Work Text:

Jon could have lived many better lives if he had done a single thing differently.

He thinks about that a lot when he’s miserable. Which is most of the time now that he’s trapped in a cabin in the middle of the apocalypse. Before, when he was alone in the office, no Basira hassling him, no Daisy staring at him with dead eyes, no Melanie yelling at him, he would get thinking. His favourite alternative self to investigate is if Sasha was given the archivist job instead of him.

Sasha was intelligent, level-headed, kick-ass. She always said she wasn’t brave, but at least she tried to be. Probably, she would have figured out that something else was going on sooner than he ever did. Maybe Gertrude did tell her everything and she chose not to share it with Jon.

Working in Archive storage would have given her a different skill set to him. He had his research background, which helped in some ways and hindered him in others. She would have had a more practical approach perhaps, wouldn’t have recoiled at the sight of the teeth apple. Well, she dealt with Michael like a champ. Jon just got stabbed.

Sasha wouldn’t have lost Tim. Not in a million years. She would have gotten through to him, helped him figure out what happened to his brother without getting him blown up. Daisy might not have ended up in that coffin, and Melanie might still have her eyes.

What would the girls think of Sasha? More than they do of Jon, that’s for sure. The four of them would have made a good little team. Sasha probably would have gotten Daisy out of the coffin faster. Melanie would still trust her.

Martin… would have found someone else. He would be fine without Jon.

“Bullshit.” Martin says when Jon voices this to him while they’re in the Scottish cabin. “Okay, in this scenario, do you get eaten by the NotThem?”

“Uh, I guess not?” Jon shrugs. He doesn’t like the idea that Sasha got eaten. “I didn’t think that far ahead.”

“Then of course I still like you in that universe.” Martin rolls his eyes affectionately.

“Really?” Jon asks quietly.

“Duh. I didn’t like you because you were my boss.” Martin sits down on the couch beside him. “I liked you because you were, well, you .”

“Whoever that is.” Jon mumbles.

“Oh, stop it.” Martin chides, wrapping his arm around Jon’s shoulders. “I love you, okay? No matter what universe or timeline we’re in.”

Jon smiles. “I love you too.”
