My Favourite Thing About Spring [posted 11th April 2016, 17:16, by MartinMuses]
Look, I know I write one of these about every season every year, but there’s something so gloriously magical about the turning of the seasons, isn’t there? I always find myself floundering when I get asked what my favourite season is. Isn’t the joy of seasons the fact that they’re always changing, always different? I could write about each season for the next ten years and still not run out of things to love (and I might just do that!).
This year, my favourite thing about spring is that it’s when the spiders start showing up again.
I know spiders aren’t popular, but even if we can’t celebrate them for themselves, we can at least appreciate the super important job they do for the ecosystem! They’re both important predators of insects that can be really harmful if there’s too many of them, and important prey for all sorts of animals like birds and lizards and smaller mammals.
And yeah, okay, I know I’m a bit weird for this, but I like spiders. Sure, they look a bit scary to a lot of us, but that’s not their fault! They just want to live, like everything else, and I don’t think that’s unreasonable. And once you start learning about them, they’re genuinely fascinating. Did you know that the type of lungs spiders have are called book lungs? Isn’t that great?!
I’ve only seen a couple of big ones in my house so far this year, but it really gave me a lift. I’ve named them Imelda and Eglantine and I hope they stick around!
