Almost.

Work Text:

“Soonyoung, I really think this is a bad idea!” Wonwoo says as they sneakily enter their university’s gym.

“Wonwoo-ya, it’s fine! We can’t leave this poor thing here!” A tiny grunt escapes right by Soonyoung’s arms and Wonwoo stares at the little puppy Soonyoung is cradling in his arms. “Isn’t that right, little baby? I’ll call you Latte!”

“You named him?!” Wonwoo screeches in disbelief at his best friend.

Just a half an hour ago, the Taekwondo team was celebrating their recent win and went out for their yearly team carbo loading session, with heaps of meat and almost kilograms worth of kimchi being passed around.

Just ten minutes ago, Soonyoung and Wonwoo passed by a small abandoned puppy right outside the school’s almost deserted gate.

And about five minutes ago, Soonyoung dragged his best friend straight into their locker rooms for the Taekwondo team.

“Yes! Look! He looks just like the coffee Jihoonie likes to drink.” Soonyoung says innocently as he raises the little brown puppy towards his best friend.

Wonwoo isn’t sure if he should be amused that Soonyoung is so madly in love with Jihoon to name a dog after him, or irritated that his best friend hasn’t thought about the possible consequences of this whole fiasco.

“I can’t believe you named him in the middle of me panicking over this!” Wonwoo scolds him.

“Oh relax, Wons! It’s literally one night, he’ll stay in my locker for the meantime with some treats and my soft blankets.” Latte snuggles cozily into the makeshift bed Soonyoung has made in his locker with some of his older towels and emergency blankets, making Soonyoung coo. “And it’s perfect because I still have to get here earlier than Coach anyway as captain. So it all plays out.”

Wonwoo huffs because, honestly, what more can he say when his best friend actually made sense. Soonyoung was always tasked to go in ahead of everybody else anyway, and he’s never been late to it, being a dumb robotic workaholic was in his nature.

“Fine, but I’m taking the blame!” He says with some sass that Soonyoung evidently ignores.

“Whatever, anyway let’s go. Wanna call Jihoon before I get to bed.” Soonyoung tucks Latte in one more time before heading out of their gym.

“Speaking of Jihoon, isn’t your anniversary coming up?” Soonyoung’s eyes visibly light up and oh god was it disgusting (adorable) to see his best friend be so whipped.

“It’s next week! Oh, I have everything planned out!” He says and goes on about his plans and Soonyoung honestly feels like he has so much more ideas that one night is a little short of how much love he has to show Jihoon.

He booked a dinner reservation almost months in advance at a nearby Omakase restaurant. He had to pull a few strings to get seats because apparently you have to book the place almost two months in advance; Soonyoung almost got whiplash from all the people he had to talk to. He booked one of its rooms just for them and made sure they got a private chef to talk about the food and cook the food perfectly. He knows Jihoon has always been fascinated with Japanese culture and food so this was absolutely perfect.

After their perfect dinner would be a perfect movie in Soonyoung’s apartment, where he would set up fairy lights and a little fort for them to eat popcorn and cuddle until they fell asleep or maybe they’d start having sex like rabbits, the possibilities are honestly pretty endless.

He has everything planned out.

Almost.

“What the hell is this?!” Soonyoung only gulps at his Coach’s outburst, not giving him enough time to tidy up the mess around him.

It’s not that Soonyoung didn’t make it on time for their usual training session. In fact, he was an hour earlier than his usual arrival. He was too excited about Latte that he completely overlooked what dogs, even tiny puppies, are capable of.

A mess. An absolute mess. Not only did Latte wake up so much earlier than Soonyoung, but he probably slept so well that his energy levels were through the roof. Soonyoung did, after all, feed him with a lot of treats and kept him warm in his locker. In fact, Latte was probably so excited that he bit and ravaged every single bit of equipment he could find.

