Notes:

Welcome to my fourth fanfic! This is my first attempt at a real Sonamy story, and I thought a good way to explore it would to be to build off of the themes and direction of Sonic Frontiers. I personally got a lot from the interactions between Sonic and Amy on the first island, and wanted to build off it. A couple of disclaimers: I do not own these characters, this is a work of fanfiction. This story was written with the assistance of an AI generator, but it WAS NOT written by AI directly. All the ideas in this story are my own. Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1: Sharing an umbrella.

Chapter Text

In the quiet corner of Tails' workshop, Sonic the Hedgehog's gloved hands danced across a tablet, eyes flickering as he studied the data before him. The place was full of tools and gadgets, a testament to the fox's endless curiosity and innovation. But amidst the busy space, Sonic found a strange solace. The gentle hum of machinery and the faint smell of metal and oil were familiar comforts after the tumultuous battles that had come to define the past year.

The blue hedgehog's thoughts drifted to his friends, especially Amy. Her fiery spirit and unwavering belief in him had been the beacon that guided him through the darkest moments of their adventures. He remembered her laugh, the warmth in her eyes, and the way she'd always know exactly what to say to cheer him up. His heart skipped a beat as he pondered whether he was ready to take their friendship to the next level. It was a feeling that had been building within him, like a pressure cooker slowly reaching its boiling point.

Tails looked up from his tinkering, noticing Sonic's distant gaze. "Everything okay, Sonic?" he asked, concern etched into his furry brow. Sonic snapped back to reality, clearing his throat awkwardly. "Yeah, just...thinking about the Chaos Emeralds," he lied, quickly changing the subject. The fox nodded, his eyes returning to the wires and gears scattered before him. The truth was, Sonic hadn't been able to shake the feeling that there was something more to find than just the emeralds.

The silence grew heavier as Sonic's thoughts grew louder. He knew that confessing his feelings would change everything. The weight of the decision bore down on him, a tangible presence that seemed to make the air in the room thicker. Yet, as he looked at Tails, so focused on their shared goal, he couldn't help but feel a pang of hope. If he could conquer the trials of the Starfall Islands, surely he could navigate the uncharted waters of romance?

"Hey Tails, have you had any luck with the emeralds?" Sonic finally asked, breaking the quiet. The fox's ears perked up, his eyes lighting up momentarily before the glow of the screens washed over them again. "Not yet, Sonic," Tails replied, not looking away from his work. "The scanners are running, but they're still off the radar."

Tails paused, his hands hovering over the glowing circuitry. "It's odd, really. After everything we've been through, you'd think they'd want to make themselves known." Sonic nodded in agreement, his mind racing with scenarios. "Could they be in some kind of protective mode?" he suggested, his voice a mix of excitement and concern. "Maybe they know we're looking for them and are hiding to keep from falling into the wrong hands."

Tails considered the idea, his mind racing with possibilities. "It's not out of the question," he murmured, his eyes narrowing as he typed furiously into his computer. The screen flickered with new data, displaying a map with a series of pulsing dots. "But these readings are strange. It's like... they're not just hidden. Like they're scattered across different dimensions or something."

Sonic leaned over the desk, eyes wide with curiosity. "So, we might have to hop through some wormholes again?" His voice held a hint of excitement for the thrill of the chase. "Or maybe a place with energy from different dimensions?" he mused aloud, his mind racing ahead to the potential adventure.

"Could be," Tails replied, his tone serious. "We need to be prepared for anything. Those emeralds are powerful, and if they're scattered like that, it means we're going to face some serious challenges." He turned to his friend, his expression a mix of determination and caution. "We'll need to work together more closely than ever, Sonic."

Sonic nodded solemnly, the gravity of the situation sinking in. "You bet. Keep searching buddy, I know you'll find them," he said, his voice firm. "But speaking of working closely..." His gaze drifted to the side, and he took a deep breath, "I actually could use your help with something else."

_____

Back at home, Amy sat cross-legged on her bed, surrounded by a sea of plush pillows. Her quills were a mess from a rough night of sleep, sticking out at odd angles like a porcupine after a tussle. With a gentle sigh, she picked up a small brush and began to smooth them out, one by one. Each stroke was meticulous, a testament to her patience and care. It was a calming ritual, a way to process the adrenaline and emotion that came with fighting alongside her friends.

Her thoughts wandered to Sonic. He'd been acting differently lately, more pensive than usual. It was endearing in a way, but it also made her stomach twist with a nervous excitement she couldn't quite place. Was it possible that he had finally come to feel the same way she did? That the bond they'd shared for so long had grown into something more profound? She'd caught glimpses of it, a look here, a gesture there, but she didn't want to get her hopes up.

