The wind rushed through Sonic’s quills as he zipped through the lush countryside, a big grin plastered across his face. He hadn’t been to his childhood home in ages, and with all the craziness of fighting Eggman, stopping world-ending threats, and going on interdimensional adventures, a quiet day with family sounded… nice.
“Hope Mom’s got some chili dogs ready,” Sonic muttered, licking his lips. “And if not, I know what’s for dinner.”
In the distance, he finally spotted the cozy wooden cottage nestled among the hills. The place looked exactly like he remembered – except for the massive graffiti mural of a neon guitar plastered across the side of the house.
Sonic skidded to a stop in the front yard, blinking. “What the heck-”
“SONIC!”
Before he could react, Queen Aleena swept him up into a surprisingly tight hug.
“Whoa-ho! Mom! A little warning next time!” Sonic laughed, hugging her back. “Gotta say, didn’t expect the ‘tackle-hug’!”
Aleena chuckled, her royal demeanor softening as she ruffled his quills. “My son, after all these years, do you really think I wouldn’t smother you the second you came home?”
“...Fair point.”
A loud crash from inside interrupted the moment.
“MANIC! YOU BROKE MY KEYBOARD!”
“Uh... nah, nah, Sonia, I modded it! Now it makes guitar sounds!”
Sonic smirked. “Yep. Definitely home.”
As Sonic stepped inside, the familiar scent of home – warm wood, old band posters, and a hint of motor oil – hit him.
His sister, Sonia, was standing in the living room, holding a broken synth keyboard with a look of absolute rage. Their brother, Manic, was standing across from her, looking way too pleased with himself.
Sonic folded his arms. “Alright, what did I miss?”
“THIS DOOFUS MODIFIED MY KEYBOARD-“
“It’s called INNOVATION, Sonia! Gotta move with the times!” Manic grinned. “It sounds sick now, dude. You should hear it!”
Sonia turned to Sonic with a dramatic sigh. “Finally, someone with actual sense – Sonic, tell him he can’t just turn my beautiful keyboard into a guitar!”
Sonic raised an eyebrow. “Well... does it sound cool?”
Manic grinned wider. “Oh, bro, you gotta hear it.”
Before Sonia could protest, Manic smashed a button on the now-questionably-functional keyboard, and suddenly-
WAAAH-WAAAHH-WAAAHHH!
An obnoxiously loud electric guitar riff blasted through the room, shaking the furniture.
Sonia screamed as Manic doubled over laughing. Aleena covered her ears with a chuckle, while Sonic just grinned like an idiot.
“Okay, I’m not saying it was the right move,” Sonic said, “but that was kinda awesome.”
“SEE? SONIC GETS IT!” Manic cheered.
Sonia groaned. “Ugh, why did I miss you again?”
That evening, Aleena had prepared a feast – roast vegetables, steaming fresh bread, and...
“CHILI DOGS! YES!” Sonic pumped his fist.
Aleena smiled. “Of course, dear. I know my children’s favorites.”
The family sat around the table, eating, laughing, and catching up. Sonia talked about her latest concert, Manic bragged about a totally-not-illegal treasure-hunting gig, and Sonic shared stories about his latest battles – including Eggman’s recent redemption.
“Seriously, he’s changed for the better!” Sonic exclaimed, “He even helped us stop a threat that would have wiped out all of Mobius!”
“I heard about that,” Aleena recalled, “Wasn’t Westopolis annihilated by that ‘Dark Star’ entity?”
“AND YOU DIDN’T BOTHER TO INVITE US TO THE BATTLE?!” Sonia shouted in jealousy.
Sonic shrugged. “Hey, things were dire – none of us were thinking clearly. When the entire world is at risk, you tend to forget stuff worse than a stoned Manic.”
“HEY, YOU TAKE THAT BACK!” Manic retorted. Sonia could only laugh at Sonic’s roast at Manic’s expense – heck, even Aleena had to stifle a laugh.
“Manic’s antics aside, it’s good to hear you’re still out there saving the world after all these years.”
Sonic smirked. “Well, some things never change.”
For the first time in forever, Sonic felt something he hadn’t realized he was missing: peace.
Not the kind of peace that came after saving the world.
But the kind that came from being home.
After dinner, the siblings went outside, lying on the grass and staring up at the stars.
“This is nice,” Sonia admitted, tucking her hands behind her head.
Manic nodded. “Yeah, y’know… we should do this more often.”
Sonic grinned. “Hey, I’m always down. But you guys are the ones who gotta stop breaking keyboards and almost getting arrested.”
“No promises,” Manic smirked.
Queen Aleena stood at the doorway, watching them with a soft smile. The hedgehogs she once had to hide away had finally come home.
And for tonight, at least, everything was perfect.
