I Think I'll Regret This

Summary:

After finding solutions and persevering through the first two huge issues that came with moving, he finally was faced with big ol' problem number three. Actually meeting his roommate, who’s a product of the solution to problem number one, and living with them.

Kamimura had spoken to Hasegawa Ken briefly over short phone calls and information filled text messages, but it’s easy to mask who you really are through a screen. He’d be forced to get to know this guy, and he’d end up getting to know him in turn, whether he liked it or not. Seriously, what had he gotten himself into?

Or, a Hasemura roommate au where conditions are much better for them and they’re... relatively okay! At least more okay than they would be if they were kidnapped and forced to participate in a game of life and death.

Notes:

well hello my hasemura starved friends! boy oh boy do i have a treat for you. been cooking this up for about a month or so.

updates will probably end up on the slower end. i'll try for getting out a chapter at least once every two weeks, but i may end up lagging behind- schools been a bit (a lot) of a pain. it'll be rather inconsistent nonetheless.

i digress, i hope y'all love this as much as i do<3.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: [Prologue]

Chapter Text

A dragged out exhale left his nose like a dragon puffing smoke, hot and heavy. His shoulders sagged, his forehead resting on the wheel of his old ass Honda Civic Coupe as his grip on it tightened. He was still working on willing himself to leave the air conditioning.

He never enjoyed summer, especially not ones that were all humid like they were in Tokyo. After actually getting out another handful of minutes later, he rolled up his sleeves to escape a bit of the heat before picking up the first box packed into his car.

Stepping into the lobby of the apartment complex slightly relieved Kamimura of the weather. It wasn’t much cooler, but there was still a decent decrease in temperature. He headed straight for the elevator, pressing the call button with his clothed elbow.

The ride up was a short one, but he still found himself leaning on the back wall to support a bit of his weight. He was just thankful he was alone for now.

…He sighed heavily again when the elevator halted almost abruptly. Nevermind.

He pushed himself off of the wall before the door opened, a couple of people whose faces he didn’t even care to look at walking in and pressing one of the buttons. They were chattering amongst themselves while Kamimura shrank further into the corner, making himself as unnoticeable as possible.

Luckily, he survived the rest of the way up without needing to socialize, but here’s where he had to face huge problem number three. The one he’d been looking forward to the least.

Living in Osaka was fine. It wasn’t really that he had a problem living there, other than the unending increase in rent. He wouldn’t even have had much of a problem with that either though, not if there wasn’t a random decrease in being able to find work. A serious decrease.

Apparently people didn’t feel like killing each other so much anymore, not around there anyway. The most well paying jobs he could find always ended up being a three hour bus ride –or longer– away.

So when you’ve got increased rent on top of a lack of work, on top of being knee deep in debt, on top of feeling like shit at every waking moment of your existence, that kinda feels like God screaming at you to get your shit together and get the hell out.

And well, that’s what Kamimura did. He decided pretty quickly on moving to Tokyo; it was a large enough city with plenty of transportation options. Hopefully people would be a little more eager to kill each other there.

This raised several large problems, though. The first being that he had no money, and moving to Shibuya wasn’t exactly inexpensive. This one took him about a week's worth of contemplation, but he ended up hesitantly settling on finding a roommate.

Was that ideal? Hell no. He didn’t like sharing space with anyone , let alone sharing space with some stranger he doesn’t know in a place he’s never lived at before 24/7. …However, it meant much lower rent. And nobody said it had to be permanent. Solution to problem one: get a roommate temporarily, move out when he eventually reaches financial stability.

The second problem was how he was actually gonna get there. Well, not exactly that– he knew how. He was gonna throw all his luggage in his car he barely used and drive.

Driving for six hours straight would be… difficult with his current condition –that’s where the real issue came in. Not that he couldn’t do it, he was plenty capable. He just had a hard time staying focused and alert and awake these days, at least to the point you should be at when on the road.

There wasn’t an actual solution to be found for this one, though. So he just opted for doing it anyway, and taking breaks where he needed to. He got past this one, but it took him almost triple the amount of time it should have. Whatever. It was over and done with, and that’s what really mattered.

…Now came big ol' problem number three. Actually meeting the roommate, and living with them.

He’d been standing in front of the door to their apartment for like… ‘dunno, ten minutes by then? He really wasn’t liking the sense of dread that had built up, crawling up through him and sticking to the insides of his ribcage like some kind of mold. It was really putting him off.

His palms literally felt clammy. God, this was embarrassing. He pulled in as deep a breath as he could manage through parted lips as he removed one of his hands from the box he’d been carrying and up to the door. He knocked finally, probably weaker than he should have.

There’s no way he wouldn’t come to regret this.

Notes:

the prologue is much shorter than the actual chapters will be- expect about 3,000-5,000 words/chapter past this point. :3

also i don't have the plot fully structured, just vague ideas of where i want them to end up and bullet point lists for how i want the first handful of chapters to go, so that's why i don't have a set number yet. will try to sort through all of that before i get too deep in but alas, i can't promise anything as of now.
