Notes:

The sequel to Starfall is here! I hope this one goes as well as the first one did. I decided to make this a trilogy, so here is part 2, and part 3 will be posted shortly after, as I am going to write them back to back. To space them out, I am going to do a Silvaze in-between that was requested.

A couple of disclaimers: I do not own these characters, this is a work of fanfiction. This story was written with the assistance of an AI generator, but it WAS NOT written by AI directly. All the ideas in this story are my own.

Hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1: The Blood Rings are coming...

Chapter Text

A few months since Starfall…

In the scorching sands of Sandopolis, a figure emerged from an ancient pyramid. Shadow the Hedgehog, stoic and solitary, had just completed a mission that had taken him deep into the heart of the desert. The sun blazed down upon him, casting a fiery halo around his silhouette as he paused to catch his breath.

Strangely, the air around Shadow felt different—lighter. He had felt it for weeks now, an unusual sense of peace that seemed to follow him wherever he went. The dark hedgehog, known for his brooding nature and solitary ways, couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed within him. As he took in the vast expanse of the desert, the warmth of the sun on his fur, and the gentle whisper of the wind carrying the scent of ancient secrets, he couldn't help but ponder this newfound serenity. Was it the recent victory against the forces of chaos? Or perhaps the quiet moments of reflection that had been forced upon him during the long stretches of his journey?

Whatever it was, Shadow found it both unsettling and comforting. It was as if the weight of his own tumultuous past had been lifted slightly, allowing him to breathe a little easier. The desert heat had always felt like a burden to him, a constant reminder of the fiery anger that often fueled his actions. But today, it felt almost soothing, a gentle embrace that seemed to tell him that he was not alone in his struggles.

Just as he was about to ponder this further, a sudden movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention. Instinct took over, and he used his Chaos Control to teleport away just in time. The sound of a body slamming into the pyramid wall echoed through the desert, and Shadow's eyes narrowed as he took in the dusty figure that emerged from the cloud of sand.

It was a slender robotic form that he knew all too well, his chrome exterior gleaming even in the harsh sunlight. "Metal Sonic," Shadow said, his voice a low growl. "What brings you out-"

But as the dust cleared completely, the figure's true identity was revealed. It wasn't Metal Sonic that had emerged from the desert haze, but a twisted reflection of himself—a creature that could only be described as a Metal Shadow. The robot's eyes were cold and unfeeling, yet there was something eerily familiar in the way it carried itself, the way it moved, it was all a mirror image of Shadow's own actions.

Metal Shadow's dead, red rings for eyes glared into Shadow's gaze, unblinking and filled with a malicious intent that sent chills down his spine. It was like staring into the abyss of his own soul, a reflection of his darkest moments given form. For a brief second, Shadow felt a pang of fear—but only a second. He was the ultimate lifeform, the protector of the planet, and fear had no place in his heart.

The robotic doppelgänger charged at him, its metallic legs pumping like pistons as it tore across the sand. The air around them shimmered with heat, distorted by the intense speed of their movements. Shadow's muscles coiled, ready to spring into action. As Metal Shadow closed the distance, Shadow watched his familiar motions, the movements of skating on air with hover shoes.

The battle was a symphony of steel and speed, each blow resonating through the ancient setting. Shadow's chaos-infused strikes clashed with the metallic might of his adversary, sparks flying like embers in a fiery storm. They darted around each other, a blur of red and black, each trying to find an opening in the other's defense.

Metal Shadow's movements were a precise mimicry of Shadow's own, a testament to the advanced technology that had crafted him. Every time Shadow lunged with a powerful fist, Metal Shadow countered with a swift kick, every dodge and feint a mirror image of his own tactics. The sand beneath them whipped into a frenzy as their combat grew more intense, the air crackling with the electricity of their chaos abilities.

