a nonsensical type of love

Summary:

Valentine's Day was rapidly approaching and, as everything was with Subspace, Medkit couldn't just celebrate it with him in a normal way. The thought of taking him out to dinner or getting him chocolates was a nice one, but it didn't matter, considering he had no sense of taste. Medkit was never the best at choosing gifts for his loved ones, so it always led to immense stress when it came time he needed to get one. It wasn't that he didn't want to, it was that he never knew what to get.

Notes:

“they wouldn't do that 🙄🙄🙄” ok yeah anyway here's subkit valentine's fluff. enjoy

Work Text:

Valentine's Day was rapidly approaching and, as everything was with Subspace, Medkit couldn't just celebrate it with him in a normal way. The thought of taking him out to dinner or getting him chocolates was a nice one, but it didn't matter, considering he had no sense of taste. Medkit was never the best at choosing gifts for his loved ones, so it always led to immense stress when it came time he needed to get one. It wasn't that he didn't want to, it was that he never knew what to get.

In the end, he settled on getting him flowers, and having a nice night in with him– all while hoping and praying it wouldn't come across as insincere. While, yes, it was going to be a night in, he still wanted to dress nicely for the occasion. He spent far too long shuffling through his wardrobe, trying to decide on the best thing to wear. He settled on a red dress shirt and black dress pants and prayed he didn't look too tacky. Before the fact he went to the store and bought an assortment of wines, since that at least was something Subspace could technically enjoy, if only for the after effects. He had the genius idea of dressing Missy up for the occasion, considering they would be at his house– so he got her a little pink bowtie and skirt. Subspace was practically head over heels for her, so he was certain he would appreciate the gesture.

He set the table up with flowers in the center and arranged the wine bottles around the flowers, prepared the couch by piling up pillows and blankets, and got several appropriately romantic movies ready for the night. Missy slept in her bed in her little bow tie and skirt by the sofa, and it seemed everything was about ready. Despite this all, he couldn't help but feel terribly nervous that everything was going to fall flat and that it wouldn't be enough. Truly, he wished things could be more simple than they were (As much as he loved Subspace, he was difficult).

The doorbell rang, and Medkit rushed to answer the door. When he opened it, he nearly fell flat on his face. Subspace stood there, his hair braided, wearing a beautiful, long sleeve, lacy red dress. Knowing him, it was probably custom tailored. It looked expensive. He looked stunning. Medkit had to resist the temptation to pin him against the wall and kiss the air out of his lungs.

“Hi Meddy~!” He lifted his hands and presented a box of chocolates and flowers to him. “It's dark chocolate!”

“Thank you, darling.” Medkit took the flowers and box of chocolates and set them aside before pulling him into a hug.

“I'm so excited!” Subspace chirped.

“I hope everything is adequate,” Medkit murmured.

“You've set up so nicely~ it's more than adequate!”

They walked inside and Medkit brought Subspace to the dining room table, where they sat across from each other. Subspace rested his chin in his hand and smiled sweetly at him– the better way to describe it was sickeningly sweet.

“Let's have some wine, hm?” Subspace purred.

“Sure.”

Medkit grabbed two wine glasses, pouring one for Subspace and one for himself, then passed Subspace’s over to him.

Subspace lifted his glass. “Cheers!”

Medkit swished around the liquid in his cup, staring at it absentmindedly.

“You're a little lost in thought, aren't you?” Subspace observed, Medkit glancing over at him. “Care to share your thoughts?”

“I suppose I wish there was more I could do for you,” he admitted and set his glass down. He suddenly didn't have a taste for the wine in his cup.

“Medkit, even if you could give me a traditional Valentine's Day, you'd still feel it's inadequate.”

He narrowed his eye at Subspace.

“A little too on the nose? Oops!”

Medkit sighed. “Maybe you're right.”

“Oh, I'm always right~” he chuckled. Medkit rolled his eye. “But I digress. This is more than enough for me~ you really know how to treat a guy!”

“I would like to believe that.”

Medkit swallowed down the rest of his wine and poured another glass. They both drank a few glasses before they moved to the couch. When Subspace noticed Missy, asleep in her bed, he practically swooned.

“Oh, little Missy! Look at you, pretty girl!” he cooed at her. Missy woke up and stretched before walking over and rubbing against Subspace's leg.

“I thought you'd appreciate her outfit.”

“Oh golly, do I ever!” Subspace sighed dreamily and picked Missy up. “My sweet girl~”

They sat down on the sofa together, cuddled up with Missy lying in Subspace's lap. Their little family. Subspace rested his head against Medkit's shoulder, and he wrapped his arm around his side.

“Hey, Meddy?” Subspace's voice was uncharacteristically soft.

“Yes?”

“Sometimes, I wonder why you chose me.”

Medkit remained silent for a moment. Considering what he should say. The truth? He didn't always know why he chose Subspace, either. “It had to be you, I think. It couldn't have been anyone else.”

“Hm. Trapped with me, huh?” Subspace chuckled lightly, but he could hear the hurt in it.

“I don't think that's such a bad thing.”

Subspace was beginning to purr, and he nuzzled his head against Medkit. “Maybe it doesn't have to make sense. I guess that's okay too~”

Medkit kissed Subspace on the top of his head. He thought about that. Maybe it doesn't have to make sense. Maybe he was right. Maybe it was okay, that it was strange that they were together. Maybe none of that mattered. They were each other's, and it didn't have to be any other way. He couldn't imagine it any other way if he tried.
