Summary
The Magnus Institute of Art is not a university. It is an artists' collective, with a rotating cast of Resident Artists and the amateurs they've agreed to take on for a year. It is highly prestigious and exclusive, and somehow Martin got in without actually applying.
The Institute is run by famed modern artist Elias Bouchard, who very rarely takes on charges. He's made quite an exception for Jon.
Art can draw out such powerful emotion, after all. It just needs the right guiding hand.

After nearly a year in prison, Breekon and Hope were just about ready to put their ingenious escape plan into motion. They had plotted, schemed, ironed out all the snags and hiccups, and spent several months painstakingly sharpening teaspoons.
It was something of an anticlimax, then, to be called to an unscheduled parole hearing and told that, due to a very effective appeal (which they hadn’t even been aware of) the charges had been revised and their sentence drastically reduced.
In short, they were free to go.
Which was bewildering, of course, but they managed, just about, to prevent themselves from arguing on the grounds of all the effort they had put into their plans and to accept their release gracefully.

Sasha and Tim panicked as they dragged their semi conscious friend through the street. “Come on Jon, come on, don't you die!" Tim slapped his face desperately. “We’re only about ten blocks from the hospital, just hold on!”
Jon slurred, “it's too late, Tim. It bit me and I'm as good as dead."
“Don't say that!" Sasha roughly wiped tears from her face. “You're not dead yet and maybe it was a dry bite-"
“Sasha… I can already feel it. I'm Changing.” Jon broke down with an agonized whimper and Sasha and Tim stopped walking and turned to look at each other in horror. If this was the case then their friend really was as good as dead. Everyone knew that becoming a vampire was a death sentence as soon as it was discovered and that never took long with their need for human blood for sustenance. No, there were only three options once someone turned. One, they tried to hide it and eventually got caught sneaking blood from a blood bank or trying to find someone to feed from; two, they didn’t eat for too long and went feral; or three, they turned themselves in and were ‘humanely’ euthanized by the UK government.

Martin woke up to the sound of sobbing in the alley below and let out a heavy sigh.
