A Day Like No Other

Summary:

During the Starfall Islands incident, Sonic had always seen Sage as Eggman’s AI creation – someone deeply tied to his longtime rival. But after everything they had been through, he realized she was more than just a program; she was a person. And today, for the first time, they were just two individuals – no battles, no world-ending threats, no supervision; just Sonic and Sage... as friends.

Notes:

Spoilers for Sonic Frontiers incoming.

Work Text:

Sonic never expected the invitation.

“Father has given me authorization to spend the day outside the base,” Sage had told him. “I wish to understand... what it means to simply ‘hang out’ with a friend. Would you accompany me?”

Sonic had blinked in surprise. Eggman allowing Sage to leave his fortress unsupervised? That was new. But even stranger was the idea that Sage wanted to spend time with him. Not as an enemy. Not as an obstacle. Just... a friend.

He smirked. "Alright, Sage. Let's see if I can show you what fun really looks like."

Their first stop was Green Hill Zone, where Sonic would teach Sage how to “run with feeling” for the first time. Sage had witnessed Sonic's speed countless times, but she had never experienced it herself.

“You don’t have to actually run, y’know,” Sonic teased. “You can just float like usual.”

“I wish to try it,” Sage insisted.

So she ran. And she stumbled. A lot.

Sonic, watching her awkward, mechanical strides, tried not to laugh. “Okay, okay – your form’s all wrong. Here, let me help.”

He gently adjusted her posture, guiding her stance. “Lean forward a little, feel the momentum, and let yourself flow with it. Running isn’t just movement – it’s freedom.”

Sage processed his advice and tried again. This time, she lasted longer before tripping. Sonic caught her before she hit the ground.

She looked at him, eyes full of something new. “...This is difficult.”

Sonic grinned. “Yeah, but that’s what makes it fun.”

For the first time, Sage understood what it meant to push beyond limits – not through calculations, but through feeling.

Their next stop was a quiet meadow, where the wind carried the scent of wildflowers.

Sage watched as Sonic flopped onto the grass, arms behind his head, eyes closed. “What are you doing?”

“Relaxing,” he replied. “You should try it.”

She hesitated before sitting down beside him. Her sensors detected everything – the warmth of the sun, the gentle brush of the wind, the distant hum of nature.

“It is... peaceful,” she admitted.

“Yup.”

They sat in silence for a while. Then Sonic chuckled. “Y’know, for an AI, you worry too much.”

Sage tilted her head. “I am programmed to process probabilities – to analyze risks.”

“Yeah, but not everything needs to be calculated.” He rolled onto his side to look at her. “Sometimes, the best moments are the ones you don’t plan.”

She pondered this for a long time.

As the sun began to set, Sonic led Sage to an old, abandoned playground. It was falling apart, but one thing still worked: a rusty, slightly out-of-tune piano left forgotten near a small stage.

Sage’s fingers hovered over the keys. “A piano.”

“You play?” Sonic asked.

“I... believe I can.”

She pressed a few keys, and a soft, haunting melody filled the air. It wasn’t complex, but there was feeling in it. Emotion.

Sonic sat on top of the piano, listening quietly. “That’s really nice, Sage.”

“I have access to vast amounts of musical data,” she explained. “But I do not know if I am truly... playing.”

Sonic smirked. “If it comes from you, then it’s real.”

Sage paused before continuing to play. This time, she wasn’t following calculations or programmed compositions - she was simply playing the piano.

As night fell, Sonic and Sage stood on a hill, looking at the stars.

“I must return to Father soon,” Sage said.

Sonic stretched. “Yeah, figures. But hey, today was cool. We should do this again sometime.”

Sage hesitated. “You... would want to spend time with me again?”

“Why wouldn’t I?” Sonic grinned. “You’re pretty fun to hang around.”

Something changed in Sage’s expression – an emotion she couldn’t quite define. But it felt warm.

“I... would like that,” she admitted.

As Sonic watched her disappear into the night, he smiled to himself.

The world was always changing. And maybe, just maybe, this was the start of something new.

A real friendship.