Shadow's eyes narrowed in focus as he studied his opponent's every move, searching for any sign of weakness or deviation from his own fighting style. His muscles burned with exertion, but he pushed on, unwilling to be bested by this metal mockery. The desert around them had turned into a battleground, each impact against the pyramid sending tremors through the ground.

Then it happened. Metal Shadow made a mistake, a slight misstep that was almost imperceptible to the untrained eye. But to Shadow, it was as clear as day. He saw the opening and took it without a moment's hesitation, his fist shooting forward like a bullet. But as his hand connected with what should have been solid metal, the world around him blurred.

Metal Shadow had teleported away, leaving nothing but a cloud of sand. Shadow's fist clenched around air, his momentum carrying him forward, off balance. He stumbled, his feet skidding against the unforgiving stone. It was a move he hadn't anticipated, a trick that had never considered a robot could duplicate.

The metallic twin took the opportunity to strike, his hand glowing with the same chaotic energy that Shadow knew so well. The blow connected with a sickening crunch, and pain exploded through the hedgehog's body. He was thrown backward, the wind knocked from his lungs. The impact with the pyramid was like hitting a brick wall—but the wall didn't give.

Shadow's head swam as he tried to push himself to his feet. The sand was warm and unforgiving, clinging to his fur as if trying to hold him down. He couldn't believe it—his own power was being used against him. This wasn't just a simple copy anymore; he could see that Metal Shadow was something more, something that was made to surpass him.

He knew he couldn't fight the same way he had been. This wasn't a mirror match anymore; it was a battle of superior wits and strategy. Chaos Control was his signature move, but now it was a double-edged sword. Every time he tried to use it, Metal Shadow could follow him, leaving no advantage. He needed to adapt, to find a way to use his abilities that his twin wouldn't anticipate.

Shadow took a deep breath, the warm air filling his lungs and steadying his nerves. He focused his chaos energy into his eyes, the red hue of his irises flickering with power. He could feel the pulse of chaos within him, the power resonating with the ancient land around them. This place was steeped in history, in power—and he was going to harness it.

With a roar, Shadow lunged at Metal Shadow. But instead of the expected chaos blast, he sent a wave of sand spiraling around the robot, using the chaos energy to manipulate the desert itself. The sand whipped into a tornado, obscuring them both from view. When the dust settled, Metal Shadow was gone. Shadow had used the environment to his advantage, forcing the fight into a place where his enemy wouldn't be able to predict his next move.

Metal Shadow reappeared on the pyramid's ledge, his eyes scanning the area for any sign of the hedgehog. But Shadow was already in motion, climbing the ancient structure with a speed that seemed to defy gravity. The pyramid trembled beneath their combined weight, a silent witness to the power they wielded.

Shadow knew he had to keep the upper hand. He couldn't fight this creature with brute strength alone; he had to be smart about it. As he reached the top of the pyramid, he took a moment to assess his surroundings. The desert stretched out before him, a sea of sand and rock that held secrets that had been buried for millennia.

With a fierce determination, Shadow took a leap of faith, using his chaos powers to manipulate the air currents and glide towards Metal Shadow. The robot was quick to react, his metallic form launching into the air to meet him. Their chaos abilities collided mid-flight, a spectacle of red and black lightning that painted the sky with jagged streaks. Shadow felt the energy drain from his body with each clash, but he pushed through it, driven by the need to protect the very essence of who he was.

Their battle grew more intense, their movements a blur as they danced through the sky, leaving a trail of sand and lightning in their wake. Shadow's eyes remained fixed on his doppelgänger, his mind racing to predict the next move. He knew that in this high-speed game of chess, one wrong step could mean his end.

With a sudden burst of speed, Shadow shot towards the ground, using the chaos energy to propel himself through the air like a missile. He could feel the heat of the desert rising to meet him, the wind howling in his ears. He knew that if he didn't end this now, Metal Shadow would only become more powerful, more dangerous.

The robotic copy followed, his eyes locked on Shadow's descending figure. They met in a clash of steel and speed, the ground trembling as they collided. The desert around them was a whirlwind of sand and chaos, the very air charged with their power.

