Work Text:

Obi-Wan watched Padmé slip away, one more loss after a long day – days? He had lost track, the time between Utapau and the present had blended together in a long, dark fog – of nothing but loss after loss. He was left to comfort the twins who had never known it, before, who couldn’t understand yet no doubt felt their mother’s death. Orphaned, now, so soon after being brought into the galaxy, their mother dead by their father’s actions, and their father dead by…

Obi-Wan turned his thoughts away from that subject; he could not comfort them if he let himself think on that. He had little comfort he could give as it was, but they needed it, so he gave it.

Two bright spots in an ocean of darkness. It was a heavy burden to lay on them, to pin all his hopes of the future on two young children, but Obi-Wan could not do otherwise, if he was to have any hope at all.

A week ago, there would have been no question as to what to do with the now orphaned children. They would have been taken to the Temple and given a home there, but Obi-Wan could not offer that to them now. He could not offer them a home, or safety, or a family, or anything else that the Temple, that the Jedi Order had once given Force-sensitive children. The Temple was lost to them now, and even if the survivors were to reconvene elsewhere, Obi-Wan knew that the Sith would not be satisfied with this one blow against them, no matter how devastating it had been.

And if Sidious were to learn that these were Anakin’s children…

He needed to consult with Yoda and Bail, and find a way for their future to live on.
