A Big Blue Otter

Summary:

In the middle of the night, Nagi was stirred awake as he felt the warmth beside him shift. His brows furrowed slightly as he blinked his heavy eyelids open. The room was dim, only faint moonlight seeping through the curtains, but it was enough for him to see what had changed.

Reo wasn’t holding him anymore.

Instead, he was curled up, arms wrapped snugly around—

Bonobono.

Or Ah yes. Nagi. His boyfriend. And his 500$ four foot tall Bonobono.

Work Text:

Nagi flopped onto Reo’s bed, stretching out like a lazy cat. "Mmm, so tired..." he mumbled, eyes half-lidded as he stared at the ceiling.

Reo chuckled, standing beside him with his hands behind his back, hiding something. "You always say that, Nagi. But I have something that might wake you up."

At the mention of a surprise, Nagi tilted his head. "Huh?" His sleepy gaze flickered with curiosity. Anything from Reo was already a good thing—he didn’t really care what it was. If it was from Reo, he’d like it no matter what.

Reo grinned and pulled the wrapped package from behind his back, holding it out. "Here. I saw this and thought of you."

Nagi sat up, blinking slowly before taking the gift. "Huh… a present? From Reo?" He turned the package in his hands, feeling its soft edges through the wrapping paper. His lips curled into a small smile. "That’s nice…"

Tearing the paper away with little effort, his eyes widened as he uncovered the gift. Sitting in his lap was a massive, round plushie of Bonobono—the blue otter from his favorite manga. Its soft fabric and big, dopey expression looked just like the character he loved.

For a moment, Nagi just stared. Then, his hands squeezed the plushie, feeling its fluffiness. His lips pressed together, and something warm spread through his chest. "Reo… this is so cool," he murmured, voice softer than usual.

Reo’s expression lit up. "You like it?"

Nagi turned his gaze toward him, nodding. "Mhm. I like anything you give me." His fingers absentmindedly kneaded the plushie’s surface. "But this is really nice… it’s Bonobono."

Reo beamed, his smile practically glowing with happiness. "Of course! I know how much you like him, so when I saw it, I knew I had to get it for you."

Nagi stared at Reo’s face—the way his eyes sparkled and his excitement practically radiated off him. His chest tightened, but it wasn’t unpleasant.

Without thinking, he squeezed the plushie a little tighter.

"Thanks, Reo," he said, voice quiet but sincere.

Reo waved him off, still grinning. "You're welcome, Nagi."

Nagi was just about to sink back into the bed, clutching his new Bonobono plushie, when Reo suddenly grabbed his wrist and tugged him up.

"Come on, Nagi. Go brush your teeth and get ready for bed," Reo ordered, his voice firm but fond.

Nagi groaned dramatically, letting his body go limp. "Ugh… too much effort…"

Reo rolled his eyes and yanked him forward. "No excuses. Get moving."

With a heavy sigh, Nagi finally dragged himself to the bathroom, muttering under his breath about how pushy Reo was.

Reo, on the other hand, finished up quickly and returned to their room. He plopped onto the bed, stretching out before his eyes landed on the Bonobono plushie. With a smirk, he grabbed it and hugged it against his chest, testing out its softness.

By the time Nagi shuffled back into the room, his hair slightly damp from washing his face, he immediately whined. "Reooo…"

Reo looked up to see Nagi pouting at him, his gaze locked onto the plushie in his arms.

"This is softer than I expected," Reo teased, squeezing the plushie and nuzzling into it playfully.

Nagi’s pout deepened. "Reo should cuddle me instead," he grumbled, his voice bordering on a whine.

Reo chuckled, shaking his head in amusement. "You’re such a big baby, Nagi," he said, his tone dripping with fondness.

Without hesitation, Nagi climbed into bed and wedged himself between Reo’s arms, pushing the plushie aside and snuggling against Reo’s chest. His arms wrapped lazily around Reo’s waist, his body molding into the warmth he’d been craving.

Reo smiled softly, resting his chin against the top of Nagi’s head. "Better now?" he asked.

"Mhm," Nagi mumbled sleepily, already half-drifting off.

Reo reached over and turned off the light, the room falling into a gentle darkness. With Bonobono tucked to the side and Nagi nestled securely in his arms, Reo let out a quiet sigh, feeling perfectly content.

"Good night, Nagi," he murmured.

A sleepy hum was his only response as they both drifted off into a peaceful sleep.

Bonobono.

Nagi’s sleepy brain took a second to process the betrayal. He stared at the big blue plushie, its dumb, happy face squished against Reo’s chest, soaking up all the cuddles that should have been his. The plushie wasn’t even real, but right now, it felt like it was mocking him.

That stupid otter.

Annoyed, Nagi reached over and pried Bonobono from Reo’s grasp. It took a little effort—Reo had a surprisingly strong hold—but Nagi was determined. With one swift motion, he yanked the plushie away and unceremoniously tossed it off the bed.

Satisfied, he turned his attention back to Reo, who shifted slightly at the loss of warmth but remained asleep. Nagi huffed softly before pulling Reo back against him, wrapping his arms securely around his waist. He hooked their legs together, locking them in place, making sure that Reo wouldn’t escape again.

Reo mumbled something unintelligible in his sleep, his face pressing against Nagi’s shoulder.

That’s right. No more hugging anyone else, even if it’s just a dumb plushie.

Feeling victorious, Nagi closed his eyes and let sleep take over once again, this time with Reo exactly where he should be—right in his arms.

Morning light filtered through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the room. Reo stirred awake, stretching slightly before realizing he couldn’t move much—Nagi was clinging to him like a koala, arms snug around his waist and legs tangled with his own.

It wasn’t unusual. Waking up in Nagi’s hold had become a regular thing, and honestly, Reo didn’t mind.

But something felt… off.

He blinked a few times, his drowsy mind slowly waking up. Bonobono was gone.

Last night, the plushie had been nestled comfortably in his arms. Now, it was nowhere in sight.

Frowning slightly, Reo shifted a little and craned his neck to look around. That’s when he spotted the big blue plushie lying unceremoniously on the floor beside the bed.

Huh? Did I really sleep that bad? He wondered, slightly alarmed at his supposed sleeping habits. Had he really tossed it off the bed in the middle of the night? He didn’t think he moved that much in his sleep.

Shaking his head, he moved to sit up, intending to pick Bonobono up—

Only to be interrupted by a sleepy whine.

"Reo… don’t move…" Nagi’s voice was groggy and laced with drowsiness as he tightened his grip around Reo’s waist. His face nuzzled into Reo’s chest, his breath warm against Reo’s skin.

Reo blinked, then chuckled softly.

"So clingy," he murmured fondly, but he didn’t try to move again. Instead, he let himself relax back into Nagi’s arms, a small smile tugging at his lips.

Bonobono could wait.