Shadow feigned a stumble, a deliberate mistake, and watched as Metal Shadow rushed to capitalize on it. At the last second, Shadow spun on his heel, using the momentum to hurl a chunk of ancient stone at his foe. It connected with a resounding clang, and for a moment, the robot's movements faltered. That was all the opening he needed.

Shadow's eyes glowed with a fierce light as he unleashed a barrage of chaos spears, each one aimed at Metal Shadow's joints and weak points. The robot dodged and weaved, but the sheer volume of the attack was too much to avoid. The first few spears pierced through the metal shell, leaving behind a trail of sparks. Each hit seemed to weaken Metal Shadow slightly, the once flawless mimicry of Shadow's movements now stuttering with the impact of each strike.

Seizing the moment, Shadow activated his chaos control and shot forward with a speed that even surprised him. He could feel the energy of the desert swirling around him, lending him strength and agility beyond his usual capabilities.

The final blow came swift and decisive. With a powerful kick to the back of Metal Shadow's head, Shadow watched as the robotic hedgehog staggered, his once unyielding form now wobbling unsteadily on the precipice of defeat. The chaos energy crackled around his foot, leaving a trail of crimson light in the air as it connected with the cold steel.

Metal Shadow's eyes, once a vibrant red, flickered and dimmed, the light of his power extinguishing like a candle in a storm. His body crumpled, a puppet with its strings cut, and he crashed to the ground with a thunderous impact that sent up a cloud of dust and sand. For a moment, everything was still.

Exhausted and sore, Shadow dropped to his knees beside the lifeless form of his mechanical twin. His chest heaved with deep, ragged breaths, the desert air scorching his throat. His heart pounded in his chest, a wild drumbeat that seemed to resonate with the very essence of the earth beneath him.

But amidst the quietude of victory, a sudden, unexpected sound pierced the silence. It was a beeping—steady and rhythmic, but not the frantic ticking of a bomb about to detonate. No, it was a pattern, a strange and unfamiliar tune that seemed to pulse with a life of its own. Shadow's ears perked up, and he stared at Metal Shadow in disbelief as the beeping grew louder. The sound continued, a puzzle piece that didn't fit, a question that begged for an answer. Shadow knew he had to find out what it meant, and he knew exactly who to turn to.

With a grunt of effort, he hoisted the heavy form of Metal Shadow over his shoulder and took off into a sprint, the desert blurring around him. His legs burned with the strain of carrying the additional weight, but he pushed through the pain. The robot was a potential treasure trove of information, a key to understanding what Eggman planned to do. Or was this... something more?

_____

At Tails' workshop, the young fox was surrounded by a symphony of beeping and whirring. The Chaos Emeralds lay spread out before him on a gleaming steel table, each one pulsing with a gentle light that matched the rhythm of his heart. He had spent countless hours studying them since their last adventure, trying to unravel the mysteries that lay within their crystalline depths. They were the lifeblood of their world, a source of power and hope—and also a source of fear and destruction in the wrong hands.

As Tails connected the last wire to the intricate machine he had built, he felt a twinge of excitement. The contraption was a marvel of his engineering genius, designed to analyze the emeralds on a deeper level. He had hoped that by doing so, he could unlock more of their secrets and perhaps even find a way to prevent them from falling into the hands of those who would abuse their power. His mind was a whirlwind of hypotheses and calculations, his eyes darting from the emeralds to his computer screens and back again.

But even the sharpest minds needed sustenance, and his stomach was not shy about reminding him of this fact. With a sigh, he straightened his back, rolling his shoulders to ease the tension. The beeping of his machines and the faint hum of his workshop were a comforting backdrop to his thoughts. He decided to take a break and grab something to eat, when he suddenly heard a different beeping sound.

As he turned, his eyes widened in surprise to see a figure standing in the doorway. It was Shadow, his arms cradling an unexpected burden—a crumpled, damaged robot that looked eerily similar to himself. The metallic frame was a twisted parody of the hedgehog's usual sleek form.

