4:00 AM.
That's what the clock displayed. 4:00 AM. And yet he couldn't bring himself to accept that as true. He groaned, putting his pillow over his face to stifle the noise. Why couldn't he fall asleep? He was extremely tired and had school tomorrow and still he couldn't sleep. He had around two hours until he had to get up to get ready for school and he had a feeling he wouldn't be getting any sleep at all in that time.
He was pulled out of his thoughts by a knock on his door. He turned to see it open, revealing a tall figure with very messy hair. Sam. It was too dark to make out his expression, but he was holding Mr Snugglemuffins. His ears were low, so he must've been distressed.
"Grian..?" He said, his voice barely above a whisper. Grian sat up a bit in his bed. "I had a nightmare... Can I sleep in your bed?"
"Wh-? No!" Grian fully sat up as the rabbit hybrid made his way further into the room.
"But Grian!" He said loudly before putting a hand over his mouth. He continued in a much more hushed tone. "Taurtis always lets me sleep with him!"
"Then why don't you go sleep with Taurtis?" Grian was holding back the urge to yell at him.
Sam stuttered a bit at the question, looking down. "I dunno... I guess I just wanted to be with you because you're so much less touchy than Taurtis so I don't get to be close to you that much..."
Grian sighed, softening at the confession. He still wasn't letting Sam sleep with him tho.
Sam got even closer to the bed and Grian pulled the sheets up defensively.
"Nuh uh, you're on your own, bud."
"But-!" Sam was about to protest when Grian cut him off.
"We have two hours until we have to get up, it'd be pretty stupid, don't you think?"
"Two hours is enough for me to get a good nap."
Grian sighed annoyedly.
"You'd spend the two hours arguing with me if I didn't let you, wouldn't you?"
Sam simply nodded as if it was the most obvious thing ever said, and Grian sighed again, pulling the sheets down. Sam excitedly got into the bed and immediately tried to grab onto Grian.
"What are you doing?!" Grian whisper-shouted.
"Getting comfortable." Sam leaned in and rested his head against Grian's chest, much to the avian's annoyance. He didn't pull him away despite that.
After a few seconds, Sam shifted and looked at Grian with a frown.
"Do you have your binder on?" His tone was between a question and an accusation. Grian stiffened and sat up, looking away. Sam sat up as well, looking annoyed.
"You know you're not supposed to wear it to bed."
"I know, I'm sorry."
"Don't say sorry to me, say sorry to yourself!"
Grian sighed and got off the bed, walking into the bathroom to take his binder off. When walked back into the room, Sam was sitting on the bed with his arms crossed.
"You're not wearing it to school, by the way."
"What?!" Grian suddenly felt outraged.
"You've worn it for the max amount of time already."
Grian wanted to argue but he knew Sam was right. Sighing, he got back into bed, but he didn't feel like laying down again, simply sitting on the mattress. Sam, who had already laid down, shifted a bit to rest his head on Grian's lap, making the avian stiffen, and then relax again just as quickly, running his hands through the other's hair.
They stayed like that for a bit before Sam broke the silence.
"Any girls at school catch your eye?" He asked, looking at Grian's face from where he was positioned. "Or guys, I dunno what you're into."
Grian's face heated up but he didn't say anything, continuing to play with his friend's hair while avoiding looking at his face.
Sam noticed this and smirked.
"Ohhhh, you totally like someone. Who is it?" He asked, grinning ear to ear.
The avian froze, looking to the side. Sam rolled his eyes playfully.
"C'mon, I'm not gonna judge you. Maybe I could even help you get with them." He said, his tone a bit softer, but still teasing.
After a minute, the rabbit sighed, realising this was going nowhere.
"Fine, be like that, but don't come crying to me when your crush starts dating someone else and you're still single." He said, crossing his arms.
Grian sighed, glad that Sam had finally given up on the topic, annoyed at him for pushing the subject when he clearly didn't want to talk about it, and endeared by his friend's mannerisms. Despite the many emotions swirling in his head, he moved his hands back to the rabbit hybrid's hair, continuing to play with it in silence for the rest of the time they had left.
Once his alarm went off, signifying it was 6 AM and they had to start getting ready for school, the two friends both sighed in annoyance at having to leave this perfect little moment. Still, the both of them were in a better mood than usual at school. If anyone asked, it didn't have anything to do with each other.