Amy set the brush down, her gaze drifting to the window. Outside, the dawn was breaking over the horizon, casting a warm glow over the treetops. She knew that her heart was racing faster than the hedgehog she loved. But she also knew that she had to be realistic. Sonic had never shown romantic interest in her before, not like that. And she had to accept that maybe he never would. The thought stung, but she steeled herself against it. After all, she had so much to be grateful for. Their friendship was a treasure she wouldn't trade for anything. Right?

The sudden sound of a knock at the door startled her from her thoughts. Her heart jumped into her throat as she swung her legs over the side of the bed. "Coming!" she called out, trying to keep her voice steady. She took a moment to compose herself, smoothing down her dress and patting her cheeks for a bit of color. With a deep breath, she opened the door to find Sonic standing there, his expression a mix of uncertainty and excitement.

"Hey, Amy," he began, his voice a little too casual. "I was wondering if you'd like to go for a walk with me?" The question hung in the air, charged with an electricity that made the fur on her arms stand on end. She looked into his eyes, searching for any clue to what he might be feeling.

"Sure, Sonic," she said, trying to keep her voice as even as possible. "Let me just grab my shoes." She stepped away from the door, giving him a small smile as she slipped on her sneakers. When she turned back around, he was still there, looking at her with an intensity that made her heart flutter.

The two of them stepped out into the early morning light. The air was crisp and clean, the dew on the grass cool. As they walked, their conversation was easy and familiar, filled with the comfort of old friends. But there was an underlying tension that neither of them could ignore.

"How's the search for the Chaos Emeralds going?" Amy asked, breaking the silence that had fallen between them. Sonic's eyes flickered with excitement before he shrugged. "It's a bit of a puzzle," he said. "They're not where they're supposed to be."

"Tails is pretty good at puzzles," Amy said, trying to keep the conversation light. Sonic nodded. "Yeah, he is. But this one might be more than even he can handle."

They strolled down the path that wound through the forest, the leaves crunching beneath their feet. The early morning light filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the ground. Sonic's mind was racing with thoughts of what he wanted to say to Amy, but he couldn't find the right words. Instead, they talked about their favorite moments from their last adventure, sharing laughs and memories.

Then, without warning, the atmosphere shifted. The sky, which had been a serene blue just moments ago, began to darken as clouds rolled in from the horizon. They grew thick and ominous, blotting out the sun in a dramatic display of nature's power. The temperature dropped, and the air grew heavy with moisture.

Sonic looked up, his eyes widening as the first few droplets of rain began to fall. "Looks like we're in for a bit of a shower," he said with a nervous chuckle, trying to play it cool. Amy nodded, her heart racing as the rain grew from a gentle patter to a steady downpour. The drops grew larger, plinking off the leaves and splattering on the ground around them.

Without a moment's hesitation, Sonic spun around, his sneakers kicking up dirt as he dashed back to the workshop. In the blink of an eye, he reappeared, holding a clear umbrella with a silver handle. "Care to share?" Amy nodded, and Sonic opened the umbrella for the two of them.

As the rain grew heavier, Sonic stepped closer to Amy, holding the umbrella over both their heads. The rain pattered against the umbrella, creating a comforting rhythm that seemed to muffle the sounds of the downpour. They huddled together under the small shelter, their bodies close enough to feel the warmth radiating from one another.

"Thanks for this," Amy said, her voice barely audible over the rain. Sonic nodded, his gaze fixed on the path ahead. "No problem," he replied. "We wouldn't want you to get wet, after all." He tried to keep the conversation light, but his thoughts were racing. He knew he couldn't put it off much longer. He had to tell her.

As they approached the edge of a lake, Sonic spotted a small covered area that looked dry. "Hey, why don't we sit for a bit?" he suggested, pointing to the spot. Amy looked up, her eyes lighting up at the sight of the shelter. "That's a great idea," she said, her voice carrying a hint of relief.

They sat down on a wooden bench, the scent of wet earth and fresh leaves filled the air, mingling with the faint aroma of the nearby flowers. Sonic felt a strange mix of nervousness and anticipation, his heart thumping in his chest.

He turned to Amy, ready to confess his feelings, but paused. Her eyes, usually alight with energy and spirit, held a hint of sadness that tugged at his heartstrings. She'd tried to hide it behind a smile, but Sonic had known her long enough to recognize the signs.

"Amy, is everything okay?" Sonic asked gently, his voice cutting through the steady rhythm of the rain. She looked up at him, her smile faltering for a brief moment before she nodded. "Yeah, I'm fine," she said, her voice a bit too bright. But the sadness remained, a silent testament to whatever was troubling her.