"Shadow?" Tails exclaimed, rushing to his side. "What happened? Is that..." His voice trailed off as he took in the lifeless form of Metal Shadow.

Shadow nodded. "It's a Metal me," he confirmed, his voice tight with a mix of anger and disbelief. "It appeared in Sandopolis and came at me without warning."

Tails' curiosity was piqued by the beeping that grew louder with each passing second. "What's that noise?" he asked, his gaze flickering to the emeralds before returning to the robot.

Shadow's eyes narrowed as he set Metal Shadow down with a thud on the table. "I was hoping you could tell me," he said, pointing at the robot. The beeping grew more insistent, almost as if it were trying to communicate something.

Tails leaned in, his fur-covered ears twitching as he focused on the pattern. "That almost sounds like... that sounds like morse code!" he exclaimed, his voice a mix of excitement and concern. He quickly grabbed a notepad and began scribbling down the dots and dashes as they grew clearer. His hands moved with a speed that matched the beeps, translating the robot's mysterious message.

Shadow watched, his arms crossed over his chest, as Tails worked tirelessly to decode the cryptic signal. Finally, Tails sat back, his pencil hovering over the notepad as he stared at the series of dots and dashes he had recorded. "It's definitely morse code," he murmured to himself, his brow furrowed in concentration. "But the message... it's not making any sense."

Shadow stepped closer, his curiosity overpowering his fatigue. "What does it say?"

Tails' eyes scanned the page, his lips moving silently as he translated the coded message. "The... the message is 'The Blood Rings are coming.'"

Shadow's expression darkened. "Blood Rings?" he echoed, his tone laced with skepticism. "What kind of nonsense is that?"

Tails shrugged, his confusion evident. "I have no idea. I've never heard of them, or whatever it is." He tapped the notepad with the tip of his pencil. "Could be a code, a warning, or just the last gasp of a damaged system."

Shadow's gaze didn't leave the robot. "I don't like it," he murmured, his voice low and tense. "Whatever it is, it can't be good."

Tails nodded, his eyes still on the page. "I agree. But we won't know for sure unless we investigate." He looked up, his gaze meeting Shadow's. "Let me do an autopsy on it and see if I can find out anything."

Shadow's expression was grim, but he nodded in understanding. "Fine. But hurry up. This thing gives me the creeps."

Tails rolled his eyes good-naturedly. "What's the matter, Shadow? Afraid of yourself?"

Shadow glared, his teeth bared. "Tails," he warned, the edge in his voice sharper than the chaos spears he had just thrown.

The fox's cheeky smile didn't falter. "Oh, come on, Shadow," he chuckled, holding up his hands in a placating gesture. "I'm just messing with you."

Shadow's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenched tight. "Don't push it, Tails," he growled. The tension in the room was thick, palpable, like the humidity before a storm.

But Tails remained unfazed, his grin never faltering. "Look, you're obviously not going anywhere until I figure this out," he said, gesturing to the robotic mess on the table. "Why don't you go grab us something to eat?"

Shadow stared at him for a long moment before letting out a frustrated huff. "Fine," he said, turning on his heel. "But if I come back and I see Sonic here, I'm not going to be happy."

Tails' smile grew wider. "Don't worry, I'll keep it between us," he promised, already eager to dive into the mysteries of Metal Shadow's inner workings.

_____

Fifteen minutes later…

The door to the workshop slammed open with a gust of wind that ruffled Tails' fur. Shadow strode in, his arms laden with a paper bag that smelled heavenly of sandwiches. He noticed that the beeping had ceased. The fox looked up from his work, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Ah, perfect timing," he said, his stomach rumbling.

Shadow's eyes were fixed on the open carcass of Metal Shadow that lay on the workshop table. The robot's head was tilted back at an unnatural angle, revealing a tangle of wires and circuitry that resembled a mechanical brain. His body had been sliced open, the gleaming metal interior laid bare for all to see.

