It's so late when they get back to the Owl House. King was still a bundle of energy, parading around with his tiara, but everybody knew he would crash as soon as he got into bed. He was the first through the door, followed by Luz, who was barely standing on her own two feet.
Grom was something alright.
It was an understatement to say that she wasn't ready for the challenge. Facing her fears was a lot tougher and more deeply cutting than she originally anticipated. In hindsight, it made sense, but oh boy, did she bite off more than she could chew. The emotional turmoil would keep her up at night, but at the moment, all Luz wanted to think about was how amazing she felt.
"So, how was your first Grom, kid?" Eda asked with a knowing smile as she watched Luz light up.
"It was amazing," she said, although less energetic than the statement deserved. "I mean it was a lot, don't get me wrong. Fighting Grometheus was tough. I am exhausted."
Eda crossed her arms and leaned against the nearby drawer.
"You handled yourself well enough," she said.
"Well, I had help," Luz said, a faint blush working its way onto her face.
Fighting alongside Amity - or more like dancing? Dance-fighting? Yeah, let's go with that - it was a magical experience, pun a hundred percent intended. Luz put all her knowledge to the test, and the two of them synced up perfectly. She didn't have time to appreciate it in the heat of the moment, and in the celebration there after. But looking back at it-
She felt light, weightless, or maybe as if her arms and legs were made of noodles, as a soft, fuzzy feeling washed over her.
Dancing with Amity, combining their skills and magic, was indescribable.
And maybe if she played her cards right, maybe...
Oh, but what is she thinking? Amity was about to ask somebody to go to Grom. It would be wishful thinking to assume she would entertain the idea when she had her eyes set on somebody else.
But it was a nice thought.
Eda was still giving her that knowing smile, and Luz was suddenly horrified that she was that readable.
"What?" was all she managed to come up with. She could feel her face burning.
"Nothing," she shrugged and acted coy, but Luz knew what she was thinking about - it was written all over her face!
"Go, get some rest, kiddo," Eda beat her to whatever she would have said. "You had a long night."
Well, she couldn't argue with that. It was a long night, and an amazing one. She deserved a long night's rest, or two.
They held hands and they are offically girlfirends now - just like that. Luz thought that there would be some secret, magical, Boiling Isles version of courtship she had to fight her way through first. But on second thought, that heart attack she almost got from Hooty's ride did the job well enough.
Now Luz understood what butterflies in the stomach felt like.
And just what are they supposed to do now?
Even holding hands feels monumental. But thankfully, looking at Amity confirmed that she was just as much of a wreck as she was.
"This is- we are-," Amity was searching for words, her face red as a tomato, then she cracked into a nervous giggle.
"What?" Luz asked, she couldn't help but mimic Amity's smile - she had a beautiful smile.
"Sorry, it's just," she started. "This just feels so- exciting? I don't know."
Now it was Luz's turn to chuckle. "Yeah, I get it, I'm so nervous I could explode." She laughed, but then Amity's eyes turned wide, and Luz quickly waved with her other hand and hunched in on herself just a bit. "Sorry, sorry, I won't actually explode, just feel like it!"
"That doesn't feel pleasant."
She shrugged. "I can get used to it."
Amity smiled and shook her head. "You are weird, Luz."
She said her name slowly, and it sounded so nice coming from her. Oh, goodness gracious, is this how things are going to be from now on? Will she be tripping over everything her new girlfriend does?
"Good kind of weird, I presume?" Luz asked in a playful tone.
Amity pretended to think, then smiled. "Definitely."
Yeah, there was that feeling again. Those damn butterflies and the burning of her face. This will take some getting used to.
They are here to rescue her girlfriend. And Luz tried to pretend that she didn't feel like a fairy tale prince, rescuing her princess. Then Amity leaned in and kissed her on the mouth and Luz damn right almost fogot her own name.
It was their first kiss.
Their first official kiss that wasn't a quick peck on the cheek or blown through the air or- she couldn't come up with anything else at the moment, but the sentiment still stands.
It's a shame she couldn't bask in it. They had so much to worry about, then one thing happened after another. And then they were stranded in the Human Realm without any way back or any way of knowing what happened to everybody on the other side. So she had a lot going through her mind.
Only later did Luz think about it.
Their first real kiss. It filled her with warmth that she came to associate with Amity.
That kiss was probably the only good thing that happened that day. One little drop of sweetness in the sea of regrets.
She wished that it was under better, much happier circumstances. But she will take whatever she can get right now.
