Work Text:

Black Forest Cookie had promised few things in her life. Still, somehow, it was a promise that had started all this.

She first promised her soul to Them, when she was just a small crumb of dough. She had felt them, in prayer. Young Black Forest was a naive thing, a little girl who only knew how to question, even doubting Their all-encompassing presence. Then she suddenly felt Them. In the middle of prayer, Reverend Mother Cookie standing beside her, inscrutably smiling as she always did, while Black Forest was washed with Their divine blessing.

“Child, do you finally see everything I've always told you about?”

“...YES! YES, REVEREND MOTHER…!

She became a beautiful Cake Bride, reflecting her one and only dream from then on— the most sacred union between her and Them, her ideal wedding to her creator, who had shown her such love that she would be nothing but a measly crumb without.

“Embrace your fate. Embrace your fate. Embrace your fate…”

“I SWEAR… TO ALWAYS BE DEVOTED, TO NEVER FALL IN MY FAITH…”

Her next promise was always made in her dreams. “I swear to love and adore and devote myself to You, even beyond the day I crumble away into nothing…” Lovestruck, she would stand at the darkened altar, illuminated by moonlight, a setup so beautifully similar to that ritual from back then, as she promised her heart to Their silhouette. She had never seen Them, of course she hadn't! It would be preposterous to say that a mere little thing like her could ever hope to gaze upon Their noble visage. Yet she had always imagined that on that day, perhaps they would bare her a sliver of their face, a glance of their bright eyes, maybe even allow her to touch their soft skin…

Oh, Black Forest dreamt. She dreamt of that wedding, so many times… Sewed herself a makeshift wedding gown, and though not as elaborate as those she'd seen on her occasional excursions out for the Order, it was enough for her. She crafted herself a bouquet, and it was a simple thing, but it made her so happy in anticipation of the actual bouquet that might rest within her hands on her grand day. Her hands hurt while sewing and she couldn't quite get the hang of tying the bouquet together, but it almost made her feel like They were right by her side, preparing for the wedding with her. And that was enough.

Then, whispers of the Grand Mariage salon started around the Order.

“Wedding Cake Cookie really is perfect at this wedding planning business!”

“She is, isn't she? I couldn't have envisioned the ceremony better!”

“Look at the gown she designed! Isn't it perfect?”

“I can already see us under that altar! Together…”

Black Forest Cookie couldn't help but be curious. Could Grand Mariage actually bring her long-held dream to life? A beautiful wedding, in the dark of night, moonlight brightening the aisle, the guests in awe as they watched her sacred union with Them… Just like the Order’s rituals, the one Reverend Mother Cookie had done for her the day right before she felt Them…

Naturally, she snuck out. There was no way she could let such an opportunity slip through her hands.

And that brought her to her third promise.

“We… will meet again, Wedding Cake Cookie! I promise!”

Of course the Order had to take her away when she transformed. They couldn't risk letting outsiders know, and there was already a knight there. Still, Black Forest Cookie wanted to stay a little longer, to bask in Their radiance, the radiance Wedding Cake Cookie in all her enthusiasm had managed to procure a small shard of just for Black Forest…

But the Order led her away, and then there was nothing. She knew they didn't mean badly. It was all for her, and the Order’s, safety.

Still, hiding in the alleys as Creme Knights ran by, Black Forest couldn't help but ask for the first time since she was a little child— “Why?”

“Why what?” The black-masked Order member sounded stern and exhausted, certainly not in the mood for strange questions.

But…! Black Forest Cookie had to know.

“Why can't we let them know about… me? Is this not the blessed form They have gifted me with? I want to… show it to everyone with pride!”

I want to show it to Wedding Cake Cookie, who allowed me to have this moment, to transform on the altar as I was about to swear my undying love… who allowed me to have the time of my life…

“Because we can't.” The Order member’s voice was flat. “Don't be stupid, Black Forest Cookie. I know that of us all your faith is strongest, but don't ask questions that will get us caught. You can go ask Reverend Mother back in the Order, but not here, not now.”

Another wave of Creme Knights rushed by, like they were emphasising the Order member’s point.

Black Forest wasn't dumb. She piped down, keeping her burning questions for her Reverend Mother, who surely knew everything. Who showed her Them, once, just like Wedding Cake Cookie had.

Quietly, they got away from the eyes of the Republic.

“Black Forest Cookie… I’m sure I don't need to tell you what you've done.”

“...Yes, Reverend Mother…”

“Come with me to prayer, child. We will apologise to Them together.”

“But! B, but, Reverend Mother, what are we apologising for? I was having the happiest time of my life, Reverend Mother, that was all! You've always said my happiness is Their happiness, so…”

“You're the most passionate bride I've ever met in my career! Whoever they are, they're lucky to have you!”

“You…!” For a second, something seemed to overtake Reverend Mother Cookie, a burst of… was that fury? Black Forest Cookie was stunned. But the Reverend Mother quickly regained her composure. “You ask foolish questions, child. Remember what you said on that day?”

“I swear to always be devoted… To never fall in my faith…”

“Child, you know what I've told you about such promises, don't you?”

“Break them, and They will never gaze upon me ever again… I will only become a soggy piece of failed dough to Them…”

“That's right. So, come pray with me, Black Forest Cookie.”

Black Forest kept quiet. She hadn't really gotten any answers, in the end. But… this must definitely also be part of Their sacred plan. Surely. It was all a trial, to see if Black Forest Cookie was worthy of having her love returned. That must be what Reverend Mother Cookie was trying to communicate…

“Black Forest Cookie?”

“Ah! I- My apologies, Reverend Mother… Yes, let's pray…”

Black Forest Cookie snuck out again.

Of course she did. If she broke her promise to Wedding Cake Cookie…

“You are only a soggy piece of failed dough without Them. Break your oaths and your promises, and that's all you'll ever be.”

Perhaps Black Forest should have told Reverend Mother Cookie about her excursion. Obviously Reverend Mother wouldn't be mad if she was just fulfilling a simple promise. It had been a whole week since the incident! But that brief show of anger last time…

…It scared Black Forest. She never wanted to anger Reverend Mother Cookie ever again. Because the Reverend Mother was the one who had shown her Them in the first place, who had kept her fed, gave her shelter, watched her well, made sure she got in as little trouble as possible, taught her and raised her. It would be ungrateful to actively displease her, even if Black Forest Cookie had her own reasons.

So she snuck out. Without anyone knowing. In the first light of the morning, when no one would be awake.

