Second date update

Summary:

The story takes place between the 1st and 2nd seasons, different first meeting.
Buck's friends convince him to go on a blind date to get over Abby, and Eddie, well, Eddie is training to be a firefighter - he's divorced, new in town, and of course his friend from the academy wants to help him navigate the LA dating scene.

And you, my dear reader, you're sitting in traffic on your way to work, listening to the radio...

Notes:

This fic was inspired by tiktoks from a radio show of the same title ("2nd date update" from Brooke and Jubal in the morning). I recommend checking out a few, they're very funny... anyway, I thought about making a Buddie version of this show.
Enjoy <3

Work Text:

(Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me Much, fading into background)

Jubal: Today’s “second date update ” is a little mystery. We got an email describing, basically a silver screen date, and we’re baffled it didn’t turn into a second. I’m gonna let our listener tell us more about it. Hey Buck, how are you doing?

Buck: Hey, I’m good, thanks.

Jubal: Walk us through your date.

Buck (audible smile) : Right, so… I don’t do blind dates, but when my sister heard about it, she pushed me into giving it a shot. I met with the guy in the restaurant and the moment I saw him… damn…

Jubal: That good, huh?

Buck: I'm a pretty confident guy, but “way out of my league ” is a fair statement here (chuckle) He was a little bit distant at first and I talked a lot, I was nervous… but maybe 20 minutes in we’re talking like we knew each other for years and it’s fun and easy, and when the dinner was over I had a feeling we both didn't want this to end yet, so we went on a walk, we shared some ice cream… He did seem a little awkward when I flirted with him, but it was kind of cute…

Brooke (gently) : Maybe he wasn’t that into you?

Buck: Yeah, I thought that, so I toned it down, but when we went to a club for drinks he was the one who asked me to dance and well… (laugh) He didn’t leave me much room to doubt.

Jubal (also laughing) : Alright… And what’s the guy’s name?

Buck: Eddie.

Jubal: So how did your date with Eddie end?

Buck: I walked him to his car, his eyes kept darting to my lips, so I took this chance and kissed him. I mean, I wanted to do it throughout the whole evening, but also wanted to make an impression.

Brooke: And did you?

Buck: I think I did (shy chuckle) He was really into that kiss. Not to sound smug, but he didn’t say much after. He looked swooned as he drove off.

Jubal: If that’s the case then why do you think he hasn’t called you back?

Buck (worried) : Honestly, I-I don’t know… maybe I did something or-or was too much, but based on how it all went, it was a great date. For both of us. Unless I read the situation completely wrong.

Jubal: And nothing comes to you as a potential hiccup?

Buck: No, nothing. Believe me, I’ve played this date over in my mind many times… (softly) I-I kinda can’t stop thinking about him.

Brooke: Ok, that’s sweet.

Jubal: Ok Buck, just relax, we’re gonna play some music and when we get back, we’ll call Eddie and see how he feels about your date.

(music intermission)

Jubal : It's " second date update " time, where our listeners ask us to contact someone they went on a date with who doesn't answer their calls. We got an email from Buck describing his date with Eddie. It was a blind date, so Buck wasn’t too keen about it, but surprisingly they instantly shared a connection. Buck said that though flirting was a little bit awkward, Eddie was the one who asked him to dance, and was very into their kiss goodbye…

Brooke: So there was a spark.

Jubal: Yes there was, according to Buck, at least. Date was over two weeks ago and Buck simply can't stop thinking about Eddie...

Brooke: Awww...

Jubal: I know, right? But for some reason, Eddie doesn't reply to his messages. Buck is worried that maybe he was too much or did something wrong. Let's call Eddie and get to the bottom of this...

Calling...

... (kid's voice) : Hello?

Jubal (surprised) : Hi! Who am I speaking to?

Kid: Christopher.

Jubal: Hi Christopher, this is Jubal... May I speak to Eddie, please?

Christopher: He’s busy, he’s making breakfast… (heavy sigh) It’s not going well.

Jubal (soft laugh) : Maybe he should take a few minutes break? Could you ask him to come to the phone, please?

Christopher: Okay… Dad, it’s for you! Dad!

Brooke (quietly) : Oh! Mystery solved?

... (inaudible voices in the background, male voice) : Yes?

Jubal: Hi, I’m looking for Eddie.

Eddie: Speaking.

Jubal: Hi Eddie. This is Jubal from Brooke and Jubal in the morning .

Eddie (carefully) : O-kay...?

Jubal: It's a radio show, ever listen to us before?

Eddie: Uhm, no, sorry.

Jubal: That's ok. We're…

Eddie (concerned) : Did my son call you?

Jubal: No, no.

Eddie: Okay… uhm… hi.

Jubal: Hi, how are you?

Eddie (a bit confused but friendly) : I’m good, how are you?

Jubal: Good, good (charmed) thanks for asking. Eddie, we’re calling you because two weeks ago you went on a date with Buck. Is that correct?

Eddie: One moment... (sound of door closing) Yes, I remember Buck... wait, what's this about?

Jubal: Well, Buck emailed us, saying you seemed to have a great time…

Eddie: I did.

Jubal: ...but now... you're not responding to his messages. And we'd like to know what went wrong. You didn't like him? Something happened? What's the deal?

Eddie: No, nothing like that, it's just... not a good time.

Jubal: Like, not a good time to talk to us or not a good time to date?

Eddie (nervous): The second.

Jubal: Then why did you go on a date in the first place?

Eddie (more nervous) : It's just... I thought... It's me, ok?

Brooke: Ah, the infamous "it's not you, it's me ".

Jubal: Yeah Eddie, you gonna have to give us more than that.