"Find anything?" Shadow asked, his voice gruff as he handed Tails a sandwich. The fox took it gratefully, his stomach giving a loud growl of protest at the delay. He took a large bite, speaking around a mouthful of food. "Lots," he said, gesturing to the robot. "I've never seen anything like it. Well actually I have, which is why I haven't."

Shadow rolled his eyes, patience wearing thin. "No riddles, Tails," he said firmly. "What is it?"

Tails took a bite of his sandwich before responding, chewing thoughtfully. "Well, as we know, Metal Sonic was created by Eggman," he began, swallowing. "And all of his robots share certain characteristics in their circuitry, like a signature, if you will." He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, his gaze returning to the robot. "But Metal Shadow here, his circuitry is different. It doesn't match."

Shadow's ears perked up. "Different how?"

Tails took another bite before speaking again, his eyes never leaving the robot. "Well, for one thing, the circuitry... it's mine," he said, his voice filled with astonishment. "Just by looking at the inner workings, I'd say the inventor of Metal Shadow is... me."

Shadow's eyes widened in surprise, his sandwich momentarily forgotten. "What?" he exclaimed, setting it down. "You built it?"

"No, no!" Tails said quickly. "I didn't! I swear! But it's definitely based on my designs. The circuitry, the structure... it's all identical to my work." He took a deep breath, trying to organize his racing thoughts. "The only explanation that makes sense is that Eggman built it, but used my tech to do it. But why would he do that?" He picked at the edge of his sandwich, his mind working overtime. "It doesn't make sense, he's always used his own designs, why steal mine for this?"

Shadow's gaze hardened. "Maybe he's running out of ideas," he suggested darkly. "Or maybe he's trying to get inside our heads, make us question ourselves."

Tails nodded thoughtfully, munching on his sandwich. "That's very possible," he said after a moment. "But it's also possible that this has nothing to do with Eggman at all. We can't rule out that there might be another player in the game."

Shadow's gaze grew distant as he considered this. "Someone else with access to your tech," he murmured, his mind racing. "Someone who knows me well enough to build something like this."

Tails nodded in agreement. "Exactly. And whoever it is, they're playing a dangerous game." He gestured to the robot again. "This isn't just a copy. It's an evolution of you. Just like Metal Sonic was to Sonic."

Shadow grunted. "And the 'Blood Rings'? Did you figure that out?"

Tails shook his head, his gaze still focused on the robot. "Not yet," he murmured. "But there's still some things I can try." He took a sip of his soda, the carbonated bubbles popping against the roof of his mouth as he chewed on the straw.

Shadow nodded, watching his friend with a mix of admiration and wariness. Tails was a genius, no doubt about it. But even he had his limits. And this... this was something beyond their usual battles with Eggman's contraptions. This felt personal.

Tails took a final bite of his sandwich, wiping his mouth with a napkin before diving back into his work. His nimble hands danced over the open chassis of Metal Shadow, probing and prodding as he searched for answers. The robot's gleaming insides looked almost organic under his touch, a testament to Tails' mastery of technology.

Shadow leaned against the table, his arms crossed over his chest as he observed the fox. The silence in the workshop was punctuated only by the occasional beep from Tails' scanning device and the soft rustling of paper as he made notes. His eyes never left the robot, his thoughts racing as he tried to piece together the puzzle that had been thrust before them.

Suddenly, there was a spark, a tiny flicker of life that grew brighter by the second. Tails' hand hovered over a particular wire, and with a deep breath, he connected it to the robot's head. The red eyes of Metal Shadow snapped to life. Shadow tensed, his muscles coiled like a spring ready to pounce, but Tails didn't flinch.

Shadow stepped closer, his arms still tense, ready to leap into action. "Tails, what did you do?"

