“No, Chris, you're still having nightmares! You can barely handle me bringing up what happened. Now you want to go back?” Ashley's voice was rising as she ripped into him. He understood that she just cared about him. That still didn’t stop the anger that was slowly building in his chest.
“I’m a grown man, Ash. You think I don’t know that? I know I’m still scared, but it’s my life. Mrs. Washington's son is missing. And let’s be honest, he’s probably dead.” He could see Ashley’s eyes widen slightly as she curled her arms around herself. “She is only asking me for one favor. This is the least I can do.”
Ashley looked at him with tears in her eyes. “I just want you to be safe, Chris.”
He could feel the anger leave his body. He felt bad because he knew she had his best interest in mind.
“I know, baby,” he said as he hugged her, his face resting on top of her head. “I just need to do this.”
