Summary:

After a long mission that keeps Leon away from home for weeks, he's finally able to come home to his wife.

Notes:

Day one of my writing prompts challenge! The Resident Evil timeline is too confusing, so this just takes place like a year and a half after RE4 and if something else was happening with him, no it wasn’t. Regardless, married Kennigan for my fellow Kenngian shippers. Honestly one of my fav rarepairs.

Now that's out of the way, I hope you enjoy!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Leon gets off of his bike and stumbles a bit. He cringes as he puts too much pressure on the knee he hurt the day before. He pulls his backpack fully onto his shoulder and notices that Hunnigan’s car isn’t there.

She must have had to work late.

He walks to the door and tries the knob, where it swings open. He pulls the gun out of his holster and creeps in, ignoring the gentle throbbing from his knee. He leans against the wall at the intersection between the hallway, living room, and the kitchen. He hears a small sound from the kitchen, so he moves out and heads that way. When he gets in there, Hunnigan’s there wearing an apron and she’s standing by the stove. She turns in just enough time to see Leon pointing his gun at her before he quickly holsters it.

“What just happened?” she asks, folding her arms with a frown firmly on her face.

“Your car wasn’t in the driveway and the door was unlocked,” Leon says. “I thought someone broke in.”

She sighs, then goes over and wraps him in a hug. He feels all of his tension disappear and practically melts into her embrace. She laughs, a soft sound that makes Leon smile.

“You’re such a German Shepard,” she says. “Gosh, I should have known that this was gonna be our lives after moving in together.”

“I’m surprised it took as long as it did for you to learn that. We’ve been married for…” He looks at his watch. “Five months and like fourteen days. This long?”

She pinches his arm and he laughs.

“I was worried that I was gonna miss our six month anniversary at the rate that it was going,” Leon says. “Luckily, they dropped a bomb on themselves instead of me, so I was able to come home much earlier.”

“And you didn’t have anything to do with them dropping it on themselves?” Hunnigan asks, going back to the stove.

“Of course not,” Leon answers. “I don’t know how you could accuse me of such a thing.”

She turns so he can see her roll her eyes.

“Whatcha makin’?” Leon asks, walking over and wrapping his arms around her.

“Steak, that’s what you said you wanted when you got back.”

“Yeah, but how did you know when I was coming back? I had someone else working the case with me.”

“Yeah, but she let me know when you got off the plane.”

“Ah, okay. That makes sense considering you seem to be friends with everyone in the office.”

“Not everyone, but I have good work relationships with most of our co-workers. Dinner’s ready though so you should grab plates.”

Leon sets the table while Hunnigan gets everything else set up. They sit down and Leon’s slightly uncomfortable due to all the aches and pains, he’s glad to be back with Hunnigan. Dinner is filled with Hunnigan telling Leon what she’s been up to while he was away and Leon skirting around her questions concerning his mission. Not that he can’t tell her, she has a higher clearance than he does, but he doesn’t want to talk about it. Sometimes he’d just rather the house be a safe place from the world outside, including and especially, his job as a US Agent. Hunnigan seems to take the hint after the third question that’s skillfully avoided and doesn’t ask anything more.

After dinner, Leon does the dishes. He tries to ignore his knee, but it is getting harder because he’s trying not to let Hunnigan know about the injury so he’s behaving like normal. When he’s done, he heads into their room. She’s sitting in her pajamas, reading a book while covered up in bed. Leon gives her a smirk before going into the adjoining bathroom to change. He manages not to make any sounds as he changes, which is a relief.

He comes back in and her bookmark’s in her book, her arms folded.

“What?” Leon asks as he climbs into bed next to her.

“What are we, teenagers?” she asks. “Changing in the bathroom? What are you hiding?”

“Nothing,” he lies through his teeth.

“One more minute for lies and then you have to start answering my questions honestly.”

“Can I just tell you the truth and avoid having to sleep on the couch?” Leon asks.

“You can,” she answers, “and I would be sleeping on the couch. It’s an injury.”

“There’s no fooling you, sweetheart. It’s my knee.”

“Damage?”

“Just strained something and I’ll be fine in a little while.”

“Promise?”

Leon raises his right hand, “Cross my heart and hope that Fredrick chokes.”

Hunnigan snorts, which makes Leon laugh. “You are not out of trouble,” Hunnigan says.

“I’m sorry, okay,” Leon says. “I just… I wanted tonight to be normal, to not have to think about what happened the last three weeks.”

“I’m not asking questions about it, I just need to know when you’re hurt. We live together, you can’t just avoid me so I don’t ask the questions.”

Leon nods, “It won’t happen again.”

“Oh, I’m sure it will. Just remember this little chat so you don’t do it for too long.”

“I will try not to do it again. Can I go to sleep now?” Leon asks.

“Mhmm. I’m not stopping you.”

Leon lays down and closes his eyes.

Hunnigan will get comfortable when she’s done reading.

Arms wrap around his midsection and he sighs in content.

I’m so glad to be home.
