Spinning all these stories

Summary:

A collection of drabbles written for various Silmarillion theme weeks on Tumblr.

Currently posting: Ainur week
To be posted in the future: Eönwë, Fëanorian, Family, Silvergifting and Russingon weeks

Notes:

So yeah, as the title (inspired by "skinny bitch" by Lena Meyer-Landrut) implies I've been writing... a lot these past few years and forgot to share many works (oh believe me, too many) on here.
Now that I've slowed down a bit and found some time in-between Life Events™, I'm trying to fix that; I want my AO3 to be the place where most if not all of my writing goes, as a sort of personal record of my progress. And maybe you'll enjoy some of these along the way.

So, without further ado, dear reader: Thank you for coming here, grab a beverage of your choice, sit down and enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Power dynamics [Manwë x Varda]

Summary:

Manwë watches his queen work.

Warnings: /

Chapter Text

Her glorious form stretched across the night sky, like pearls and ribbons of light shrouded by vast nebulae in which she lovingly shaped her stars.

Manwë sat on the outstretched palm of one of her hands, watching his wife's work in silent awe.

"Be patient a while longer, my love," Varda said and gingerly caressed his smaller form with her thumb. Her touch left a trace of glittering sparks.

"Please take your time," Manwë replied and leaned into her caress, his feathers fluffed up in delight as if to entice her to continue petting him. "I could watch you forever."

Chapter 2: Life among the stars & Flight [Eönwë & Ilmarë]

Summary:

Eönwë keeps having no success with Arien. Ilmarë may have had more luck.

Warnings: /

Chapter Text

"You return late."

"So do you."

Ilmarë laughed and zoomed past him like a shooting star, prompting Eönwë to fly faster to keep up.

"How is Arien doing?" he asked, hoping his words would seem innocuous, but the look in her eyes revealed that she knew the true purpose of his question.

"She still won't let you or Tilion come close, hm?" Ilmarë giggled. "But worry not. I visit her occasionally, and she is well."

"So she lets you come close," Eönwë concluded, attempting to conceal his disappointment.

Ilmarë's gaze twinkled, and she smiled mysteriously. "Her fire doesn't hurt me."

Chapter 3: Craftsmanship [Curumo x Aiwendil]

Summary:

Curumo made a special gift for Aiwendil.

Warnings: /

Chapter Text

"I made this for you."

Aiwendil's warm brown eyes widened and lit up when Curumo presented a birdhouse to him. After days of meticulous sketching, woodworking and painting, he had crafted what he believed to be the ideal home for the younger Maia's many feathered friends. Alas, his experience with this particular material was still lacking, but he had tried his best – and Aiwendil seemed to find no fault with it.

"It's so beautiful," he chirped and held it up against a tree, then paused and glanced over his shoulder.

"Umm, how do I...?"

Curumo laughed. "Let me help you."

Chapter 4: Relationship with nature [Aulë x Yavanna]

Summary:

Aulë admires his wife's work.

Warnings: /

Chapter Text

"What a lovely construction."

Yavanna laughed as she watched Aulë examining a sunflower with reverent fascination while she braided his hair, occasionally sneaking flowers between his earthy brown locks. How long would it take him to notice this time, she thought to herself with a little snicker; her dear husband was prone to forgetting everything around him when he got lost in his thoughts.

"Almost perfectly symmetrical," Aulë continued his musings.

"But never completely," Yavanna said. "As is the nature of living things."

"It is," Aulë agreed. "But then again, your work has never needed perfect symmetry to be beautiful."

Chapter 5: Relationship with Elves [Ossë x Uinen]

Summary:

Uinen forces Ossë to apologise for his mischief.

Warnings: /

Chapter Text

"Would you like to say something to our friend, Ossë?"

Círdan had to suppress a laugh when he watched Uinen balancing on her tail with her arms crossed, glaring at her husband whose ear fins were flicking nervously.

"Umm..."

Ossë attempted his usual grin, though it ended up looking very sheepish.

"So I may have made a... tiny storm the other day and... it may have accidentally crashed someone's beach wedding..."

"And?" Uinen's glare was deadly.

"And I'm sorry," Ossë mumbled.

Círdan nodded solemnly, trying his best to remain serious. "Very well, old friend. I shall pass on your apology."

Chapter 6: Romance [Salmar & Ulmo]

Summary:

Synopsis: Ulmo is looking for a suitable gift for his beloved friend. Salmar has an idea.

Warnings: /

Chapter Text

"Manwë summons me."

Salmar looked up at his lord, smiling as he saw the warm glow in his eyes when he spoke of his beloved king and friend.

"Would you like to bring him a gift?" he asked.

Ulmo nodded, too lost in his thoughts to notice his amusement. "I do, but what else could I give him? Pearls, seashells, gems, he already has it all..."

"Why not your music?" Salmar held up one of the Ulumúri. "I'm sure he would love it."

"You think so?" Ulmo took it and smiled. "Then I shall give him this. Thank you, Salmar."

Chapter 7: Hunting & family dynamics [Oromë x Vána]

Summary:

Vána explains the meaning of her sister's message.

Chapter Text

"Does your sister hate me?"

Vána laughed when she saw her husband's dejected look. "No, my love, I assure you she does not."

"She planted a huge oak in the middle of my halls and Aulë advised me not to fell it," Oromë said. "I always assumed it was done out of spite because of my hunting."

Vána shook her head. "You misunderstood. Yavanna merely means to remind you to be a part of nature when you hunt, not its enemy."

Oromë's face lit up then, and he nodded. "Aye, she is very wise. I shall take it to heart."

Chapter 8: Hunting & legends [Tilion x Arien]

Summary:

Legends say he chases her to this day.

Chapter Text

She was the most elusive creature he had ever pursued. Radiant like the stars littering the sky that was their new home, fierce like a majestic beast, beautiful as if the Flame Imperishable itself shone in her face.

Tilion wanted nothing more than to approach her, but he knew Arien wouldn't let him. Be it pride or painful memories of another lover, she spurned his affection.

Even so, he kept following her, as was his duty, as well as his heart's desire.

Legends speak of his love for her, and Tilion continues to chase his beloved Arien to this day.

Chapter 9: Death & fate [Námo x Vairë]

Summary:

One sees the past, one sees the future. In the present they come together.

Chapter Text

She wove the past into her tapestries, telling stories of fortune and misfortune, life and death with the work of her hands.

His eyes saw the future, stories that haven't been told and won't be told for ages to come, but his lips remained sealed and his hands still; those fates weren't his to reveal.

Yet time and time again one of her many restless hands reached out to take his. Námo looked at Vairë just as she looked at him, and for a blissful moment, they were together in the present – only them and their tale of quiet comfort.
