“Fuck you! You’ve ruined everything for me! Do you have any idea what you have done?”
Kaigaku seethed, it was much easier to stand up to his persecutor when he was lacking in his previous eyes and muscle.
“I could have had a life! Kids! A real goddamned job- something!” He breathed, “No, instead I must burn down here with you.” He spat
“I am sorry.” The man before him spoke, so familiar yet foreign at the same time.
“But, it was ultimately your choice, no?” He argued.
“My choice?! Hah! I really had some good options, didn’t I! I just wanted to live!— And look where that got me!”
“I am sorry.”
“Bullshit! How many people have you turned? Killed? What’s one more? I am sure that’s all I am to you!”
“Kaigaku, I-“
“Shut up!” Kaigaku interrupted, “You have no right to call me that! I am the only one who kept my name, unlike the rest of you. You disgust me, Kokushibo.”
“Michikatsu.”
“Huh?”
“Michikatsu Tsugikini. That is my name.”
“I-“
“I am sorry, Kaigaku. Truly, from the bottom of my heart. But what was I meant to do? If I were to let you go, I surely would have been punished by Master Mu- Kibutsuji. It was no matter if I was uppermoon one. He was cruel, you know this.”
Kaigaku stared at him.
He sighed, “Just leave me.”
“We are not so different.”
“Do not compare me to the likes of you.” He hissed
Michikatsu narrowed his eyes, “How many people have you said that to?”
“What?”
“Who else have you said that to before?”
Kaigaku stared blankly, “I- How do you- ?” He stumbled over his words.
“I have a brother, too.” Michikatsu muttered, as if it was a regret.
They stared at each other, in silence, for some time.
“No.” Kaigaku shook his head, “I have no siblings.”
