To rewrite a story

Summary:

A force of the universe in form of 'the narrative' decides to take over Picards story because they don't like it having an ending at all.

(See the end of the work for notes.)

Work Text:

The narrative (Q) does not understand Picards anger. It's not a horror story it has planned out for him after all. No, it's supposed a good, happy and fun story. Jean-Luc has had had such a hard and to be honest boring life serving a glorified boyscout organization and spending too much time worrying about his little minions.

But now, that part of his story is over. And in the narratives eyes, really all that had happened up to this point had only been the first chapter, or maybe even only the introduction to the humans story.

After all, it has only been what? Sixty years? That's basically no time at all to get a really good story started.

Well, the narrative does not care that sixty years are plenty enough years for a human story. It does not want to give Picard a human story.

Human storys tend to end far too quickly and they usually aren't anywhere near as good as what the narrative has planned out for his Favorite.

It's going to be great, Jean-Luc and the rest of the universe will see. Full of adventure, excitement, exploration beyond anyones wildest imagination and love.

Because the narrative loves him. The narrative saw the story the universe had at first wanted to write for his beloved human, took the pen away from fate itself and now gives him what the universe owes to both of them.

It's a bit of a feverish writing sometimes and the narrative is aware that certain things might not make sense to Jean-Luc now. Might appear more malicious than they are meant to be.

The narrative asks Picard to be patient because it is not used to take over writing the entire story of just one person. Usually they are more of a force of nature that visits a variety of stories all at once. To focus on only one and to actually care about doing it right is harder than they would like to admit.

But Jean-Luc will forgive the narrative for all of this. Maybe not now. Maybe not even in the near future.

It disappoints the narrative to know that he thinks about all of this as some kind of 'doom'. It is not a curse but a blessing. A blessing so countless of other people have sacrificed entire civilizations to nameless and uncaring gods to in the hopes to achieve it. A blessing to live in a never ending story written and directed by someone who cares.

Someone who loves him.

So, Jean-Luc shouldn't feel caged and angry.

He should feel free.

Free and happy.

(Please)

Notes:

I love writing Q so in love with Picard to the point where it's actually kind of terrifying.