Their kickpads were basically flimsy sticks at this point and even their sack-like punching bags had itty bitty bite marks on the edges, some of the inner padding now visible to the naked eye. Their individual foot gloves now torn to shreds and Latte is peacefully licking his paws on the only towel he’s decided not to shred to pieces aka Soonyoung’s towel.

“Hi, Coach?” Soonyoung unsurely says before all of his team members make it in to the locker room.

“Oh my god, did we get robbed?!” Kyungmin dramatically says and genuinely believes until Minghao points out the bite marks on the punching bag.

“Did we get mobbed by fucking Clifford the tiny red dog?” Minghao says with disgust as he raises the bitten towel with obvious drool.

“Oh my god! Is that a puppy?!” Seungkwan excitedly says and the rest of the team – save for Wonwoo, of course – coo around Latte.

“Kwon! You have some explaining to do!” Soonyoung sighs in defeat and follows his Coach outside to the gym and explain what happened. There’s really no chance for him to  get out of this one.

—

“Community service. And payment for the destroyed equipment, to be taken gradually out of your winning incentives.” Soonyoung’s Coach says almost a week after the incident.

Sadly, for Soonyoung, Latte didn’t just destroy their team’s equipment, which he honestly would have just paid for, but Latte managed to gnaw at some built in tables and other older facilities of the locker rooms too. This only meant that the Coach had protocol to report it their school president and let them decide on it.

Soonyoung sighs deeply before aquiescing. “Fine, sounds fair. When do I go.”

“Tomorrow. You start at 8:00 P.M.” No fucking way! Tomorrow is his and JIhoon’s anniversary! The one thing he’s spent the last few months planning! This can’t be! Jihoon was so excited for the Omakase too!

“Coach! Can’t I do the next day? Or in the morning! Please!” Soonyoung practically begs. “It’s my anniversary with Jihoon, Coach please!”

His Coach admittedly feels bad, but it’s the best he could do with what the school board originally wanted. “Sorry, Kwon. It’s either tomorrow or you can’t play in the next tournament. I can’t risk our team right now, we’re nearing championships.” He gives Soonyoung a little tap on the shoulder before leave as Soonyoung nods sadly.

Jagi, I’m outside your gym <3

Soonyoung feels horrible, they’ve been looking forward to their night off form everything and just have some time together and now he had to crush his boyfriend’s spirits because he was too weak for a cute puppy (who was now in the custody of Seungkwan and Hansol for hte time being).

He walks all sullen and smiles sadly as he sees Jihoon fiddling on his phone by the gym’s entrance.

“Hey, Jagi!” Jihoon cheerfully says, grabbing Soonyoung’s bags and planting a kiss on his cheeks. “How was practice? You seem tired.”

“Yeah, just a little, let’s talk about it when we get settled somewhere, okay?” Jihoon only nods, seeing how sad his boyfriend is.

They settle at a nearby chicken spot, Jihoon knowing fully well that friend chicken can always make Soonyoung smile and Soonyoung could kiss him for knowing even the tiniest little detail about him.

It works, but still, Soonyoung keeps sighing and Jihoon doesn’t wanna push.

They walk hand-in-hand back to Soonyoung’s apartment, the chicken only bring up Soonyoung’s energy levels by a rough 40%. “ Jagi…” Soonyoung begins. “I’m so sorry.” A clear sob is heard before Soonyoung hugs Jihoon very tightly. Jihoon’s thoughts spike up in worry when he feels a tiny damp pool by his hoodie, obviously from Soonyoung’s tears.

“Hey, hey. What’s wrong, love?” Jihoon cups his boyfriend’s cheeks in his face, gently wiping away tears. “You can tell me anything.”

Soonyoung replies in between sobs that Jihoon barely gets what he’s saying. “Hey, Jagi. Look at me…” Jihoon cuts him from his sobs and directs Soonyoung’s eyes to his. “...relax, okay? Tell me what happened.”