Black Forest was dizzy, and the streets were dark. She could barely see anything. Right… She’d skipped her dinner and sleep for prayer with the Reverend Mother, and hadn't had breakfast.

This was bad.

She mumbled a small prayer to Them. For a clear head, a good sight of her goal. For her legs to keep going until she could see that familiar salon again…

But there was no salon in sight. They didn't respond— They wanted Black Forest Cookie to conquer this herself, perhaps. Maybe she could have in another time, showing Them her best side, but she was so giddy, so tired, so hungry…

She still stood tall, though. She had to keep going, at least… show Them she was trying her very best…

“Black Forest Cookie?”

That sounded like Wedding Cake Cookie. But it was dark, and all Black Forest could see was her silhouette.

“Black Forest Cookie, what're you doing out here at this time? Have you eaten? Or do you have a specific diet? And you don't look like you've slept… Hmm. Let's see, my experience is telling me that… You should come with me, Black Forest Cookie.”

“Huhu… I didn't break my promise…”

Black Forest couldn't help it. She was starving and fatigued, and she leaned into Wedding Cake, a blissful smile on her face.

“They must have led you here… I knew it… They love me, and I love Them…”

“Your partner? Are they here? Oh, I'd love to meet them!” Wedding Cake sounded just as excited as Black Forest. It made her so happy, having someone who understood…

“...? Black Forest Cookie! Wait, how long haven't you slept? Hey!”

It was a different dream this time. Black Forest Cookie was dimly aware of that.

She was walking down the moonlit aisle in a grand gown at first, like in all her past dreams. However, there was someone behind her this time, a cookie with pink hair in a gorgeous updo. When the cookie saw Black Forest turn back, she smiled gently.

“I know it's your big day, but don't be nervous. It'll be alright. You're the most passionate bride I've ever met in my career, after all. They're lucky to have met you.”

That sounded familiar.

Black Forest was confused. She dropped something.

The cookie only giggled, providing no answers. “I already said, don't be nervous! Take your bouquet with you.” She pushed Black Forest Cookie forward slightly. “Come on. It's your dream wedding, isn't it?”

“Yes! But…”

But something was wrong. Black Forest Cookie turned ahead. There was no one at the altar. Not even a shadow, a vague shape, nothing.

The moonlight was fading. Darkness engulfed the area. Only she and the other cookie were alone in the darkness.

A voice rang in her head, but it wasn't the other cookie’s.

“You are only a soggy piece of failed dough without Them. Break your oaths and your promises, and that's all you'll ever be.”

Her promise…! But what was it? She could only dimly remember…

“I… swear to…”

The other cookie laughed. Her laugh really was so pretty, a warm, reassuring sound…

“Black Forest Cookie, remember! We will meet again.

Yes. How could she forget?

“We… will meet again, Wedding Cake Cookie! I promise!”

Wedding Cake Cookie had a bright smile, a sweet thing that almost seemed like edible sunlight, as she held onto Black Forest Cookie’s hands. “That's right! You're doing great, Black Forest Cookie… You can remember everything you're supposed to say!”

“Come on. I know you can do it!”

Black Forest Cookie gasped. She was sitting in a warm bed. Her hands were warm. Someone else was holding them.

“You did it!” It was her turn to be enveloped in a hug now, a warm thing that smelled of sweet meringues and rose syrup. Wedding Cake Cookie’s hairdo was out of place, her dress was melting somewhat, but she sounded so very relieved, and she was there. That was good. Black Forest didn't break her promise.

“Yes… Thank you…”

But this wasn't the salon.

“It's such a disappointment though, that I couldn't meet your lover… I wanted to see what kind of person could catch your eye like that…” Wedding Cake Cookie sighed as she leaned back into the chair she'd been sitting in. “Still, it's wonderful you're awake. Though for your lover to have left while you were in that state, isn't that rather…?”

“T- They're perfect! They love me, I know! This was just one of their trials for me…” Black Forest Cookie knew how easy it was for nonbelievers to get such ideas. Nonetheless, she had to enlighten them. “Their love and grace has made me who I am today…!”

“If you really believe that, then it's fine. Sorry about that. I believe you.” Wedding Cake Cookie smiled, rubbing Black Forest’s hands. “Right, you fainted this morning, so I brought you to the clinic. This is Pure Vanilla Cookie, he was the one who handled everything.”

Black Forest Cookie raised her eyes to see a cookie with a waffle hat and closed eyes, a flower staff with a contrasting open eye in his hand. He smiled at her, a serene smile that made her feel at peace.

“...Thank you… May They bless you…”

Black Forest bowed her own head in gratitude, missing the slight frown Pure Vanilla had at her words.

“...You're a good child. You should take care of yourself. Sleep at the proper times, and eat well.”

“I will…!”

Despite all that, Wedding Cake Cookie still looked a bit worried. “Well, we should get you home. Black Forest Cookie, where do you live?”

“The M– No, I…” Black Forest trailed off. She wasn't supposed to be revealing Order secrets. And Reverend Mother Cookie was probably already furious with her for leaving again without telling anyone.

Black Forest Cookie hadn't even been to the clinic before, so she didn't know the way back to the Monastery anyway. And… She didn't want to go back and face the Reverend Mother's wrath. She was already terrified just imagining it.

Wedding Cake Cookie must have picked up on that, because she didn't even comment on Black Forest's non-answer. Just patted her hand and said, “It's fine if you can't go back. You can come to the salon with me. I can take care of you for the time being.”

“That's, that's fine by me…! Thank you…” Before Black Forest knew it, she'd agreed. An overwhelming sense of relief overcame her, even as she gave such a blasphemous reply.

…She was done for if she ever went back. And They…

But isn't your happiness Their happiness too? A little voice in her heart asked. A naive, childish voice, used to asking questions. A voice Black Forest Cookie didn't think she'd hear again.

Still, it was right. Wasn't that what Reverend Mother Cookie had always told her? “You may feel at peace with your heart in Their hands, child. Your joy is Their joy. Your sorrow is Their sorrow. So devote yourself to them, your heart lightened…”

They must have guided her here, indeed. To fulfil her promise, fulfil it well, and find that joy she had felt in that rehearsal… Yes, They must have planned everything for her with her joy in mind… They truly were the perfect lover.

Yes, this was fine. Because there's no way They would oppose something like this.

The Grand Mariage salon was as cheerful and bright as Black Forest Cookie last remembered. It was filled with elegant dresses like before, though it seemed the display had changed somewhat, and batches of florals in the corner still bloomed beautifully.