Eddie (sigh) : I can't, but it's really not about Buck.

Jubal (calmly) : Ok, so it's something about the date. What happened? You met in the restaurant, had a nice meal... unless it wasn't nice?

Eddie (quickly) : No, it was.

Jubal: What did you eat?

Eddie (stunned) : I... I don't remember. We had ice cream.

Jubal: You ate ice cream for dinner?

Eddie: No, after dinner we went on a walk and we stopped for ice cream.

Jubal: What flavour did you have?

Eddie: Strawberry... I think.

Jubal: You think? (amused) I don't know, Eddie, you don't seem to remember much about that date.

Brooke: But he does remember Buck, right Eddie?

Eddie (kind of shy) : Yeah... I mean, we talked a lot, I didn't pay much attention to my meal...

Brooke: Aww, we know where your attention was…

Jubal (over Brooke) : That's something… That’s something Buck was worried about, that he talked too much and flooded you with too much stuff.

Eddie: No, he didn't. I mean... yes, he was jumping from one tidbit to the other, but it wasn't... overcrowding? Like... you know when someone talks passionately about something and you suddenly find yourself in the middle of a conversation about coconut rum ice cream?

Jubal (amused) : He had to be very passionate since you remember his flavour of ice cream and not yours.

Eddie (audible smile) : Man, you'd have to see his blue eyes and beaming smile...

Jubal: I feel like I did (trying not to chuckle) but something was off, right? We know you went to a club and he kissed you goodbye. Was he a bad dancer or a bad kisser?

Eddie: Neither. It's nothing like that. I had a great time, I haven't danced like that in years. And the kiss was... (sigh)

Brooke (soft chuckle) : Okay Eddie, you sound very smitten, you're clearly into this guy, but for some reason you're not returning his calls. So what is wrong with him?

Eddie (struggling) : Nothing, he’s great, it’s really… it’s nothing.

Brooke: He's too perfect to be true?

Eddie:

Jubal: Come on Eddie, there must be a reason you’re ghosting him.

Eddie (heavy sigh) : I don’t know what to say and the longer I wait the more complicated it gets.

Jubal: What gets complicated? You had a great date, you liked dancing with him, you remember his eyes, he stole your breath away… explain this to me Eddie, because I don’t see why you wouldn’t go out with him again. You like him, right? You liked the date.

Eddie: Yeah, I do.

Jubal (calmly) : Then… what’s the issue?

Eddie: It wasn’t supposed to be him.

Jubal (curious) : What do you mean?

Eddie: I thought… Jesucristo, this is embarrassing... My friend showed me a photo. There was a guy and a girl in that photo, siblings. She called them by their last name and I assumed she was referring to the girl when she was setting me up for the date. Only when I was already in the restaurant did I realize she set me up with a guy.

Jubal (laughing) : Oh this is priceless... So you prepared yourself for a date with a girl? Buck's sister to be exact?

Eddie (meekly) : Yeah…

Jubal: And it didn't occur to you to maybe tell him that?

Eddie (embarrassed) : Before I could come up with how to say it's a misunderstanding we were in the middle of a meal and it was too late.

Brooke: Oh, you were already charmed. Honestly it doesn’t sound so bad. Why not tell him that?

Eddie: Tell him what? Hey Buck, I had a great time, I'd like to do this all again. By the way, I'm straight. (sarcastic laugh) No, I don't think so.

Brooke (absolutely stunned): What?!… I’m sorry… what? I thought you’re also into guys.

Jubal (amused) : Wait, wait, wait, wait... hold on…You went on a date with a man but you're not gay… Oh wow, Eddie… I don’t think misunderstanding is the right word for that.

Brooke: So you’re ignoring Buck in hope that he'll figure it out for himself and move on, or what?

Jubal: I don't know. It sounds to me like Eddie is willing to explore it further. Am I right?

Eddie:

Jubal: Oh come on, you could’ve ended the date at any point. Hate to break it to you Eddie, but you may be into guys. Was it your first kiss with…

Buck (cutting in, protective) : Okay guys, no, that’s enough, stop.

Eddie (confused) : What’s going on?

Jubal: Well… I have great news for you Eddie (chuckle) you have a lot of stuff to figure out but what to say to Buck is not one of them. He heard everything. He’s listening to our conversation on the other line.

Eddie: Ay, Dios mio… (quietly) this is mortifying…

Buck (softly) : Hi Eddie.

Eddie (shyly) : …hey, Buck.

Buck: I’m very sorry I put you in the spotlight. I wouldn't have done it if I’d caught that this was new for you. I understand you want to think things through and I'm more than happy to venture there with you in whatever capacity you need…

Jubal: Smooth Buck, smooth…

Buck (seriously) : No, I mean it… Eddie, you’re really cool and being your friend would be awesome. I just… I don't want to push you into something you're not comfortable with.

Eddie:

Buck (nervous) : Eddie? Did he… did he hang up?

Eddie: No, I’m still here… (light laugh) I’m comfortable with you, Buck.

Buck (cheerfully) : You have no idea how happy I am right now.

Eddie: I can hear it… (audible smile, soft sigh) I guess I can’t get more embarrassed, I had a really good time on our date.

Buck: I’m glad (dreamily) the way you danced with me… damn Eddie…

Eddie: Yeah… I think about you too…

Jubal: Ok, love birds, I think I know the answer, but… Eddie, would you like to go on a second date with Buck? We’re paying for it. And just to be clear, it’s a date with a guy.

Eddie (laughing) : Yes, I’d like that.

Jubal: For formality, Buck?

Buck: Very much.

Jubal: Here we go guys, another successful “second date update ”. And this one put me in a mood for a song, so let’s take a little break and enjoy some music.
