I could stay right here (in this house with you forever)

Summary:

“I just wanted you to have a night where you didn't have to worry. Where I could just take care of everything. Guess I screwed that all the way up.”

Ryan steps closer and pulls her into another hug, holding on. “Babe, you didn't screw anything up. I like going out for food and being treated as much as the next girl, but... you know.” She feels her cheeks flush and grins into Sophie's shoulder at how corny she's about to be. “The real treat is just... getting to be with you.”

Or

Sophie's plans for her first date with Ryan go wrong. In the end, it doesn't matter.

Work Text:

The thing is, Sophie Moore isn't meant to get nervous.

She's a great shot, a capable fighter, smart at strategy. She's part of the Bat team, and she's out and proud now, and she's had multiple flings with multiple women and never got in her head about it.

And she was the one who kissed Ryan Wilder first. She did that. Ryan was the one overthinking, Sophie was the one who took the leap, and once they ironed out a few insecurities and got together, the hard part was meant to be done.

The other thing is, they've been too busy saving the world to go on a date yet, and now it's finally time, and Sophie is freaking out, because everything is going wrong.

She promised to buy Ryan dinner. That was the deal. And after getting in her head a hundred times about where to go, she'd finally figured out the perfect place. Small, intimate, the reviews promising the best vegan food in Gotham. They'd agreed an evening, and she'd called ahead and made reservations, and everything had been going great.

Sophie stares at her phone like that'll make the restaurant's email vanish. But no, it stays there, sending their sincerest apologies and telling her the reservation has been cancelled due to 'serious staffing issues'.

The worst part is, the email arrived this morning. They gave her at least some notice. But checking emails isn't exactly a priority when you're part of a superhero's secret team in Gotham, the city where something is always going wrong.

So now she's meant to meet Ryan in less than two hours, at a restaurant that's not even going to be open.

She stares into the mirror she's been sitting at, halfway through her makeup, and twists her fingers together.

Turns out, Sophie Moore definitely gets nervous.

Ryan's not sure what she was expecting, when her girlfriend answered the door to her apartment, but it wasn't this. Sophie's hair is half-done, her feet are bare, she's wearing casual leggings under her gold dress, and her eyes look kinda wild.

She's still beautiful, of course she is, and Ryan isn't any less happy to see her because she's not perfectly put together, but... she is a little worried something could be wrong.

“Hey, Soph,” she says, pulling her in for a quick hug. “Is everything okay?”

Sophie plasters on a grin. “Yeah, everything's great, I...” Her face falls. “Okay, no, it's not.” She shuts the door and starts pacing back and forth. “So the restaurant cancelled our reservation this morning, but I missed the email, because, you know, Bat team stuff, and I only found out like, less than two hours ago, halfway through getting ready, so I've spent a bunch of time calling up other places and asking if they had space, but I guess everyone in all Gotham is going on dates tonight, because none of the places with good vegan options had availability, and by the time I finally gave up there was no time left to get ready, so...” She sighs, runs her hands through her hair, mussing it more than it already is. “Basically, I'm a mess, and I screwed up our first date.”

“Hey, our first date was dinner with Professor Pyg, remember?”

Sophie flashes her a grin, but her face falls again. “I'm sorry. I just... I really wanted to treat you. You work so hard all the time, as Batwoman and at Wayne Enterprises, and... I just wanted you to have a night where you didn't have to worry.

“The real treat is just... getting to be with you.” She pulls back, looks Sophie in the eyes. “And hey, we can just order in. You don't even need to get all dressed up. You know you're always beautiful.”

Sophie smiles back at her sheepishly. “I told myself I wasn't gonna get in my head about this, but I guess I lied. I just... this is our first real date. And... I really like you, Ryan Wilder. It triggered some of the old fears for me, I guess, that if I didn't make this perfect... I could lose the best thing that's happened to me in a really long time.”

“It'd take way more than one cancelled dinner for you to lose me,” Ryan promises. “I'm kinda feeling like takeout anyway.”

Sophie nods. “Okay. Yeah.” She winces. “One favour though. Please don't tell the rest of the Bat team about this?”

Ryan winks. “No promises.”

Sophie pushes her shoulder and laughs, shaking her head. “Anything I can do to get a promise?”

Ryan considers it for a moment, then grins at her. “I mean, you said a treat, right? A kiss could be a good start.”

Sophie rolls her eyes. “Bad line, Wilder.”

“Yeah, but you like me a lot, so.”

“You're impossible,” Sophie groans, and leans in to kiss her.

Yeah, Ryan thinks. As far as treats go, just being here with Sophie, getting to kiss her, is so much more than enough.

Notes:

not sure how this turned out, i was in a bit of a rush this evening, but drop a comment if you enjoyed it at all <33

notes:
- i feel like Sophie seems quite 'collected' a lot of time but we see her actually have a lot of anxiety about relationships and stuff under the surface, so i could see her getting too stressed about this
- i love these characters a lot but i don't feel super familiar with them in the way i do my regular pairings, so idk how in character this felt, it's been a sec since i watched this show! lmk what you thought <3