Black Forest Cookie found her eyes drawn to every side of the room, all filled with possibilities in any sort of wedding. In Black Forest's personal ideal, perhaps that splendid black gown… Or that batch of gorgeous maroon orchids… Or…

Yet Wedding Cake Cookie only tilted her head at the room.

“Hmm. I don't think I've got anything to work on lately… Wonderful! Come with me, Black Forest Cookie!”

She clicked off the lights without so much as a second thought. For some reason, that made Black Forest slightly melancholy. Even though she'd always dreamed of her wedding in the dark…

“Come, Black Forest Cookie! You don't need to be nervous! Come on up!”

Wedding Cake Cookie’s voice rang out, like a sliver of moonlight in the darkness, guiding her forward. Black Forest Cookie rushed to follow her, the pair ascending a flight of stairs behind the shop to arrive into a small area, a simple couch and table in the middle. Large windows let the sunlight in, giving the room a warm, cosy feel.

Wedding Cake Cookie stepped in front of her, that bright sunny smile on her face. “This is my home! It's not much, but… You can stay here as long as you like! That's the kitchen, that's the bathroom, that's my bedroom, and there's a guest room, if you'd like to sleep there. This is the living room!” The pink-haired cookie stepped around and opened various doors, showing Black Forest everything inside.

“Though… I'd love if you could promise me something.”

Wedding Cake Cookie was still smiling, but her tone had changed.

“No matter what it is… If there's something troubling you, please tell me, alright? I'll do my best to help you out.”

But there's nothing troubling me, Black Forest thought. She could stay with Wedding Cake Cookie, and her sweet, rose syrup-flavoured smile, and she was happy, which meant They were happy too. Then she would go back to the Monastery, get chided by Reverend Mother Cookie, and then all would be fine.

Still, she promised. She couldn't explain why, but she wanted to. If it would put Wedding Cake Cookie at ease… Then this was the least she could possibly do as repayment for everything, wasn't it?

“Okay… I promise!”

Seeing Wedding Cake Cookie’s smile brighten up again, a strange happiness overcame Black Forest Cookie. Even though They hadn't done anything, and Black Forest Cookie had made promises before, this pure joy still came over her like a gentle wave, a warm lap of the tides at sunrise.

Maybe the presence of light was starting to grow on her.

Of course all good things don't last. That was a foolish sort of thought, something Black Forest Cookie was fairly certain she'd grown out of.

But maybe it was Wedding Cake Cookie’s steady presence around her, her unquenchable enthusiasm at work, her beautiful, sunlit smile— Black Forest wasn't sure, but somehow, she'd found herself believing this could almost last forever. Wedding Cake Cookie was unobtrusive, and rarely asked about her life, simply making her meals and providing her a house. Sometimes she'd ask Black Forest for help with work, or other times she'd bounce ideas off her. And so, so foolishly, Black Forest believed it could all last.

Foolish. So foolish.

A memory came back to her. A rainy day, young little Black Forest Cookie swinging her legs idly as she sat opposite Reverend Mother Cookie.

“Reverend Mother, if They really exist, why would They make it rain on the day of our picnic?”

“Because it was never meant to be.” Reverend Mother Cookie’s ever-inscrutable smile never left her face.

“But… Everyone was looking forward to it. Everyone! And now everyone's sad, because we can't go out. Why would They do this to us?”

“Child, watch your tongue. Are you saying They have done something wrong?”

“N- No! But…”

“I understand your doubts, Black Forest Cookie. Remember— With every rise, comes a fall. That's why you should always trust in Their plan, it's all for your own good. Do not be disappointed if you don't rise, because They are preventing a future fall… And if They allow you to rise, it's because they've prepared you appropriately for a fall. In Their plan, everything has been foreseen. So worry not. You can always trust in Them.”

“...O- Okay…”

With every rise comes a fall.

And then, there was Financier Cookie at Wedding Cake Cookie’s door, warning, “There's been a rise in Order-related incidents as of late, Wedding Cake Cookie. Please do be cautious. Most of them have occurred around this area, so extra vigilance is a must.”

“Understood, Financier Cookie… But do you know what brought this surge of incidents on?”

Financier sighed. “...We're…” Then she trailed off, rather uncharacteristically. “Wait, is this a new housemate?”

Black Forest Cookie peered from behind Wedding Cake Cookie. “Y- Yes! I'm…”

“You look… familiar…” Financier frowned, staring intently.

Wedding Cake Cookie laughed. “Really? She's only turned up recently. I'm lending her my home for the moment~ We'll both be careful, so don't worry! You take care of yourself too.”

That, thankfully, seemed enough to get Financier to stop probing. “I thank you, Wedding Cake Cookie. And… the dress last time was beautiful.”

With that, she left.

But Black Forest couldn't be at ease. Order-related incidents? In the area? It had to be related to her. What should she do? Return to the Order? She'd been gone too long, so that would be the right thing to do… Yes, definitely, but… The grand salon, the heartwarming little living room, Wedding Cake Cookie’s sunny smile…

“Hey? Black Forest Cookie?”

“...Ah!”

Wedding Cake Cookie was staring at her, concerned. Even with her face creased in worry, she still seemed to radiate a sunlike glow, and Black Forest was momentarily stunned.

“Mm, sorry. I…”

“You look troubled. If there's anything, you should tell me. Remember our promise…” Wedding Cake’s tone was sincere. It warmed Black Forest up, so unlike Reverend Mother Cookie’s cold reminders.

“You are only a soggy piece of failed dough without Them. Break your oaths and your promises, and that's all you'll ever be.”

That could never happen. Black Forest couldn't bear the thought of it. She needed Them. Of course she had to confess… She should have long ago…

“I…! I, I have to… go back… Because… all these incidents… They're happening because…”

They’re happening because of me.

“No.” Wedding Cake Cookie folded her arms.

“Eh?”

“I told you I wished you nothing but happiness, didn't I?”

“Yes, but…”

“You don't look very happy to go back.”

“...R- Really?”

A sigh. “Black Forest Cookie, you look terrified.”

“I do…?”

Yes, you do! Because you know, Black Forest Cookie. You know that a mere scolding is not the only thing waiting for you back at the Order. You know well the kinds of things the Order gets up to. You've always known that They won't always protect you. Especially against the Order.

That childish voice, but it was menacing, ominous, not quite as naive as it had seemed before. Like it knew. It had always known.

Black Forest Cookie had always known.

Still, “I’m- I'm sure They will help me! Because I love them, and They… They love me…”

But she couldn't sound as secure as she wanted to.

