Brad had considered about three different ways to respond (play along, flee, attack) but not done any of them before Jo had risen from her desk and bellowed, “It is NOT. Brad’s BIRTHDAY.”
Brad pressed his lips together but couldn’t altogether hide his smirk.
At least he had one person that he could—well, not rely on, that would be stupid. But he had one person.
The group from Mythic Quest – David, Ian, Poppy, a cake – stopped, slightly baffled.
Ian was the first to break, laughing, “Of course it is, David had it in his calendar.”

And Zach was good at it too. Twisting truths into lies and back again, until it would be too much work for Brad to unpick the truths from the lies and it was easier to live with Zach’s version of reality.