Tails held up a hand to silence him, his eyes never leaving the robot. "I think... I think I might have found something," he whispered, his voice hushed with a mix of excitement and dread. The red eyes of Metal Shadow remained on, seemingly alive yet devoid of any hostility.

He leaned in closer, peering into the depths of those crimson circles. The longer he stared, the more they seemed to morph before him, the color deepening into a rich, crimson hue. The image grew hazy, and suddenly Tails felt as if he was seeing through them, into another place entirely. A place filled with... red circles, red rings, pulsing with a sinister energy. "Blood Rings…," he murmured.

Shadow's eyes snapped to Tails, his expression a mix of confusion and concern. "What?"

Tails' voice was filled with excitement as he pointed at Metal Shadow's eyes. "Blood Rings!" he exclaimed. "The red eyes are the Blood Rings! Just like Metal Sonic's!" His revelation hung in the air, a sudden realization that made everything fall into place. Shadow's grip on the table tightened, his gaze locked onto the robot's unblinking stare.

But the understanding eluded him. "What are you talking about?" he asked, his voice tight with tension.

Tails' excitement was palpable as he rushed over to his computer, pulling up images and data files. "Look," he said, pointing at the screen. "Metal Sonic has red eyes, see? And so does this guy. But you and Sonic, your eyes are red and green, respectively. The real versions, if you will, don't match, unlike your robot counterparts."

Shadow stared at the screen, his brow furrowed in thought. "What does that have to do with anything?" he asked, his voice skeptical.

"I think everything," Tails said, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Based on all the data I have, I think Metal Sonic must be behind this somehow! 'The Blood Rings are coming' must be a warning that he's back!"

Shadow stared at him, his mind racing. "Does that even make sense?" he questioned, his voice filled with skepticism. "Why would Metal Sonic make a robot of me? And why call himself 'Blood Rings'? And warn us of his return?"

Tails paused, his hands hovering over the keyboard as he considered Shadow's words. "I'm not sure," he admitted. "But it's definitely a lead worth investigating. And if Metal Sonic is involved, we can't ignore it."

Shadow nodded slowly. "Agreed," he said, his voice tight with determination. "So what are we going to do?"

Without speaking, Tails turned back to the robot, his thoughts racing. His nimble fingers moved with a grace that belied the urgency of their situation. His mind was a whirlwind of theories and questions, all centering around the mysterious "Blood Rings." Who had really built this robot? What was the true nature of its creator? And what did it all mean?

Suddenly, as if struck by a bolt of lightning, he had an idea. He turned to the array of devices and gadgets lining the walls of his workshop, his eyes scanning over the cluttered shelves. His hand darted out, snatching a small, handheld device from a shelf. It was an old piece of tech, one he had tinkered with during his early days as an inventor—a signal booster.

He turned back to Metal Shadow, his heart racing with excitement. "Hold on," he murmured, his voice tight with anticipation. He connected a wire within the robot’s body, then flipped a switch on the device, and immediately, the beeping with the message came back. Tails' eyes grew wide with realization. "It's not originating from within the robot," he said. "It's being sent to it."

The two of them stared at each other, the implications of this revelation heavy in the air. "That means..." Shadow began, his voice trailing off as the reality of the situation sank in.

"Yes," Tails said, his voice solemn. "We can track the source of the signal." He turned back to the robot, his mind racing with possibilities. He turned off the beeping, and sat down at his workbench with a heavy sigh. His expression was one of deep concern, his tails swishing anxiously behind him. The weight of their discovery was settling in, and he knew that they were on the brink of something much larger than a mere robotic imposter.

"It's a trap," Tails murmured, his eyes narrowed as he studied the robotic doppelgänger. "That signal could have been programmed into Metal Shadow, but it wasn't. Metal Sonic, or whoever is behind this, wants us to track it."

Shadow nodded slowly, his mind racing with the same thought. "And when we do, we'll walk right into their hands." He stepped closer to Tails, his gaze intense. "But we can't ignore it. We have to know what we're up against."

