Summary
Wilbur looked at Tommy, scared and looking just a bit smaller than moments before, and realized he missed him so fucking much.
He grabbed the carton beside him and flipped it open. There was one last cigarette inside. Before he could think, he held it out towards Tommy. “Do you want to try?”
Objectively, this wasn’t that bad. He’d gotten Tommy to produce and sell drugs with him before. They were far past the tacit laws of what a minor could or couldn’t do that existed in a world that was now out of touch.
That said, Tommy had boundaries. Wilbur should’ve anticipated how bad of a look this was for him, yet still found himself startled when Tommy recoiled with a, “What the fuck!? Eugh, no!”
Wilbur wants to smoke with Tommy, just once, for the sake of bonding or proving a point or something or other. Tommy, unfortunately, is very reluctant to the idea.
Or, how Wilbur Soot started smoking again.

Sam fumbled for another cigarette from the newly opened pack and lit it. The lighter flame danced in his eyes, somehow doing nothing to make them feel less empty. Grian was struck by the sudden notion that it was just him and Sam alone in the world, and that the staticky flame was the only light for miles. He knew the idea was false and that Taurtis was sleeping just above them, but the late night and deep shadows made it difficult not to pretend.

Sometimes Grian can’t sleep, and sometimes Sam can’t sleep either. Sometimes they talk, sometimes they yell. Neither of them mention it the next morning.
