Work Text:
Dazai never liked his glasses. They were gaudy, annoying to wear, and worst of all—impractical.
He never understood how Hirotsu could wear them without a care in the world. Maybe because he was an old man with poor eyesight. Albeit, the man wore a monocle, not glasses. But same difference.
But Dazai wasn’t an old man! He already had stupid braces, and glasses would only make him look even more ridiculous. Like a stereotypical nerd.
Mori tried for at least two years to get Dazai to wear his glasses, even getting numerous different frames to try and convince him, but Dazai was stubborn as ever.
They even tried contacts as an alternative, but Dazai, surprisingly and uncharacteristically, had an issue about touching his eyes (or, eye, he only had one on display).
The Demon Prodigy made a fuss over eyewear for no reason whatsoever other than, ‘they look stupid!’ in that whiny voice of his.
Dazai was scooting further and further away from Kouyou as she held a pair of glasses in her hand, scowling. “You need to wear them.” She urged impatiently. Even after half an hour, the little delinquent wouldn’t give in.
Dazai turned his head away like a toddler refusing food. “No! They’re going to make me look ugly!” He complained. “Besides, one of my eyes is covered, Kouyou!” He said pointedly, gesturing to the right side of his face.
“You don’t even need the bandages over your eye.” Kouyou sighed, bringing a hand to rub her temples tiredly. “Either you wear the glasses, or I will put the contacts in your eyes myself.”
The brunet huffed and crossed his arms. “No you won’t! You’re just trying to scare me, and it’s not working.” He scowled.
“No one will make fun of you.” Kouyou tried to reason, motioning the glasses around, an annoyed look on her face.
“I don’t care what anyone thinks about the stupid glasses, I just don’t wanna wear them, and if I don’t want to, then I shouldn’t have to.” Dazai argued, his brows furrowed defiantly as he sat crosslegged in the chair. “That’s not how it works.” Kouyou muttered with a shake of her head.
“I can see just fine.” Dazai practically hissed. Kouyou could have mistaken his fluffy brown hair for a fluffed up cat tail. “Besides, Chuuya would mock me!” He tried to reason once more. She deadpanned. “Dazai, You are horribly farsighted. You can’t even look at your paperwork without squinting and holding it ten inches in front of your face.”
Dazai scoffed as if she said something ridiculous. “That’s why I have the little hatrack! He’s my dog, and has to do what I say.”
Coincidentally, Chuuya entered the room at that moment, stomping over as he had heard what Dazai said. “I’m not your goddamn dog, Dazai!” He exclaimed, whacking him over the head with his hat. “Kouyou, he’s attacking me!” Whined Dazai.
Kouyou hummed and sipped her tea, turning a blind eye. “Karma.” She murmured into the cup. Dazai bristled. “Now you’re being petty.”
Chuuya saw the glasses in Kouyou’s hand, quirking a brow. “Are those yours? I didn’t know you needed glasses?” He curiously commented, holding them as she set them in his hands.
Dazai snorted, “she’s not that old, Chuuya.” He smirked. Kouyou glared, “they’re not mine. They’re his.” She looked at Dazai incriminatingly.
Chuuya blinked, following her line of sight to the taller boy. “Dazai needs glasses?” He fought back a laugh.
“You see, Kouyou? I told you he’d make fun of me!” Dazai’s face flushed with embarrassment. It almost made Kouyou smile until she remembered how much time of hers he had wasted by being a little nuisance. “No… you’re not making fun of him, right, Chuuya?” She smirked at the boy.
Chuuya made a face. “What? No, I totally am.”
Dazai chewed on his cheek. “I would say Chuuya’s a big, fat bully, but we all know he’s too little.” He shot a glare at Chuuya, “tiny peewee.”
”You son of a—!” Chuuya grabbed on Dazai’s collar gritting his teeth and shaking his shoulders violently. “Language, Chuuya.” Kouyou chastised.
Chuuya grumbled, almost growling, as he gripped the fabric Dazai wore with vigor. Dazai only smirked, smug and prideful.
“Why does this useless scarecrow even need glasses? He sees just fine.” Chuuya shoved Dazai to the ground, making him yelp in pain and call Chuuya a ‘bipolar pipsqueak’ under his breath. Chuuya kicked at his arm with a sharp look. “What did you say…?”
Kouyou sighed, “Dazai’s farsighted, he can see things far away from him just fine, but things in front of him are completely blurry.” She explained.
Dazai sat on the ground, looking away with a bashful expression. Chuuya looked at Dazai weirdly, “then why won’t he wear the damn glasses?”
“Because they look ridiculous!” Dazai exclaimed. “Can you imagine me with glasses?”
Chuuya shrugged and crouched down to Dazai’s level, slipping them onto his face. You would have thought Dazai had been stabbed by the way he shrieked and scooted away. Chuuya laughed at the sight.
What was ridiculous, was the fact Dazai didn’t even look half bad with glasses. Sure, the bandages on one side of his face made him look like an idiot, but Dazai always looked like an idiot.
Honestly, Chuuya thought it was quite cute. The frames were metallic and round, but it was short lived as Dazai chucked them at Chuuya’s face. The ginger caught them just in time, using his ability to ensure they didn’t stumble out of his hands. “Be careful, you brute!”
“Look who’s calling me a brute!” Dazai taunted. Chuuya then lunged himself at Dazai. “Boys!” Kouyou shouted.
