Work Text:

The hum of the pitt was a familiar comfort to Dr. Frank Langdon as he stepped through the doors. But today, everything felt different. The weight of his past, the struggle to stay clean, the secrets of a broken marriage that still clung to him—it all seemed to press down on him in a way it hadn't before. It had been six months since he'd walked these halls, six long months spent in rehab and self-reflection. Now, standing in the same sterile hallway, he wasn’t sure if he felt like a man starting over or someone who would always be defined by what he had lost.

He had expected wary looks, whispers behind his back, a general atmosphere of caution. And that's exactly what he got from most of his colleagues. Everyone except one person.

Dr. Mel King was already at the nurse's station, bent over a patient chart. Frank knew her well enough to recognize the small things—the way she always wore a jacket over her scrubs, the braid that was always neatly pulled back, and the quiet, careful way she navigated the chaos of the ER. He had always admired her, but now, seeing her after everything, his admiration seemed to have deepened into something more, something he wasn’t ready to name.

As he walked closer, Mel looked up. For a moment, her gaze locked on his, and then, to Frank’s surprise, her whole face lit up like a child who had just been handed their favorite toy.

“Dr. Langdon!” she exclaimed, her voice bright, almost giddy. “Oh my god, you’re back!”

The sound of her voice hit him like a wave—genuine, unguarded excitement. She practically bounced on her heels, her braid swaying with every movement as she hurried toward him, her eyes wide with enthusiasm. It was such an unfiltered reaction that Frank didn’t know what to do with himself. He hadn’t expected to be welcomed this way, certainly not by her.

“Mel,” he said, forcing a smile, though it felt tight, his chest constricting with the mix of emotions swirling inside him. “It’s good to see you too.”

She grinned, her energy practically radiating off her. “I can’t believe it! I thought you might be gone longer! How’s everything? How are you?”

Frank hesitated, briefly thrown by her energy. Everyone else had treated him with a kind of clinical wariness, keeping their distance. But Mel—Mel was different. She didn’t look at him with pity or judgment; she only seemed thrilled to see him.

“It’s... it’s been tough,” he admitted, his voice low. “But I’m here. Ready to get back to work.”

Her eyes softened with understanding, and she took a small step closer, her hands clasping in front of her like she could barely contain her excitement. “I knew you’d get back here. You’re strong. I’ve always known that.”

Frank felt a strange pang of guilt. She didn’t know everything. She didn’t know about the lies he’d told or the marriage that had crumbled. But the way she spoke—so simply, so believably—it made him feel like maybe he wasn’t beyond redemption.

“Thanks, Mel,” he murmured, his voice thick with gratitude he didn’t know how to express.

There was an earnestness in her smile that made him want to let down every wall he had carefully built over the past few years. He could see the childlike enthusiasm in her eyes, the way she always seemed to wear her emotions on her sleeve, and for the first time in a long while, Frank felt a flicker of hope.

“I’m glad you’re here,” she said, her voice quieter now, but still so full of sincerity. “We all missed you. I missed you.”

He nodded, swallowing against the lump in his throat. The honesty in her words stung in a way he hadn’t expected. No one had ever made him feel seen like this—not since the addiction had taken hold, not since he’d become someone even he didn’t recognize.

“Yeah, well... I’ve missed this place,” he said, gesturing around. “And—well—everyone here. Even if it doesn’t always feel like it.”

Mel’s face softened, and she placed a gentle hand on his arm. It was a small gesture, but it felt like an anchor in a sea of uncertainty.

“You don’t have to prove anything to anyone,” she said, her voice quiet but steady. “Not to me, not to anyone here. You’re here, and that’s what matters.”

Frank stared at her, his heart pounding in his chest. How could she be so... so unguarded? So open? In a world that was constantly judging, Mel was the one person who treated him like he was worthy of a second chance.

He hadn’t realized how much he needed that until now.

"Thanks, Mel," he said again, this time with more feeling, because he couldn’t think of a better way to express it.

She smiled, her eyes sparkling. “I mean it. If you ever need someone to talk to—about anything—I’m here, okay?”

He wasn’t sure why, but that simple offer made him feel something he hadn’t allowed himself to feel in months—relief. Maybe he didn’t have it all together, maybe he wasn’t the man he wanted to be yet, but with Mel’s steady presence, he could almost believe he might one day get there.

“I’ll keep that in mind,” he said, his voice soft.

And as Mel turned back to her duties, her energy still radiating around the pitt like a beacon of hope, Frank stood there, a little overwhelmed but also—somehow—more hopeful than he had been in a long time.

For the first time since his return, he felt like maybe, just maybe, he had a chance at starting over. And Mel—bright, kind, and utterly sincere—was a big part of that.

Perhaps she wasn’t just the bright spot in the pitt. Perhaps, in time, she might become the reason he believed in new beginnings at all.