Tails took a deep breath, his hands clenched tightly around the signal booster. "We need to tell Sonic," he said firmly. "I have a bad feeling about this."

Shadow's expression grew stormy, his jaw set in a stubborn line. "We can handle this," he said, his voice low. "We don't need to bring him into it."

But Tails was already shaking his head. "You know as well as I do, Shadow," he said, his voice calm but firm. "We can't do this alone. This is too big. We're gonna need help."

“But it doesn’t need to be his help,” Shadow's eyes narrowed, his arms folding over his chest as he considered Tails' words. "Track the signal. Find out where we're going."

With a nod, Tails set to work, his nimble fingers dancing over the console. The map on the screen flickered to life, a pulsing red dot appearing in the upper right corner. "Got it," he announced. "The signal is coming from Glacierland."

Shadow let out a brief and amused chuckle. "How useful do you think Sonic will be there?"

Tails didn't look up from his work. "Useful enough," he responded. "We’ll need all the help we can get."

Shadow's expression grew skeptical. "On ice?" he echoed, raising an eyebrow. "Sonic? That's like asking a fish to climb a tree. He's fast, sure, but he's not exactly graceful on the frozen stuff. We would spend more time watching out for him than fighting our enemies."

Tails looked up from his computer, his gaze meeting Shadow's. "That's a bit harsh, don't you think?" he said, his tone mildly defensive. "Sonic's gotten pretty good at adapting to new environments."

Shadow's eyes flashed. "Trust me, it's a bad idea," he said, his voice carrying the weight of his conviction. "Besides, can't you lead your own missions? Or do you need your boss with you at all times?"

Tails bristled at the accusation. "Sonic's not my boss," he shot back, his voice a mix of defensiveness and irritation. "He's my friend." He took a deep breath, trying to rein in his temper. "But that doesn't mean I can't handle this without him," he said.

He took a moment to mull over Shadow's words, his grip on the signal booster tightening. Tails knew Sonic's strengths and limitations better than anyone. Yet, he couldn't shake the feeling that Shadow might be onto something. Was he holding onto his leadership too tightly? The fox had come a long way since their early days together.

The thought of venturing into this new mystery alone, without the blue blur by their side, was a little terrifying. It was like a chance to step out of Sonic's shadow, to prove that he could be the hero his friend had always believed him to be. But it was more than just about proving something to himself, Sonic, or to Shadow. It was about facing his fears and growing stronger as an individual, as his own hero.

Tails knew that Sonic had enough on his plate currently, and that he couldn't be everywhere at once. Plus, he had seen how his friend had been dealing with the recent revelations about his feelings for Amy. The hedgehog needed time with his girlfriend, and Tails didn't want to burden him, or her, with yet another crisis.

This was his chance to prove himself, to show that he could handle the situation without relying on Sonic for once. Tails' resolve grew stronger with each passing second, his eyes never leaving the pulsing red dot on the screen. He knew that Sonic had his own adventures, both internal and external, and it was time for him to step up.

"Okay, fine," Tails said finally, his voice steady. "No Sonic. But we should take someone." He knew that going alone was not an option. The stakes were too high, the dangers too great. They needed a team. And while Sonic's speed and bravado were certainly assets, there were others whose skills might be more suited to this particular challenge.

Shadow nodded, his expression thoughtful. "I know someone," he said, his voice low. "Someone who can handle the cold." His eyes lit up with an idea. "Blaze."

Tails looked up from his work, his gaze meeting Shadow's. "Good idea," he said slowly, the gears turning in his mind. "Her pyrokinetic abilities could come in handy there." He paused, considering the implications of their mission. "You find her and meet me there."

"Meet you where?" Shadow asked, his brows furrowed in confusion. "What are you planning?"

Tails paused in his work, looking up at Shadow with a glint in his eye. "I know someone else who can help us, so I'm going to track them down," he said, his voice filled with a newfound determination. "They're familiar with the area."

Shadow's expression grew curious. "Who?"