Sonic's heart clenched at the sight. He knew Amy well enough to see that she wasn't fine. But he also knew her well enough to know that she'd clam up if he pushed too hard. So, he took a different approach. "You know, you don't have to be strong all the time," he said, his eyes searching hers. "You can tell me."

Amy took a deep breath, her gaze dropping to her lap. "It's just... I can't shake this feeling," she began, her voice quiet. "It's like... I don't know. Like I've been waiting for something to happen, but it never does."

Sonic felt a knot in his stomach. He knew exactly what she was talking about, but he didn't want to jump to conclusions. "Something like what?" he prompted, his voice gentle.

Amy took a deep breath, her eyes meeting his with a mix of hope and vulnerability. "I know it's dumb, but... I can't help but think… if I didn't know any better, I would think this is all some kind of... romantic setup." Her cheeks flushed a deep shade of pink. "I mean, here we are together, in the rain, sharing an umbrella. It's like something out of a mushy romance novel."

With a serious face, she continued, "But I do know better." The sadness in her eyes was palpable, even in the dim light. "But a girl can dream, can't she?"

Sonic's heart sank. He had been so focused on his own feelings that he had failed to see the pain he had been causing her. All those times he'd brushed off her affections, all those years of assuming she'd always be there, waiting for him to realize his own feelings. It dawned on him that maybe she had finally reached a breaking point. She had actually gotten to the point where she has given up hope that he will ever reciprocate her feelings.

He took a moment to gather his thoughts, the rain a comforting backdrop to his tumultuous emotions. Then, with a determination that could rival his speed, he reached out and took her hand. "Amy," he said, his voice earnest. "Look at me." She raised her gaze, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I've been a jerk. I've been so caught up in the adventure, in the thrill of the chase, that I didn't see what was right in front of me."

Sonic's grip tightened, the rain now a gentle backdrop to their conversation. "When you were stuck in Cyber Space, I was lost. The idea of losing you...it was like my world was crumbling around me." He paused, searching her eyes for any sign of understanding. "You're not just my best friend, Amy. You're more than that."

Her heart skipped a beat, hope flickering like a candle in a storm. "What are you saying, Sonic?" she asked, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and excitement.

Sonic took a deep breath, his eyes never leaving hers. "I'm saying that maybe it's time for us to explore what could be. To see if there's something more to us than just friendship." The words hung in the air, heavy with meaning.

Amy's eyes widened, a torrent of emotions playing across her features. Surprise, hope, fear, and joy all fighting for dominance. She bit her lower lip, unsure of what to say. Sonic felt his heart racing, the anticipation of her response a physical force.

The rain grew heavier, the droplets falling faster and harder against the fabric of the umbrella. The sound was like a drumroll in Sonic's ears as he waited for her to speak.

Amy took a deep breath, her eyes searching Sonic's face for any hint of what might come next. "Sonic, I've... I've felt this way for a long time," she admitted, her voice shaking. "I didn't want to push you into something you weren't ready for."

Sonic's heart swelled with affection for her. "I know," he said, squeezing her hand gently. "But I've come to realize that I might be ready now." He paused, watching the rain dance around them. "I know you said you wanted to go on a mission to spread your love with the world. Maybe you'd like to start with me."

Sonic looked Amy in the eyes, "I want to try, Amy. If you do too."

The moment hung there, suspended in the air around them like the raindrops on the edge of the umbrella. Amy's eyes searched his, looking for any sign of doubt or uncertainty. But what she found instead was a look of earnestness that made her heart race. She felt like she was standing at the edge of a cliff, looking down at a world of possibility.

Then, without a word, Sonic leaned in. His eyes closed, his breath warm against her cheek. The rain around them seemed to slow, the world outside their little bubble fading away into the background. It was a moment she had dreamed of, a moment that seemed like it was finally happening. But just as his lips were about to touch hers, she pulled back, her hand coming up to rest against his chest.

Her heart pounded in her own chest, a mix of fear and anticipation coursing through her. "Sonic, I-" she began, her voice a whisper. Sonic's eyes snapped open, a look of shock and confusion crossing his face. He had thought he had read the signs correctly, that she felt the same way he did. But now, as he saw the uncertainty in her eyes, he realized that maybe he had moved too fast.

Before she could say anything more, a static crackle filled the air, and Tails' panicked voice blared through Sonic's communicator. "Sonic! You guys need to get back to the workshop now! I've found the Chaos Emeralds!"

The sudden interruption brought them both back to reality. Sonic's eyes went wide, and he jumped to his feet, the urgency in Tails' voice snapping him out of his trance. "We're on our way!" he called into the communicator, his heart racing. He turned to Amy, whose face was a whirlwind of emotions.