Soonyoung takes a deep breath before explaining again and holds both of Jihoon’s hands. “Remember what happened to Latte? The school board decided and they were not gonna let me play. Coach had to negotiate and the only way they’re gonna let me off is by doing community service.” Jihoon nods unsurely, not completely understanding why Soonyoung is so upset by that. “Community Service, I have to do it tomorrow at 8:00 P.M. No rescheduling allowed.”

“Oh.” Soonyoung feels terrible. He honestly didn’t expect the amount of tears and embarrassing amount of snot he just released but he can’t help it! They were both looking forward to this and he ruined their first ever anniversary date!

“I’m so sorry, Jihoonie.” He says again, close to another round of tears before Jihoon gently pecks his lips.

“Hey, Soonie. You didn’t want this, right?” Jihoon begins. Soonyoung shakes his head cutely. “I’m disappointed, I’m not gonna lie. But the restaurant’s there, it’s not leaving, we can book it again next time, okay?”

“Jihoonie! It’s our first ever anniversary tomorrow! I ruined it! I’m such a stupid idiot!” Soonyoung crosses his arms and sobs harder.

“Hey, it is what it is.” Jihoon says. “Besides, you're my stupid idiot though” He says lovingly and thankfully, it induces a small giggle out of Soonyoung. “Don’t worry, okay? I got this.”

Unbeknownst to Soonyoung, Jihoon had his own plan in mind,

Don’t have to worry, Soonie.

–

Do good, Jagi! I’ll see you after your service <3

Soonyoung smiles a little bit at his boyfriend’s message. While he’s still upset about this whole fiasco he got himself into, Jihoon and he decided that movie night at his place was still a good way to go. Jihoon was gonna cook some food for them while Soonyoung grabs some snacks and other drinks along the way home. He already got Jihoon flowers, and vice versa, as well as some coffee and breakfast, though classes and training kept them from seeing each other majority of the day.

Nonetheless, Soonyoung feels a bit better about his anniversary now that Jihoon is actually the most understanding boyfriend ever.

He heads over to the school auditorium, where he has to clean it up for a huge conference some of the academe were holding the next day. He sighs as he sees the amount of floor and seats he has to mop and wipe, respectively.

He does his duties as he listens to some music, getting slightly down again as he remembers he should have been at an Omakase and hearing really interesting stories about sushi and Japanese food with Jihoon.

He should be laughing with Jihoon, and cooing at Jihoon, and feeding Jihoon, and holding his hand and kiss—he’s cut off by a sudden slam of the door.

“Hey, kid.” A security guard says. “Looks like you’ve got another troublemaker friend. Professor Jang says you gotta clean this together.”

Soonyoung sighs, he’s not really in the mood to talk to people right now, or even just greeting someone. He just wants to get this over with so he can go celebrate his anniversary with–”Jihoon?!”

A smile escapes Jihoon’s lips pretending to inspect the place. “So we’re cleaning this shit up?” Soonyoung immediately runs up to his boyfriend and spins him around.

“What are you doing here?! And what did he mean by troublemaker? Are you in community service right now too?!”

“Well, Seungkwan and Hansol might have asked me to take care of Latte today and I might have accidentally let him out of my watch and eat some of the old gloves of the baseball team.” He winks at Soonyoung playfully and oh god was Soonyoung in love.

“You got into trouble? For me?” That sounds almost fucked up to anybody outside their relationship but Jihoon can clearly see the light in Soonyoung’s eyes.

“Well, I told you, I got this.” He says proudly. “I’m not gonna let our child keep us from spending the whole night of our anniversary together.” Soonyoung almost misses the way Jihoon refers to Latte as their child.

“God, I love you so much!” He says and hugs Jihoon tighter than ever and plants his entire face with kisses. “I love you i love you i love you!”

“I love you too, Jagi. Happy Anniversary” Jihoon softly says, planting the sweetest and cheesiest kiss on Soonyoung’s soft lips.

“Happy Anniversary, jagi.” Soonyoung finally says and drags Jihoon around to help him mop.

So it took them a little itty bitty longer to finish cleaning up.