Wedding Cake Cookie had noticed. Of course she had. She softened her tone, gently holding onto one of Black Forest’s hands.

“...Do you know what love is, Black Forest Cookie?” The question was kind, as though telling Black Forest that there was no right answer, she didn't need to worry about getting it wrong.

“Undying devotion, unbreakable faith, unwavering trust…”

Is that really all? The voice within her asked, almost mocking. Is that what you know? Or what Reverend Mother Cookie has told you?

“That's right, child. You might have forgotten all the core values of our Order, but at least you remember that.” A cold, edged voice.

Reverend Mother Cookie.

Black Forest Cookie felt a chill crawl down her spine. She turned around, almost mechanically.

“R- Reverend Mother…”

Reverend Mother Cookie was incandescent. An ominous aura seemed to roll off of her in waves, and her usually ever-present smile was twitching. “Black Forest Cookie… It would be best if you returned home now. Let go of that other cookie, if you would. They have been calling for your return.”

“...You're the Order, aren't you?” Wedding Cake Cookie stepped in front of Black Forest as she was about to go towards Reverend Mother Cookie. She never let go of Black Forest’s hand, her grip a warm, reassuring thing.

“What of it? You won't be alive to tell the Creme Knights anyway.”

That shook Black Forest Cookie to the core. “R- Reverend Mother! You can't!”

The older cookie sent her a piercing glare. “Do not talk to me about what I can or cannot do, Black Forest Cookie. You have rebelled against the Order, disregarded Them, put your kin in danger… The list continues. I have tried to be lenient, because I know you are truly devoted, but you have been pushing it quite a bit. Look at you, still hiding behind another instead of taking accountability.”

Pure, unadulterated rage was something Black Forest wasn't used to, especially from Reverend Mother Cookie. She shrunk back unconsciously, something that didn't go unnoticed by Wedding Cake Cookie.

“You're scaring her.”

“The least she deserves.”

“She's part of the Order, isn't she? So you, the Reverend Mother, must have raised her. But this doesn't seem like the behaviour of a mother to me.”

“Then you must have been raised wrong, child.” Reverend Mother Cookie’s smile was completely gone. “No matter. I’m not here to argue with a cookie who doesn't know a single thing of our grand Order. Come out, everyone… we’re taking Black Forest Cookie home. And we can finish that other cookie off, too.”

An expectant pause.

And then Financier Cookie stepped out, a bundle of Order members tied together at her feet. She stared at Reverend Mother Cookie. “Are these the minions you were calling for? My apologies. They are… preoccupied.”

From the cracks of buildings Creme Knights stepped out, all with their own group of incapacitated Order members.

Black Forest gasped. “They…! M- Miss Financier Cookie, they…”

“We won't hurt them any more. Than necessary.” Financier Cookie’s tone was stern, but there was a quiet undertone of reassurance.

Black Forest knew she was reliable, but still… That was the Order. Her family…

Wedding Cake Cookie seemed to have caught into her unease, squeezing her hand. “Please, trust Financier. She knows what she's doing. Okay?”

“...Okay. Yes.” Black Forest nodded.

Reverend Mother Cookie hissed. “Really? You're betraying us, Black Forest Cookie? You? You, who would be nothing without me?”

“...!”

“They don't care about you, Black Forest Cookie. Not anymore. You've turned your back on the Order, and Them too. You're a failure.”

Smoke engulfed the area, blurring everything in sight.

“Is this what you wanted? Congratulations, Black Forest Cookie! You've gotten away from me! Yet you'll never feel Their gaze ever again! Congratulations!”

Reverend Mother Cookie had vanished in the chaos.

“Ugh-!” Financier sounded frustrated. “Again. She got away.” Then, a sigh, exhausted and defeated. “...Well, we couldn't have captured so many without your tip, Wedding Cake Cookie. You have my gratitude.”

“Of course! You're welcome. But… if it's possible, could Black Forest Cookie continue staying here?”

Black Forest blinked at the mention of her name. “M- Me?”

At that, Financier Cookie looked conflicted. “...I… shall have to submit my report first. However, I see no reason why she might not be able to…”

“Thank you!”

“...Ehm. What's going to… happen to the rest of the Order?” Black Forest’s voice was soft.

Financier stared at her intently. Then, seeming to have judged something and been satisfied, she eased up. “They'll probably be put in prison. All this can be considered terrorism, after all.”

“...Yes… I know… Um, you really won't hurt them any more, right…?”

“Yes. There's no longer any need for it, provided they behave themselves.”

“C- Can you promise that?”

Financier stared at her, seemingly at a loss. “That's…”

Black Forest Cookie’s eyes were wide, pleading. No matter what they did, the Order… She'd been raised among them, as one of their own. They had taught her everything she knew now.

Wedding Cake Cookie shot Financier a look, and the other cookie coughed. “...Alright. Ahem, I promise.”

Black Forest Cookie couldn't help but break into a smile, relieved. “Thank you! Thank you so much…”

“Ahem. Of course. I shall take my leave now… Once again, my gratitude.”

With a gentlemanly bow, Financier Cookie gathered the Creme Knights then departed.

Black Forest Cookie and Wedding Cake Cookie watched her leave, still hand in hand.

“...How… did you know?” Black Forest stared at Wedding Cake. “I… didn't tell you. I broke… my promise. I…”

“So what?” Wedding Cake laughed, the sunset painting her peach. “You're so silly, Black Forest Cookie. It's fine. Everything's fine now, isn't it?”

“But… you knew all along and…”

“Yes, I never pried. Because if you were ready to tell me, you would.” Wedding Cake Cookie smiled. “I knew. During the rehearsal, it'd already be hard to not guess that the Order was involved. Then you came back, and you kept mentioning ‘them’... Yet I never caught sight of them, not once. ‘They’ never came, not when you fainted on the streets, starving, not in the time you were staying here, not even a crumb of communication came through. No one ever called asking for Black Forest Cookie. You can say it was love for you, but… do you know this love was hurting you too?”

Her smile was fading. She looked sad, but Black Forest couldn't understand why. Wedding Cake Cookie wasn't even talking about herself, so why would she be sad about something that didn't happen to her?

“I thought anyone who was your lover must be extremely lucky. You're cute, kind, enthusiastic, anything I- anyone would ever want in a partner. But you, you were unlucky.”

Wedding Cake Cookie gripped Black Forest Cookie’s hand even tighter. “They… They're your god, aren't they? Something that can't be seen, can't be communicated with… That's what Pure Vanilla told me.”