"Sorry," he mumbled, feeling the weight of their unfinished conversation. "Duty calls." He offered her his hand, and she took it, her eyes never leaving his. They sprinted back to the workshop, the rain now a side note to the tumult of feelings between them.

_____

As Sonic entered the workshop, Tails looked up from his workstation, his face full of excitement. "How'd the walk go?" he blurted out, then immediately added, "did you tell her? Can I turn off the weather machine now?"

Sonic felt his cheeks heat up. But before he could respond, Amy stepped into the room. She looked a bit flustered, her hair clinging to her face from the rain. Tails' face turned a deep shade of red as he stumbled over his words. "Oh, hi Amy! I didn't see you there!"

But Amy's eyes never left Sonic's. She gave him a knowing smile that spoke volumes. "Clearly," she said, her voice full of mirth.

Sonic cleared his throat, trying to shake off the awkwardness that had settled over them. "So, Tails," he said, changing the subject with forced casualness. "You said you found the emeralds?"

Tails nodded, his eyes darting between Sonic and Amy, sensing the shift in the air. "Yeah, I figured out why they were off the radar," he began, his excitement evident. "They weren't hidden. They were right where we left them."

Sonic's eyes narrowed. "Back on the Starfall Islands?" He couldn't believe it. They'd been through so much there. The battles, the loss, the discovery of the ancient ruins - it was a place etched into their collective memory.

"Exactly!" Tails exclaimed, his excitement palpable. "Which would explain those weird readings we saw earlier."

"But why would they be there?" Amy wondered aloud, wiping the rain from her face.

Tails' tails swished back and forth in excitement. "It seems like the islands are some kind of nexus point for the emeralds," he explained, his hands gesturing wildly as he talked. "Their power is tied to the land itself. The ruins we found must have been built to contain and channel their energy."

"So will they always just go there forever now?" Sonic asked, trying to wrap his head around the revelation. "Maybe, but I have an idea to fix that," Tails said, a spark in his eye.

He led them to a corner of the workshop, where a new contraption sat gleaming under the lights. It was a sleek, round device with a series of antennae sticking out at various angles, wires snaking around the base. At the center was a clear crystal, pulsating with an eerie blue light. "Check this out," he said, flipping a switch.

The crystal in the center of the device grew brighter, and the antennae began to whirr to life. A soft hum filled the room, growing in intensity until the air around the contraption began to shimmer. "It's a Chaos Emerald Attractor!" Tails exclaimed, beaming with pride. "Whenever the emeralds are scattered again, this should draw them to us!"

Amy stepped closer, her eyes wide with amazement. "Tails, that's incredible," she said, her voice filled with genuine admiration. "You're always coming up with the coolest gadgets."

"Thanks, Amy," Tails said, his cheeks reddening slightly. "But we've got to get moving. We're gonna want to get to the emeralds before anyone else."

Sonic nodded in agreement, the urgency of the mission pushing aside the personal revelations of moments ago. "Let's get going, then," he said, his eyes meeting Amy's briefly. The unspoken conversation between them was left to be continued.

"I'm coming with you," Amy declared, a steely resolve in her voice that brooked no argument. She knew that the Chaos Emeralds were a serious matter, and she wasn't about to be left behind while Sonic and Tails faced another challenge.

"But, Amy-" Sonic began, his concern clear.

"No buts, Sonic," she interrupted, her gaze unwavering. "I've been fighting alongside you for years, and this mission is no different."

Sonic hesitated, glancing at Tails for support, but the fox was already nodding in agreement. "Alright," he conceded, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. "Let's get geared up."

They dashed around the workshop, collecting their equipment. The air was thick with excitement and a touch of unspoken tension as they prepared to face whatever challenges lay ahead on Starfall Islands. Sonic couldn't help but steal glances at Amy, her fiery determination setting his heart racing in a way that had nothing to do with their impending mission.

Underneath his gloves, his hands felt clammy as he thought about the almost-kiss on the bench. Why had she pulled away? Was it something he'd said or done? Or was it because she didn't feel the same way anymore? His mind reeled with questions and doubt, but he pushed them aside. Now was not the time for romance. They had a job to do, and he had to keep his head in the game.

About to board the Tornado, Tails' ears suddenly twitched and he felt an eerie sensation creep up his spine. He looked around, scanning the surrounding area, but saw nothing amiss. He shrugged it off, attributing it to his overactive imagination. With a final nod, the trio climbed aboard the Tornado, eager to face the excitement that lay ahead.

The engines of the Tornado roared to life, the iconic aircraft shaking gently as it lifted off the ground. Sonic took a deep breath, feeling the familiar rush of wind in his quills as they soared through the clouds.
