Work Text:
Aizawa had been in the middle of class when everything went to shit. It had been a normal class of mildly too loud students and everything had been fine.
Then his phone went off. With the cursed tune attached to the app that was only for emergencies. That was literally the name of the app. Only For Emergencies. It bypasses the silent mode his phone was always on during class and patrol, an obnoxiously loud beep that Aizawa was pretty sure would become part of his nightmares if he ever failed to get to it on time.
His phone was out of his pocket immediately, ignoring the way his students all looked at him with smirks like he was receiving a message from some love interest or some shit. Detention to all of them.
The alert was simple- almost painfully so.

That’s all Aizawa had to go of of, but he didn’t care. The vigilante, his unofficial kid, was in danger. Bad enough to use this app- something he had never done before for fear Aizawa would somehow track it back to his identity. So yeah. This was terrifying.
“I’ve got an emergency, use this lesson as a free study, Kai go to the Teacher’s office and get Mic to cover for me,” Aizawa instructed and, without another thought, he ran, not even waiting to check he had been understood. Viridian wasn’t too far from here, but Aizawa couldn’t help the nerves that built up as he swung rooftop to rooftop, jumping over larger gaps then he probably would normally because it was the fastest route. He had to get to the kid. He had no clue what had happened, no clue what was so bad that Viridian actually contacted him.
When he lands in the alleyway with the linked address, fear gripped him. Viridian wasn’t there. Did someone take him? Was he too late? What had happened?
Aizawa searched around, desperate for clues, and almost chocked when he found an unmasked boy in civilian clothes, with Viridian’s unmistakable green hair, unconscious and bleeding heavily. The boy was too impossibly young to be Viridian but Aizawa knew there was no denying it. He had guessed the vigilante was a kid but… this was too young.
“V? V! Shit, Viridian, can you hear me? Open your eyes kid! What’s your name? Can you squeeze my fingers kid?” Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Ok, definitely unconsious, Aizawa checked his breathing, praying it was just shallow, but there was nothing. He moved the boy, making sure the airway was clear and barely holding back panic. Now was not the time to panic, he knew all the steps. He hadn’t done CPR on an actual person in two years, and never on a kid this young, but he could do it, he knows that much.
With a shaky breath, Aizawa started the compressions, he counted the beat carefully, matching it as well as he could and wincing at it all. He wanted to go faster, to somehow jumpstart the heart but he didn’t have anything to do that and he knew logically what he had to do. He just had to be rational. Logical. Smart. Safe.
The two breaths were a desperate plea for it to work, but it didn’t, so Aizawa went back to the compressions. It wasn’t right for a kid this young to need CPR. What had happened? It must have been a villain based on the burn marks, but he was in civilian clothes. He clearly hadn’t been trying to get into a fight.
He held in a chocked sob at the complete lack of reaction from the boy, commanding his phone through voice activation to call emergency services. He should have done that straight away. What was he doing?
Aizawa focused on the compressions. Thirty compressions. Two breaths. Yes he was a hero. Yes that was his location. Yes he was doing CPR. No the boy wasn’t breathing. Thirty compressions. Two breaths.
Aizawa couldn’t focus on the speaker’s voice. Instead he focused on the beats. 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30. Breath. Breath. 1 2 3 4, no he doesn’t know where the boy’s family are, 9 10 11 12 13, no there are no villains nearby, 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26, yes he was calm and knew what he was doing, breath, breath, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7…
On and on it went for what felt like hours- he knew it wasn’t but fuck it felt like it was- before finally the ambulance came and took the boy away. Aizawa numbly followed them to the hospital, desperately needing to know what would happen, and painfully terrified of what they might say. Had he been to slow? Had Viridian been dead too long?
When he arrived, at the hospital, the kid was thankfully breathing and beating his heart on his own, all be it weakly. Aizawa could not be more relieved, but still he had to wait, terrified to find out how long before his arrival that Viridian had stopped breathing.
With the CPR, Viridian was still getting air to his whole body, but before that? If the brain didn’t have enough oxygen… No. No, Aizawa refused to think like that. Refused to, because he knew he would cry if he did and Aizawa refused to cry. It didn’t help that this kid was basically his son and they still didn’t know if he was brain dead or not, but Aizawa had a reputation to uphold and crying did not fit into that.
No. Aizawa would not cry. He simply refused. As long as this kid made it out alive, Aizawa would not cry. That was his rule. He could do that. The kid wouldn’t die. Aizawa refused to let him, but fuck was Aizawa scared as hell. He would not- could not lose his problem child. He hadn’t realised just how attatched he was until this. Sure he knew he cared for Viridian, but now Aizawa knew he would never let the boy out of his sight again if he could help it.
That had been too close- still was too close. All Aizawa could do was pray it was only too close, not worse. Pray Viridian was ok.