“I… They… Yes, they can't communicate with us, because They're so far above, yes, yes, but They- They aren't bad. They've only ever had my best interests at heart…! Their grand plan, everything, it's all for us!”

Black Forest Cookie had to defend Them, almost on instinct.

Wedding Cake Cookie only looked more and more sad. It hurt Black Forest. She didn't know why.

“...Reverend Mother Cookie told you all that, didn't she?”

“…Yes, but Reverend Mother Cookie couldn't have been wrong about this…! Because, she was the one who raised me! She took care of me, and gave me everything, and if, if that's wrong, then everything else I know…! It would all be…!”

Black Forest Cookie was only dimly aware of how desperate she sounded. Reverend Mother Cookie hadn't been good, but she wouldn't lie to Black Forest Cookie. Not about this. She couldn't have, because so many times, when Black Forest Cookie asked her many, many questions, Reverend Mother Cookie would always respond, still smiling, reminding her of Their grand plan, that They had planned everything for everyone, it was all for their own good, nothing bad could come of trusting Them…

Everything Black Forest Cookie knew, came from Reverend Mother Cookie and her inscrutable smile. To say it was all wrong…

She was confused. Her head was spinning. Her vision blurred.

She sunk to the ground. It couldn't all be wrong. No. Even if it was Wedding Cake Cookie saying this, it couldn't…

“Black Forest Cookie. Do you think Reverend Mother Cookie loved you?”

Love.

That word.

Undying devotion, unbreakable faith, unwavering trust…

“But Reverend Mother Cookie, do They love us?”

“Child, what are you saying?”

“You always say They have a plan for us. Everything, it's all part of Their sacred plan, for us to carry out, so that we may reap the results. But that's not trust, not faith, not devotion! They don't trust us to know what to do next, or have faith we can make it, so they must plan for everything in our way… They don't devote Themselves to the us of right now, only what lies in the future! So do they really love us?”

Black Forest Cookie honestly envied the young her, so convinced of her own ideas, nothing like the mess of tears and bafflement she currently was.

“Child, what are you saying? That They don't love us?”

“...No! Of course not… But what really is love, then, Reverend Mother?”

“Haah. If you'd like to know so much… Then join me in the ritual tonight, Black Forest Cookie. It will… enlighten you.”

“Really?”

“Yes. Simply remember— Embrace your fate.”

“She… She must have… I hope…”

Wedding Cake Cookie stared, long and hard, as if she was trying to see into Black Forest Cookie, see deep into everything that made her her.

“...I see.”

Somehow, that didn't seem like a complete response.

“Then, W- Wedding Cake Cookie, what… what do you think is love?”

A pause. Wedding Cake Cookie tilted her head, seeming to think.

“Do you know why I like weddings?” Was what she finally asked.

“...No…”

“Because that's the moment everyone calls the best day of their lives. A beautiful connection was made in the world, a connection so beautiful it was necessary to hold a ceremony for it. I wanted to be the one who could make every ceremony worthy of celebrating every single beautiful connection. A connection that lights up your whole world, that fills that hole you never realised was there, that makes you think that ‘oh, they are the one I will stay with forever, and who would stay with me forever in turn’, I think that's what love is.”

She paused for a moment.

“But love is a different thing for everyone. You don't need to take my definition as the standard— find your own answer to your own questions, Black Forest Cookie. I'll help you out anytime you like, okay?”

Wedding Cake Cookie was smiling again now, soft and tender, a sugary wonder that made Black Forest Cookie melt a little bit.

“Black Forest Cookie, why don't we make another promise, to celebrate our connection?”

“Another…?”

“Yes! Let's see… A traditional, formal one shall do. Repeat after me, won't you, Black Forest Cookie?”

How could she say no Wedding Cake Cookie, who had done so much for her, who had that warm, sweet smile on her face?

“Okay…”

“I, now say your name. I, Wedding Cake Cookie…”

“I, Black Forest Cookie…”

“...Promise to stay with you forevermore…”

“...mm… Promise to stay with you forevermore…”

“...For better or for worse, in sickness and in health…”

“...For better or for worse, in sickness and in health…

“...To cherish you always, until Death do us part.”

“...To cherish you always… until Death do us part… Such a long promise…”

Laughter from Wedding Cake Cookie. “Of course! Then our bond together will last for a long time, won't it?”

“Yes…! Yes, that would be perfect…!”

In the gleam of the setting sun, two cookies with their hands interlocked laughed together, a beautiful bond made in midnight blossoming into a beautiful flower under the sunset.

After that, a great many things changed for Black Forest Cookie.

She stayed with Wedding Cake Cookie now, helped out at Grand Mariage, went out without worry, lived and laughed and had fun every day. Her dreams changed setting from midnights with silhouettes to sunset with rose syrup meringue, and her life moved from the dull Monastery to the warm Grand Mariage.

It was so, so different from life in the Order.

…Black Forest Cookie loved this life much more.

On a particular day, a pair entered Grand Mariage. Black Forest Cookie recognised one of them, Pure Vanilla Cookie, the close-eyed healer with the open-eyed staff.

The other one was blue, unfamiliar, and seemed quite unhappy to be here.

Wedding Cake Cookie rushed up to them, experienced at the business. “Welcome to Grand Mariage! What can I do for you today?”

Pure Vanilla smiled. “My apologies for the appearance. We aren't looking for a wedding, but merely… to see how you two were doing.”

Wedding Cake Cookie seemed momentarily surprised, but quickly regained her professionalism. “Ah! You helped us out quite a lot, so thank you!”

Black Forest Cookie nodded along to Wedding Cake Cookie’s words. “Y, yes, thank you…!”

Pure Vanilla Cookie waved it all off. “No need to thank me… I merely did what I could. Black Forest Cookie, how are you now?”

“I’m, I'm fine… Um, the Order won't be around anymore, Financier Cookie said… So that's good… And Wedding Cake Cookie has been treating me well…” Black Forest Cookie, stunned at having been mentioned by name, stammered through an answer.

The blue cookie nudged Pure Vanilla, an expression of skepticism on his face. “Hey. What did you do? She sounds terrified. How's this supposed to be my lesson in ‘making friends’? Is this all your brand of Deceit, or what?”

Pure Vanilla only laughed off his clearly unimpressed friend. “Come on. I think you two would get along well. Black Forest Cookie, this is Shadow Milk Cookie.”

“Why'd you give her my name? Tsk…”

“That's how making friends begins, Shadow Milk Cookie.”