—
Chuuya hadn’t managed to get the sight of a flustered, embarrassed Dazai out of his mind. It was weirdly endearing to see him not wear that stupid grin all the time. Chuuya would had forgotten that Dazai was even human if he didn’t see such a human emotion on his partner’s face.
Dazai had rarely ever displayed any sort of embarrassment, or abashment. But he got all awkward and nervous over Chuuya putting glasses on his face? Glasses?
Funnily enough, the next time Chuuya saw Dazai, he was with Mori and quite literally tied to a chair with little Elise coloring behind him to, likely, ensure no funny business. Mori stood in front of him, examining Dazai with large round glasses, different from the last ones, more circular and had thicker frames compared to the previous pair.
”Boss, stop! I don’t want to look like that stupid British wizard!” Complained Dazai. Chuuya walked over, “you wanted to see me, Boss?” He asked.
At the sound of his voice, Dazai jumped in alarm and immediately looked to the side, his head hung. “Ah, Chuuya! Yes, I wanted to see which glasses you think look best on Dazai.” He smiled innocently.
Chuuya cautiously approached, stopping just shy of where Elise sat. But Dazai was still turned away, grumbling softly. Mori cleared his throat and gestured towards Chuuya, his brows raised in a way Chuuya didn’t understand the implications behind.
Dazai sighed and looked over, albeit in an extremely slow manner. Chuuya hesitated as he examined Dazai’s face, but shook his head, “no… those don’t suit him… is there a reason I’m doing this and not… Kouyou?”
The brunet was a bright shade of red, his back hunched as if trying to curl in on himself. “You’re the perfect candidate to judge which glasses suit him best seeing as how you’re the person closest to him. Since Dazai is uncooperative, why not ask for help from the one person who knows him better than himself?” Mori gestured to Chuuya, smirking.
Apparently, Chuuya didn’t know Dazai well enough seeing as how he had just found out that Dazai even needed glasses in the first place. But, whatever. Chuuya didn’t care.
He did.
”Maybe the ones Kouyou was trying to put on him. Those fit him pretty well.” Chuuya suggested as he looked up at Mori. What Chuuya actually wanted to say, died on his tongue in the words, ‘anything could suit him and his stupidly handsome face’.
Mori sighed dejectedly. “Dazai broke them.” He shook his head. Dazai huffed and averted his gaze. “Well, I was getting annoyed.” He remarked bitterly.
Chuuya hummed, though looked disappointed. Dazai caught it the second it crossed Chuuya’s features. He grinned cheekily, “did Chuuya like what he saw?” He mused.
Chuuya’s cheeks reddened, “shut up, you bastard!” He exclaimed, pulling the glasses off and shoving a new pair on his face. Dazai groaned, sniffing with a frown, “Chuuya’s so rabid, he hurt my nose.” He mumbled.
Annoyed, Chuuya glared. A scowl in his brow. “Ew. Those look ugly. Too boxy for your long ass face.” Chuuya commented, taking them off once again. “The ones from before looked best on him. You should get him a new pair like that.” Chuuya told the boss, nodding his departure and exiting.
Dazai shimmied out of the rope binding and raced after Chuuya, prancing down the halls of headquarters.
Feigning irritation, Chuuya grimaced. “What do you want now, Shitty Dazai?” He asked with a roll of his eyes. Dazai grinned cheekily, “Chuuya had such a dopey look on his face… did he like what he saw?” He prodded at Chuuya’s face whilst giggling. Chuuya grumbled and swatted Dazai’s hand away. “I already told you to shut up about that! There was a lull!”
Dazai laughed, but not one of mockery. Chuuya had to do a double take, blinking in bewilderment. “W-what’s so funny?!”
”Your face got so red,” he chuckled, “it was cute.”
Chuuya gulped, glaring up at him. “This shit again? Stop with that…”
”Chuuya doesn’t sound so certain.” Dazai crooned and skipped ahead, humming before he looked back at the other, a soft grin on his face. “Maybe I do love Chuuya.” He prompted.
”Just wear the damn glasses when they come in, you stupid Mackerel. You need to see if you don’t want to be useless.” He poked at Dazai’s chest with force once he caught up to him. Dazai smirked. “Okay… only if you admit one thing…”
Chuuya sighed. “What is it?” He mumbled.
“You like seeing me with glasses.” Dazai leaned down slightly to Chuuya’s height, head cocked to the side like a dog. Chuuya hesitated, face heating up as he turned away.
”It’s not… just… the damn glasses…” he murmured. “It’s you, too.”
The look of shock and bewilderment on his face was priceless. It made Chuuya even more embarrassed. “Stop it…” he hissed.
”Can you say it?” He asked.
Chuuya tucked his hands into his pockets, his tongue suddenly feeling very dry, “say what…?” He grumbled, “I’m not gonna pour my feelings out like an idiot for everyone to hear.”
Dazai then tilted his head to the side, cupping his ear. “Whisper it, then.”
—
As expected, Dazai made a fuss over the goddamn glasses when they came in. Looking at himself in the mirror with puffed out cheeks and a prominent scowl on his face.
“Dazai, it’s not that bad.” Chuuya insisted from behind him, “you look… good..” he almost choked on the words, clearing his throat with a whine of annoyance.
Dazai looked at him, pouting like a child, “you’re not just mocking me?” He asked. Chuuya sighed and shook his head. “No, I’m not. You look nice.” He pushed the glasses up Dazai’s nose, the round spectacles nicely suiting his face.
Chuuya smiled softly, nodding. “Nice.”
Dazai’s face flushed. “Wanna try them on?”
