Conversations

Summary:

Michael and KITT unite as partners to bring to justice those who operate above the law, but what happens between and/or after assignments?

Notes:

This work will consist of a series of conversations (in my imagination) between events from Knight Rider's four seasons, as well as post-canon content.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: After the Beginning¹

Summary:

The conversation takes place after the pilot: Knight of the Phoenix.

Chapter Text

Michael enters lab 3 at FLAG's HQ and observes technicians completing the last repairs on the Knight Industries Two Thousand. He eyes the black car intently, noting the sleek lines and advanced technology integrated into its design. Approaching the machine, he runs his fingers along the smooth surface of the hood, marveling at the sophisticated sensors and wiring. When KITT activates his Anamorphic Equalizer, Michael experiences a surge of excitement. The car’s dashboard lights flicker to life, and KITT's voice fills the air, smooth and confident. “May I have a conversation with you, Michael? There are some things I like to ask."

"Sure, KITT. What do you want to know?" Michael opens the driver's door and sits inside the gleaming interior, feeling the embrace of the leather seats.

"Why did you refuse to give me control of the car repeatedly after your injury to your shoulder? Our past conversations from the mission are inside my memory banks, but I'd like to know the real reason."

Michael takes a moment to gather his thoughts. "It was a matter of control, KITT. Before my life changed, I had control of my aspirations and myself. I lost everything when that bullet struck my face. Your creator changed me without my consent, and I guess I still resent it a little."

"Do you resent me?" KITT asked, his voice quiet.

"No, KITT," Michael replied, shaking his head. "You're not the one I blame. You've been my ally through all of this, but sometimes I can't help but feel like I’m still fighting for my identity in a world that feels foreign."

"I'm programmed to serve you, but at times, I wonder if I truly understand what you need beyond that," KITT responded thoughtfully. "Your struggles are valid, Michael, and while I may be just a machine, I strive to be more than a tool. Perhaps together, we can navigate this journey and find a way for you to reclaim your sense of self."

Michael paused for a moment, contemplating KITT's words. "Together," he echoed softly, realizing the beginnings of a bond transcended the boundaries of man and machine. "Maybe in this partnership, I can uncover the parts of myself I've lost along the way."
