Work Text:
Shinya stared at the two files in front of him and tried to reign in his rage.
“I understand if you decide not to accept this responsibility.” The caseworker said gently, “From what I understand, you are a Pro-Hero, and that type of career takes a large amount of time, especially for one as young as yourself.”
Shinya nodded, but kept his eyes on the glossed faces of two younger boys. Three year old's. Twins.
“You have had zero contact with them given the circumstances, so it would be a simple case to transfer them to a local foster organization.”
Shinya took a deep breath and slowly exhaled. With a steady mind he took both folders in hand and rose from his seat.
“Please take me to them. I would like to meet my younger brothers.”
-
“Boys, you have a visitor.”
Satoru refused to look up from his video game and it seemed Kakashi had the same goal to ignore their social worker as he continued to feign sleep. Or maybe he really was sleeping. Satoru still had a hard time telling the difference if he didn’t use his Six Eyes technique. Reincarnated ninjas could be tricky like that.
“Your older brother is here to meet you.”
That, at least, got Satoru’s attention.
He paused his game to turn towards the door, and sure enough, a strange man was standing just behind their social worker.
He had the same pale hair that he and Kakashi had, even if it was styled horrendously. His eye and face shape were also the same to theirs, so the possibility of this being a relative was certainly high.
But the one thing he couldn't accept…
“I don’t trust him. His mustache is gross.”
The social worker spluttered and tried to give her apologies for Satoru simply stating the truth, but surprisingly, the man gave a loud guffaw.
“I commend you on your cautiousness with strangers, but I think you should have better reasons than unkempt facial hair.” The man smirked as he rubbed at his stubbly chin and the thin hairs on his upper lip.
Satoru shrugged, “Where have you been? We didn’t know we had a brother. You look too old to be a brother.”
That caused the man to frown, but he didn’t seem to be upset at him specifically. He gave a look to the still flustered worker and she gave a nod and closed the door to the room on her way out.
Oh, this was a serious moment wasn’t it.
“Well, first off, my name is Kamihara Shinya. I read both of your files that your case worker gave me. You’re Kamihara Satoru, right?”
“Hmm,” Satoru hummed, “You aren't treating me like a baby. That’s kinda cool.”
His new brother, Shinya, smiled and sat across from him on the floor, “Your files commented how well you two speak, so I made a guess that you’re smart enough to not appreciate being babied.”
Satoru pouted, “I don’t want to be treated like a baby, but I do want to be spoiled.”
To his surprise once more, Shinya gave another bark of surprised laughter and smiled.
“I appreciate the honesty. And to answer your previous question, the reason I haven’t been around is because I didn’t know you two existed.”
Satoru’s new brother grimaced, but held nothing back, “I don’t know if you know this, but our dad is absolute trash, and I left home as soon as I could. But, apparently, your mother somehow discovered my contact information from him and put me as an emergency contact for you two just in case anything happened, and, well…”
With spread hands, Shinya gestured to the room at large to encompass the entire situation they currently found themselves in.
Satoru nodded, “Okay, I believe you. Are you here to take us then? Or just introducing yourself? Me and Kakashi will be fine either way. Kids can be a lot.”
Kakashi had an entire plan to live as vigilantes and vagrants in the event that they were put in the foster system. It had not sounded half bad, so Satoru truly was not upset at the thought of this new found blood relative abandoning them to the system.
Kakashi had put so much energy into his paranoid planning. It would be a shame to toss it.
But Shinya frowned and shook his head as he scooted closer across the rug to sit closer to Satoru.
“No, no, Satoru. The case worker did offer me the chance to say no,” Satoru could feel his eyebrows rise in surprise at the honesty, and Shinya continued, “But you two are my brothers, even with our uncommon age gap. I may have friends and loved ones in my life now… But I have very little family.”
Shinya slowly reached out and placed his fingertips gently over Satoru’s hand, “I will understand if you don’t want to come with me. I’m a stranger after all, and I will respect your wishes. But I am telling you honestly that I am approaching this situation with no regrets or hesitation. I would adore having more family in my life.”
Satoru stared into the eyes of this older brother and he watched as the man made no move to smile with reassurance or frown with impatience. He simply watched Satoru back calmly.
With a dull flash, Satoru activated his Six Eyes, and he saw with perfect clarity the way Shinya flinched minutely at the use of his power.
“Say it again.” He ordered.
Shinya nodded.
“I want to get to know you and your brother for as long as you allow it. And for as long as that is and past it, I will always desire for the two of you to be my family.”
There were no indications that he was lying. Satoru searched for the minute cues that Kakashi had taught him to look out for, and he saw none.
Maybe he just wasn’t as good as Kakashi with the whole ninja interrogation thing, but he also couldn’t see a reason for Shinya to lie to him about something like this.
“Okay. I believe you about that too. We’ll go with you, but on one condition.” Satoru smirked.
Shinya blinked, “And what is that?”
“You gotta find us first!” He cheered, and pointed up to the bed that he had been sitting against.
Shinya looked up and jolted when he realized that Kakashi was no longer there.
“Satoru- what-” Shinya choked and frantically looked around the room.
Both boys had disappeared in the blink of an eye.
-
Giggling on the rooftop of the building, Satoru swung his legs as he looked over the busy metropolitan environment.
Kakashi covered his mouth with a palm as he yawned, which Satoru didn’t get since he was wearing a mask, but he wasn’t going to question his brother in reincarnation.
“Are you sure you want to live with that guy? We could have a lot more freedom without him.” Kakashi mumbled sleepily.
So he really had been sleeping. Good for him. From what he had told him about his past life, the man surely needed it.
“I think it would be interesting to try. If he turns out to be an asshole, we can always ditch him. But I have always wondered what it's like to be taken care of without ulterior motives.” Satoru stated plainly.
Kakashi nodded slowly, “I don’t mind following your lead for this then. I’ll go along with your decision, but you’re going to have to be the one to collect my stashes from around the area. I worked hard to hide those y’know.”
Satoru groaned, “Fine. But I’m going to complain while I do it!”
Kakashi shrugged, “Like I’m going to be around to hear it.”
Satoru pouted and continued to complain to his companion, to which Kakashi chose to lay back on the warm concrete and bask in the sun like a cat, humming to parts of Satoru’s ranting.
Satoru was slightly impressed when only ten minutes later, Shinya suddenly materialized on the roof along with them, snatched the collars of their shirts and dragged them away from the edge of the building.
“What on earth are you doing at the edge!? It’s dangerous there!”
Satoru laughed at that and decided he was willing to give this man a chance. He seemed to have his priorities straight.
“Mmm, you’re pretty fast. I won’t mind being kidnapped by you.” Kakashi said drolly.
Shinya gaped and Satoru continued to giggle.
He was excited for whatever came next from here.