Despite the exaggerated show of rolling his eyes, Shadow Milk Cookie still stepped forth. “...This is a whole lot of trouble. Ahem. Hello.”

Black Forest Cookie shrunk back behind Wedding Cake Cookie, who had a wry smile on her face as she watched the exchange. “Um. H, hello…”

An awkward silence as they stared at each other.

Wedding Cake started giggling at the two, both with clearly zero social experience.

“Hey, she's laughing at me, isn't she?” Shadow Milk turned back accusingly at Pure Vanilla. “Was this your plan all along? Just to humiliate me? I didn't expect such a petty ploy from you, Pure Vanilla. Wonderful use of Deceit! Wonderful!”

Pure Vanilla really didn't seem bothered at all by the slander being thrown his way. In fact, he looked a little amused. “You're doing great, Shadow Milk. I know you can do this.”

While the two bickered, or more like Shadow Milk Cookie bickered and Pure Vanilla gave bemused responses, Wedding Cake Cookie pushed Black Forest Cookie forward slightly, towards where Shadow Milk stood. “Come on. I know you can do it, Black Forest Cookie. I'm right here.”

“I- I'll try…” Black Forest Cookie took a shaky step forward. “Uhm, Shadow Milk… Right?”

“...Yes. What, need a repeat? You'll never stay in business like that.”

“I… really like your eyes…” Black Forest didn't let herself be deterred by his jagged words, glancing back at Wedding Cake Cookie for reassurance, and was met with an approving nod. “Th- the colours, they're really beautiful…”

A pause. A scary pause, where Shadow Milk only stared at her, saying nothing.

“...Pure Vanilla Cookie, we leave. Now.”

He turned his face away from where Black Forest Cookie could see it.

Her courage all but spent, she immediately stepped back behind Wedding Cake Cookie.

“Oh no… The greatest actor in Earthbread, Shadow Milk Cookie, is he… flustered?” Pure Vanilla Cookie tittered about Shadow Milk Cookie, nothing like the calm, serene impression Black Forest Cookie had of him. To Black Forest Cookie, he smiled cheerfully. “Compliment him more. He likes it.”

Black Forest Cookie stepped back even more, nervous.

“We’re leaving. Now.”

“Oh… But look what you've done, she looks terrified… After she left the Order too… Oh no, what have you done, Shadow Milk? Well, I guess we'll leave…”

Something seemed to change in Shadow Milk Cookie. “Wait. The Order? Those lunatics? You didn't tell me this.”

“I did. You just didn't listen.” Still, Pure Vanilla Cookie seemed to be enjoying this.

“You…” A sigh. But Shadow Milk turned around, approaching Black Forest slowly. Somehow, she could sense his demeanour had changed. She took a small step forward to match.

“You… don't yet know the whole Truth, do you?”

“......”

Black Forest Cookie looked away. Shadow Milk’s mismatched eyes seemed to hold something, a deep disillusion. He knew Them. But he didn't believe.

She couldn't meet those eyes.

He patted her head, somewhat awkwardly. “...You're different from me,” was all he said in the end.

It didn't feel like an insult.

“So, when's the wedding, then~?” A familiar voice got both of their attention. It was Wedding Cake Cookie, giggling at Pure Vanilla Cookie. The other two, already fairly close, seemed to be having a good time with their conversation.

“Hahaha… We're just friends, Wedding Cake Cookie.”

Shadow Milk Cookie stiffened at that.

“Alright. Time for us to go. Goodbye to you both.” Tone flat, he pulled Pure Vanilla out of the salon.

“Oh my…” Wedding Cake Cookie and Black Forest Cookie were left alone as the door slammed behind the pair.

“So… how was he?” Wedding Cake Cookie turned to Black Forest, eyes shining excitedly.

“Uhm… He's not… Bad.”

You're different from me.

Impulsively, Black Forest Cookie wanted to talk to him again. To find out what he knew, what had brought him to this moment.

“I want to talk to him again.” She voiced the thought out loud for Wedding Cake.

“See! Just like that, you can get to know everyone in the kingdom!” Wedding Cake looked excited. “This can be your home, Black Forest Cookie!”

Home.

A warm, welcoming word. A word that reminded Black Forest Cookie of rose syrup, pink hair, pale dough, elegant dresses and beautiful florals, weddings and promises.

“...I like… the sound of that…”

In the ongoing effort to improve Black Forest Cookie’s social skills, Wedding Cake Cookie came up with the wonderful idea to let her greet the salon clients.

“It'll be fun, don't you think?”

“I’m… probably not going to be good at it…”

“That's alright! Just try your best!”

“Good morning!”

“Good morning…! What can I do for you today…?”

Behind Black Forest Cookie, Wedding Cake Cookie nodded proudly. Her impulse protégé was doing so well.

Linzer Cookie tilted her head at the surroundings, then at the cookie in front of her. “You’re new!”

A beat of silence. Wedding Cake Cookie was watching excitedly to see how her student might handle this.

“Uhm. Yes.”

Another beat of silence. Linzer Cookie glanced behind Black Forest Cookie, catching Wedding Cake Cookie’s eye. The other cookie only winked in response. Help her out here.

“Okay, I can work with that. It's nice to meet you, I'm Linzer Cookie.”

“I'm… Black Forest Cookie.”

“Alright! Black Forest Cookie, is it possible to make a… Hmm, a white gown, ankle-length, with yellow accents. A musical sort of motif would be wonderful too… But everything else can be up to artistic liberty!”

Linzer’s eyes shined as she asked. Unsure, and slightly overwhelmed, Black Forest Cookie turned back again to a grin and a thumbs-up from Wedding Cake Cookie.

“Of- Of course…! Um, my partner can… take care of it… You can come back in…”

Another nervous turn back. Wedding Cake Cookie tapped her foot seven times, nodding encouragingly.

“Y- You can come back in… seven days…! Th- Thank you very much…!”

Linzer nodded enthusiastically, like a model customer. “Yes, wonderful. This salon can be featured in my next work, as thanks. I promise to get you two a free copy.” She winked as she opened the door, her skirt twirling as she exited.

“So cool…” Black Forest Cookie found herself enamoured by Linzer’s candid attitude.

Wedding Cake Cookie jumped at her from behind. “You did great! That was amazing for your first time, Black Forest Cookie! You'll be a professional in no time at all!”

That made Black Forest Cookie very happy.

But she still had a question.

