A Glimpse

Summary:

During his stay at Rivendell, Sam accidentally sees a meeting between Legolas and a mysterious elven woman.

Follows the book timeline in which they stay in Rivendell for roughly a month before leaving for Mordor.

Notes:

I don't own LOTR.

Nestrien is a LOTR oc I've had since I was 14 and saw the movies for the first time. I recently rediscovered a drawing of her while cleaning out my room at my parent's house, and decided to change her name from 'Ruby' (what kind of elf name is that?) and actually write some stuff for her and Legolas.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Samwise Gamgee did not spy. He was a good Hobbit, and not particularly mischievous - unlike Merry and Pippin. And, Sam maintained, he wasn't spying.

He'd been looking for Mr. Frodo when he heard voices and thought perhaps it was one of his friends. One of the voices had been Legolas, the elf that had been assigned to the Fellowship, and Sam had peered through the bushes to see if the other person was Mr. Frodo.

It wasn't. It was a woman, probably an elf. Sam had seen his fair share of pretty things, and although Rosie would always be the prettiest girl he'd ever seen, the elf woman was very beautiful.

She had the same pointy ears as Legolas, and she looked like she was only an inch shorter than him. Sam was getting used to tall people, with both the towering Strider and all the elves he'd met, but it was still a shock to see such tall people. Especially such a tall woman.

The elf had golden blonde hair, and although Sam couldn't see her eyes he imagined they were a similar color to Lord Elrond's, or perhaps his daughter Arwen's.

Sam decided to stay and watch for a moment, because maybe they were talking about Mr. Frodo.

"Nestrien," Legolas said. "I must go."

The elven woman, apparently named Nestrien, let out a long breath. "It's dangerous."

Legolas nodded. "I know. I fear what could happen, but I know that it's our fault Gollum escaped from his cell in Mirkwood. I feel it is my duty to follow the Ring and it's bearer to see it's destruction."

The woman - Nestrien - placed her hand on his cheek. "I always noticed when you came in for healing that wasn't necessary."

"And you allowed it?" Legolas asked, and Sam thought it might be surprise in his voice.

Nestrien laughed. "Truth be told, I found you attractive. I liked the idea of you coming to see me, ernil."

Sam cocked his head at the word. He thought it might be the language of the elves, but he didn't know what it meant.

"I liked the idea of seeing you."

Nestrien smiled, but her hand dropped from Legolas's face. "Le melin, Legolas. If you die on this quest I shall mourn you many months. I would not enjoy telling King Thranduil of his son's death."

"If luck be on our side," Legolas said, taking Nestrien's hand and placing a kiss to it, "you shall have to do neither."

Nestrien flushed, but placed her hand over his. "I'll be in Rivendell when you come back. Even as war wages around us."

"I doubt that," Legolas said with mirth in his eyes. "I am sure that if war is waging, you will be in the army, notching your bow."

Nestrien smiled. "You know me well after two thousand years, Anor galad."

"I watch closely, Êl Gail," Legolas responded with a smile.

Sam decided they probably weren't going to talk about Mr. Frodo, and left.

Notes:

Ernil - Prince

Le melin - A serious way to say 'I love you'

Anor galad - Shining sun

Êl Gail - Star Bright

I had fun with Sindarin translators, hopefully they're somewhat accurate.
