walked up to Kakashi. “I mean, Genma seemed to be pretty interested.”

Kakashi blinked slowly, a dumbfounded expression settling on his face. “No, he didn’t,” he said slowly. “He only said I sounded hot. I just…returned the compliment.”

Rin sighed, almost as if she was in pain. “Honey, no. Trust me,” she said, squatting down next to the chair, where Kakashi was sitting. “Obito decided to investigate a little and watched Genma’s stream for a bit.”

Kakashi looked at Obito, frowning. “Taking your role as a mod very seriously, huh?”

Obito finally stopped laughing and matched Kakashi’s frown. “I was doing it for you, dude. And Rin was in the chat, anyway,” he added, pouting.

Rin snapped her fingers, effectively getting Kakashi’s attention. “No, I can assure you that Genma seems, well…” she trailed off.

“My man was bricked,” blurted out Obito, and Kakashi choked on air. Of course, he knew that Obito had always lacked any filter, but it just caught him off guard, alright? He couldn’t help it.

“What do you even mean by that?” mumbled Kakashi, when he finally got his coughing fit under control.

“Anytime, you’d swear, or like grunt, I guess, he’d just take this very deep breath, and he looked like he wanted to say so many things, but he’d bite his tongue,” replied Obito. “And, hey, I might be straight, but some people would say that you’re hot.”

“I’m saying it, you are hot,” Rin chimed in, looking directly at Kakashi.

Obito gasped, putting one hand on his chest. “Are you trying to replace me? By my best friend of all people?”

Rin looked back at Obito, heaving a sigh. “Obito, baby, we’re getting married next spring. And Kakashi is gay,” she deadpanned. “And I don’t think anyone is hotter than you.”

This seemed to satisfy Obito, because he pulled Rin up and wrapped his arms around her. “Hehe, did you hear that? I’m the hottest.”

“I’m going to throw up,” mumbled Kakashi.

“Hold on,” said Rin, “what did Genma even reply?” she asked, looking at Kakashi intently.

Kakashi grimaced, looking away. “I turned my computer off and put my phone on DND. I…I really don’t want to see what he replied,” he admitted quietly.

Now, was it a stupid fear to have? Probably, but Kakashi was already aware of that. Really, Genma was the one that started the whole thing, but despite that, he was too anxious to even look at the small icon of Discord on his phone without feeling sick.

On top of everything, he couldn’t imagine that someone like Genma could be even remotely interested in him (he still didn’t understand the whole taking a deep breath and biting his tongue thing that Obito mentioned). It just didn’t seem exactly like a possibility.

“Give me your phone,” said Obito, his hand already outstretched, when Kakashi turned his head. “I’m going to look if he replied.”

“What? No,” mumbled Kakashi. “I don’t even want to know if he replied, honestly.”

“Kakashi,” said Obito, “give me your fucking phone.”

With a sigh, he handed his phone over to Obito, gnawing on his lower lip. He watched intently as Obito unblocked his phone (his password were Rin’s and Obito’s birthday), and he started going through his messages. Rin was peeking over his shoulder the entire time, standing on her tiptoes.

After a moment, Obito huffed out a soft chuckle. “He said–”

“I don’t wanna hear it!”

“He said,” continued Obito, completely ignoring Kakashi’s pleas, “and I quote ‘thank you. Again, it was nice to play with it you. We’re playing again tomorrow, if you want to join us’ , and he even added a smiley face.”

“And not the emoji one, but the old-school one,” added Rin. “I feel like that’s very important.”

“Are you really analysing his short message?” mumbled Kakashi, shaking his head in disbelief. “You’re unbelievable. Both of you,” he added.

“Oh, he’s typing again!” exclaimed Rin, tugging on Obito’s arm. “Oh my god,” she said after a moment.

“He says you’re really fucking cool,” said Obito, letting out a snort. “It’s obvious he doesn’t know you, then.”

“Give me that,” huffed Kakashi, snatching the phone from Obito’s hand to look at the messages himself. He couldn’t help, but smile as he read what Genma sent him.

senbon_enjoyer: you’re really fucking cool btw

senbon_enjoyer: i’ve been watching your yt and streams for a while now

senbon_enjoyer: but i’m sorry if i made you uncomfortable today

“He’s smiling,” chuckled Rin, hiding her smile behind her hand.

“Oh, they grow up so fast,” said Obito, wiping an imaginary tear.

“Awful, both of you,” huffed Kakashi as he turned around to walk back to his room.

“I want to be the best man on your wedding!” Obito called after Kakashi.

“And I want to be the maid of honour!” added Rin.

Kakashi closed the door to his room with a heavy sigh. He lay down on his bed, his fingers hovering above the keyboard on his phone as he tried to decide on what to actually reply. It wasn’t everyday he actually talked to people outside Obito and Rin – those two were already used to his dry replies and reaction pictures (he had a whole folder with more than a thousand pictures that he’d use instead of actually typing out a proper reply).

kakashi_hatake: No, no. I wasn’t uncomfortable, I just never know how to reply to a compliment

kakashi_hatake: I’d love to play again with you

kakashi_hatake: Like, all of you

kakashi_hatake: But I’d be happy if you were there

Kakashi set his phone aside, covering his face with a pillow. What was he even doing?

Sure, he had been watching Genma’s streams every now and then, but he’d never thought it was growing into some kind of parasocial crush. But…was it parasocial? They were talking, weren’t they? Kakashi wasn’t just a random fan behind the screen – they were aware of each other now, they even complimented each other.

Did Kakashi have a crush? That was a good fucking question, because basic feelings were complicated enough, let alone anything that had to do with romantic attraction. Well, lovely.

Finally, Kakashi found the courage to look at his phone to see what Genma replied. For a moment, he expected Genma to laugh at him, but instead he smiled brightly at his screen.

senbon_enjoyer: oh, trust me, i’ll be there

senbon_enjoyer: just for you

kakashi_hatake: deal