“...Just now, the dress she requested didn't seem to fit her very much…”

Wedding Cake Cookie seemed to sparkle at that. “Yes, it didn't, did it? It was probably for someone else, who Linzer wants to have her dream wedding with, don't you think? She'll probably be back soon~”

The thought of planning a wedding made Wedding Cake Cookie look all the more radiant, like she was her own sun. It was truly captivating to Black Forest Cookie.

“Then, Wedding Cake Cookie… What's… your dream wedding?”

“My dream wedding?” Though Wedding Cake Cookie’s smile grew wider, the light around her seemed to dim. “Why would you want to know that?”

“Because…” Black Forest Cookie was momentarily at a loss, taken aback by the change in Wedding Cake Cookie’s demeanour. “Because, mm… I want to know more about… you?”

The innocent response elicited a giggle from Wedding Cake Cookie. “You already know loads about me.”

“...Do I…?”

“Ooh, why don't you list everything you know about me? That would be fun!”

“Um…” Black Forest Cookie paused, thinking hard. “I know… you're warm, and sweet, and you always smell like rose syrup… Mm… You wake up at six every day, but sleep at one, and you live right above the salon you work in… You're a professional who has pulled off every single wedding request you've received… You like weddings because of… the bond they signify. When you smile, it's like sunlight… You're very cool at work, but also… very cute… And you promised, to stay with me forevermore, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, to cherish this connection we have until Death do us part…”

“Cough! Hack! Khm!” For some reason, Wedding Cake Cookie broke out into violent coughs. “Ahem, ahem! See, you already know so much about me! Something like my dream wedding… You might as well already know it!”

“Huh…? Is that allowed…?” Black Forest Cookie stared blankly.

“Surely, so…! Hmm, let's see, what's your dream wedding, Black Forest Cookie?” For some reason, Wedding Cake Cookie was blushing. She looked like a rose that had just begun unfurling its petals.

“You asked me that before…”

“I asked you that before all this…” Wedding Cake moved her hand about, highlighting them, sitting on the floor of Grand Mariage, talking about unimportant things. “So has it changed?”

“Um…”

“Oh, I have a wonderful idea! We could recreate your dream marriage now, since the last one… Well, you know what happened...”

“...! That would be… nice…”

“Alright! Let's see… Tell me, Black Forest Cookie, what's your dream wedding like?” Adopting a playfully professional attitude, mimicking herself from when they first met, Wedding Cake Cookie pulled Black Forest to her feet and stood in front of her with that beautiful smile.

“Hmm… sunset.”

“Oh my! A change in timing! Keep going…”

“And… a light pink dress… And the bouquet… Pink and white roses…”

“I see the vision! Going for a more classic look now, are we?”

“And… the venue… At home.”

“Ooh, still slightly unconventional! Very well, I can make it happen!”

Wedding Cake Cookie thought hard. “It's still the morning, so we have all the way until the evening to prepare… Wonderful, wonderful… And the dress, I'm sure I have something like that lying around… But for Black Forest Cookie… That would be… I could assemble a bouquet without too long… A trip to Herb then…”

Watching Wedding Cake Cookie monologue to herself, Black Forest Cookie had to break into smile.

A dream wedding.

This whole life already felt like a dream, so distant from her past. A dream wedding… She wondered who she might be wedded to, now…

“You're the most passionate bride I've ever met in my career! Whoever they are, they're lucky to have you!”

“Black Forest Cookie, what're you doing out here at this time? Have you eaten? Or do you have a specific diet? And you don't look like you've slept… Hmm. Let's see, my experience is telling me that… You should come with me, Black Forest Cookie.”

“No matter what it is… If there's something troubling you, please tell me, alright? I'll do my best to help you out.”

“Find your own answer to your own questions, Black Forest Cookie. I'll help you out anytime you like, okay?”

“I, Wedding Cake Cookie, promise to stay with you forevermore, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, to cherish you always, until Death do us part.”

“Black Forest Cookie!”

“Ah…! Yes?”

Wedding Cake Cookie was a hair’s breadth away from her, her eyes glittering like stars as she held both of Black Forest Cookie’s hands in her warm grip. “Your very own dream wedding, Black Forest Cookie, you could have it right this evening! Isn't that wonderful? Aren't you excited?”

You're more wonderful than any dream wedding. “Y- Yes…! Thank you very much, Wedding Cake Cookie!”

“Oh, it's nothing at all, not for you~ Okay, out you go, Black Forest Cookie! I have to prepare for your dream wedding! Go out, find a partner, come back at 7pm, and you'll have the time of your life!”

“Wait, eh-?” And Black Forest Cookie was shoved out of the salon.

“...So that's… what happened…” Black Forest Cookie was rocking back and forth in a chair in the clinic, Pure Vanilla Cookie sitting opposite her, and a steaming cup of tea on a table between them.

A soft chuckle. “I'm sure that shows how important your dream wedding is to Wedding Cake Cookie.”

“Yes… I know… But…” Black Forest Cookie pouted, frowning intently into her tea.

“She's preparing for that wedding and everything, but just who are you going to make your partner?” Shadow Milk Cookie stood to one side, looking bored. “Weddings are usually a two-cookie affair, by the way.”

“I- I know that too!” Black Forest Cookie started rocking in her chair again. “But- weddings are a ceremony of… of love. And without Them and the Order, I don't know… How do I...?”

Shadow Milk Cookie tensed up at the mention of Them, stalking over to where Black Forest Cookie sat.

“What did the Order tell you? That they love every cookie? That as long as you loved them, they would love you back? That you didn't need anything else? You know all that is untrue already, don't you?”

“...” Unconsciously, she flinched.

“Shadow Milk, calm down.” Pure Vanilla was frowning, a slight warning in his otherwise tranquil voice. Shadow Milk glowered at his friend in return, but softened his tone. As best as he could.

“...Ugh… They… no. You, why…” A frustrated hiss. “Pure Vanilla. Help me out!”

Another soft chuckle, but tinted with amusement. “Black Forest Cookie, look up. Don't worry, he doesn't mean badly. I'm sure you know that.”

Another hiss from Shadow Milk Cookie.

“Well, what he's saying is… Having made a mistake once doesn't stop you from anything.” Pure Vanilla Cookie smiled, but it looked slightly wistful. “At any time, light could engulf the dark, buds could bloom into flowers, questions can become answers, friends can become lovers, problems can become solutions. There's nothing in your way, Black Forest Cookie.”

“How… do you know…?”

“I have a friend. She's far away right now, on a different continent, but she was deeply in love with… the Truth. She was so enamoured with it, she never stopped once in her pursuit of it. She never realised when she was hurting others or herself. Because she was in love.”

