Summary:

Tobirama knows Izuna.

Some things are to be expected.

Notes:

My entry for day one of Izuna Week 2025, for the prompt ‘Celebration'.

Work Text:

Tobirama watches his friend and lover dart from stall to stall, exclaiming at the offerings. It's familiar behaviour of course, though previously only seen within the privacy of their own home, and he laughs under his breath when Izuna finds some yokan.

"Tobirama, look!" Izuna's words are muffled by the piece he shoved in his mouth, but still understandable. "More adzuki!"

"Yes," Tobirama reaches out, cupping his lover's cheek and wiping off the smear at the corner of Izuna's mouth. He'd always known that kitsune love adzuki just as much as they love aburage, but seeing it in person has been something of a revelation. "But you know you can't just pick food up and eat it."

"Why not!" Izuna pouts at him, completely ignoring the stall owner who looks somewhat nervous at being confronted with an onmyōji for a customer. "It's a festival of Inari! If I can't eat anything I want, then who can?"

As a kitsune, there's something to be said for that line of argument but they are trying to hide Izuna's true nature. Tobirama's hakama, far too large for Izuna, are doing an admirable job of keeping his tails out of view but it will all be for naught if Izuna won't stop stealing the offerings.

"Izuna." Tobirama stares at his lover impassively. "We've talked about this."

"Oh, fine." Izuna frowns at him - it's utterly adorable and Tobirama keeps his expression still with difficulty. "Pay the man if you want to!"

"Thank you." Fishing a few coins out of his sleeve, Tobirama hands them over and turns back just in time to see Izuna vanish into the crowd yet again.

It's revenge, he's sure of it, and he sets off in pursuit.

Still unused to walking on two feet even after months of practice however, Izuna hasn't gone very far and Tobirama catches up to him at a stall filled with teppô kitsune statues.

"Look, Tobirama! Look!" Izuna grabs his wrist, pointing enthusiastically. "Aren't they cute?"

"... why have they got hats." Tobirama squints at the statues, bewildered. "Does that one have fox ears? On its hat?"

"Their tiny Uchiwa!" Izuna is clearly not listening to a word he says. "We have to get one!"

"... you want one." Tobirama eyes his lover dubiously, trying to communicate the unspoken truth that he already has a kitsune in his life and doesn't need more.

"I'm me and this is a temple of Inari!" Izuna gestures at himself imperiously and his tails twitch under the concealing fabric. "Of course I want one! And one for Madara-nii, and Kuro-nee, and - "

"Izuna." Tobirama doesn't like to deliver bad news, but he's used to doing it. "I don't think we have enough money to gift your whole clan."

"Do we need money?" Izuna tilts his head, and Tobirama can almost see the ear twitch that usually goes with that expression. "This is a shrine."

"Izuna, we just discussed this." Tobirama rolls his eyes. "Yes, we have to pay for everything."

"Fine, then six." Izuna glares at him challengingly. "One for each of my siblings, and one for otousan!"

"Alright." Tobirama reaches into his sleeve again. "Just six."

"And you have to carry me!" Izuna grins, triumphant at having gotten his own way, and starts picking out the statues he wants.

"As you wish." Tobirama crouches slightly, waiting for Izuna to leap onto his back before wrapping his fingers around Izuna's thighs. "I don't mind."

Feeling Izuna wrapped around him is familiar and he takes comfort in it, though admittedly Izuna wasn't quite this sizeable before. At the same time, this position has benefits which aren't simply limited to preventing Izuna from wandering off and confusing unsuspecting stall owners by demanding free food.

He tightens his grip a little and Izuna squeaks with surprise in his ear.

Yes, Tobirama's always been happy to carry Izuna and he doesn't see that changing anytime soon.

Or at all.

Notes:

Omake:

Tobirama, lying down: Ow!

Izuna, struggling not to laugh: Kitsune in your futon?

Tobirama, dryly as he fishes a kitsune statue out from under the yogi: Yes, and not the one I was hoping to find either.

Izuna, laughing: Life's like that sometimes, yes.

On a completely different note, I set up a server on Discord for my writing and you can go poke me at Phlebas Writes.

Since I actually write directly onto the server, all the warnings for my stories apply to any content that may be found on there and I swear. Just FYI.

I'm also on Tumblr!