The story Pure Vanilla Cookie was telling sounded sad.

It sounded like Black Forest Cookie.

Do you know this love was hurting you too?

“...What happened to her?”

“Her love didn't turn out well, you can imagine. And as a result, many, many people suffered. Including her. In fact, she probably suffered the most.”

A contemptuous sigh from Shadow Milk Cookie. “She brought it on herself.”

Pure Vanilla Cookie nodded. “Yes, I know. But still, she finally turned back to look at us. And we could recognise that she, too, was a victim of her love. So we helped each other out. We're still helping each other out, but… In the end, everyone has their own problems to solve. I couldn't understand her, and so I can't help her with this… But she has met someone else, who can help her out far better than I can. And she's on her own journey now, solving her own struggles, answering her own questions. Because she knows better than anyone, there's absolutely nothing in her way.

We all make mistakes. Even love can be counted as one too. But after every fall, is a rise.”

Pure Vanilla Cookie reached across the table and patted Black Forest Cookie’s head gently, like a teacher would his disciple. “I've lived longer than you, so take it from me— you have a much longer way to go, Black Forest Cookie. Don't let anything discourage you.”

“...You could also have a wedding by yourself. That's fine too. Self love. Or whatever. You can run around and spout lies. Or sit under a tree for a century. Or even kill a country, if that suits you. Just don't let yourself be chained to one thing.” Shadow Milk Cookie was looking away, but his words had an undercurrent of sincerity to them.

“Please don't kill a country, Black Forest Cookie.” Pure Vanilla knocked his staff against Shadow Milk Cookie. “Regardless, I hope we've helped you somehow.”

“But… it's already close to 7pm… And I don't know… who to bring as a partner…” Black Forest Cookie was back to staring into her tea.

“I'm pretty sure your friend just expects you to bring another friend, and not actually think about this…” Shadow Milk Cookie frowned.

“No! Weddings are important to Wedding Cake Cookie, so- so I have to take this seriously!”

“...You told her about your dream wedding, right?” Pure Vanilla Cookie, ever helpful, asked.

“Yes…! Sunset, and pink, and white, and in our home! Yes…” Black Forest Cookie nodded enthusiastically, revitalised by the question.

“Then, in your dreams, who do you envision there with you?” His questions were like a guide, leading her to an answer already there for the taking.

“...Oh…!”

It really was that simple.

Pink hair, rose syrup, warm hands, sunlight smile. Waving at her from the altar, telling her not to worry, brightening the room just by being there…

“I- I have to go…!” In a hurry, Black Forest Cookie rushed off, knocking her cup of tea over.

“...Will she be alright?”

“Only she can judge that for herself~”

As she pushed open the door to their shared home, Wedding Cake Cookie greeted her with a smile, as always.

“What do you think, Black Forest Cookie? I did great, didn't I?”

“Yes… It's… It's perfect…!”

The humble little living room had ribbons and drapes all over the walls, and the couch had been pushed to the window along with the table, creating the feel of an altar.

“Before the wedding… We of course have to prepare the bride!” With a grin, Wedding Cake Cookie pushed a gown into Black Forest Cookie’s hands along with a bouquet of magnificent pale pink and white roses. Exactly as she'd requested.

Black Forest Cookie was excited. She changed within minutes, stepping out in all the finery, watching for Wedding Cake Cookie’s reaction.

It truly was a gorgeous dress, a symmetrical sleeveless wonder with large roses on the skirt, along with a long, flowy ribbon on the back of the waist.

Wedding Cake Cookie only gasped.

“Oh… does it not look good…?”

“No! Never! I didn't expect it to look so amazing on you, that's all! I mean, I knew you would look fantastical in anything, but this...” Wedding Cake Cookie was staring with wide eyes. “You didn't get a partner in the end, right? If you had, I would really be envious…”

“No! I do have a partner!”

“Eh?” The air seemed to freeze.

“Yes! You! Wedding Cake Cookie, I want you to be my partner…!”

Wedding Cake Cookie could only blink, then blush as it hit her. “Hello?! Don't phrase things so misleadingly…!”

Black Forest Cookie nodded aggressively. “Mmm…! We have to walk down the altar together…!”

“Uhm, that's right, but I'm not in attire…”

“You're already very pretty, so it's okay…!”

Together, they walked down to the couch, the sunset colouring everything warm orange. It was informal and definitely not the length a real wedding hall would have, but Black Forest Cookie still took large steps, her hand holding Wedding Cake Cookie’s tightly.

“After we reach the altar… it's wedding vows, right?”

Wedding Cake Cookie was looking increasingly flustered. “H- How about we make the same promise? You remember, right, Black Forest Cookie?”

“I… I want to lead this time…!”

“R- Really?”

“Mm…! Yes, because, Wedding Cake Cookie, you're very important to me! This bond, I want you to know that, that it means so much to me…!”

Black Forest Cookie had her bouquet in one hand, and Wedding Cake Cookie’s hand in the other, as she stood straight, as though it were a real wedding with a real audience.

“I, Black Forest Cookie…”

“I- I, Wedding Cake Cookie…”

“...Promise to love you forevermore…”

“Eh? Black Forest Cookie…?”

“Wedding Cake Cookie, do you love me?”

“I…!” Wedding Cake’s face was vibrant crimson by this point, like a rose in full bloom. “That's…! How could I not, when you're asking like that…?!”

“Then repeat after me!” Hearing that was already enough to make Black Forest Cookie overjoyed. “Our new promise!”

“Cough…! Yes, I, Wedding Cake Cookie, promise to love you forevermore…”

“Yes, yes! For better or for worse, in sickness and in health…”

“For better or for worse, in sickness and in health…!”

“To cherish you always, even after Death does us part!”

“To, to cherish you always, even after Death does us part…!”

Wedding Cake Cookie was a mess, blushing and flustered, but Black Forest Cookie still thought she looked so, so amazing, so wonderful. No matter what, it was Wedding Cake Cookie who had pulled her into this moment, from the midnight pitch darkness to the glow of sunset, from the cold Monastery into this warm little home.

Black Forest Cookie was confident she could call this love

“I love you, Wedding Cake Cookie…! Forever, and ever, I'll love you always...!”

“R- Really… Me... I guess I'm really the lucky one here…” Wedding Cake Cookie could only laugh at herself. “Of course, I love you too, Black Forest Cookie. Forever, and ever, I, too, will love you always.”

Under the sunset, a promise was made in a modest little celebration, for a brilliant, everlasting bond.
