Work Text:
Bonnie liked the darkness. As much as her general look and demeanour said otherwise, she too liked to be alone, letting the velvety cover of the night envelop her.
It was a relatively cold night for Ooo, aside from the Ice Kingdom. Bonnie shivered, wrapping her hoodie closer to her body. The air fogged up as she exhaled, gazing at the stars as she fingered absentmindedly at the blades of grass.
She loved the smell of dirt. That green, yet warm and comforting smell. It was reminiscent of some sort of childhood that Bonnie had lived thousands upon thousands of years ago, when she was just a baby gum. Even though the memory itself was hidden deep in the catacombs of her genius mind, she could appreciate the smell of the soil, and the sound of the worms wiggling through the crevasses, and the vibrant colours of the wildflowers.
“If this whole Candy Kingdom thing falls to shit, maybe I could start a Flower Kingdom” Bonnie thought, giggling to herself. With a sigh, she flopped down even harder, taking in the sensation of the ground beneath her.
Her loneliness wasn’t long lasting. When Bonnie opened her eyes, she was met with a mop of long black hair and grinning fangs levitating a few inches above her.
The owner of the hair extended a grey arm and tucked their hair behind their pointed ears.
“If it isn’t the pretty pink princess,” Marceline said with a wink. “I thought I was the only one prowling around here this late at night.”
Bonnie couldn’t help but snort, and propped herself up, glad to see a familiar face in the darkness.
“Glad to see you too, ya goof.” Bonnie snickered. She patted the grass beside her, and Marceline took a seat, flopping her head onto Bonnie’s shoulder.
“I couldn’t sleep, by the way. I needed to get some fresh air.” Bonnie said, after a few minutes of comfortable silence, each breathing in tandem with the other.
“I totally get that, Peebs. Sometimes you just gotta let out the bad vibes, ya know?”
“Haha, yeah.”
“Why here, though?” Marceline asked. “I mean, you kind of have a whole candy crib, decked out with like, twenty different balconies, right?”
“Nah, dude. This is the best spot. The stars are so clear here. In the Kingdom there’s too much light pollution. But you can really see all of them once you hit the fields.”
“Huh. Didn’t take you for an astronomy nerd. I’m always learning new stuff about you, huh?”
“You see those three stars in a row? That’s Orion’s Belt.” Bonnie said, raising a finger. Marceline followed it until she finally saw the constellation begin to form.
“And those are the Pleiades, and that reaaaaally bright one is Sirius.”
“Are you serious?”
“No, that’s Sirius” Bonnie said, trying and failing to hold in a giggle, which turned into a belly laugh.
Something about Marceline, her eyes that always looked like she was up to mischief, and the tips of her fangs poking out from under her top lip made Bonnie lose all of her inhibitions. Yes, she was supposed to be a prim and proper princess, but Marceline made her feel like a real person.
It helped that Marcy was in the same boat as her, with the whole living forever schtick. It helped Bonnie feel less alone, and her life less sanitised and sterile.
They both ended up on their backs, after their sides were sore from laughing, and Bonnie’s pink cheeks even pinker.
Marcy loved seeing Bonnie like this. Her laugh was so… addictive. Sugary sweet with just that little bit of bite. Like maple syrup.
She’d only seen Bonnie laugh like this a few times. That was part of the reason she kept falling for her, over and over again. Just to see her smile and let down her hair.
Bonnie rolled over onto her side, gazing at Marceline. Marcy gazed back.
“What’re you looking at, P?” Marceline said, with that flash of sharp teeth that made Bonnie fold.
“Oh, nothing. Just thinking.”
“Uh huh. Not your super sexy, punk rocker vampire crush?”
“Bit presumptuous, aren’t you?”
“I don’t know, I thought us dating for half a century put me firmly into crush territory.”
With a rustle of the grass beneath her, Bonnie shuffled into Marceline’s arms, taking in her smell of leather and red liquorice. Her breath on Marcy’s neck elicited goosebumps from grey skin.
“I thought you came here to stargaze?”
“I am,” Bonnie said, her voice muffled by Marceline’s clothes. “Got the prettiest one right here.” She pointed a finger and poked it into Marcy’s chest.
“Corny much?” Marcy teased.
“Okay, I guess that means no more cuddles for you.” Bonnie laughed, twisting and squirming as she tried (not really) to escape Marceline’s embrace.
“Noooooooooooooo…” Marcy groaned, burying her face into Bonnie’s hair. Her fingers rested on the ridges of the princess’ chest, tapping some random rhythm on her skin.
Both women would be lying if they said this situation wasn’t something they dreamed about. They were such hopeless fucking romantics. Yes, the sex was great, but when they saw each other so rarely, with Bonnie’s science work and Marcy’s music, sometimes spending time like this was orders of magnitude more fulfilling than clothes on the floor.
As much as both of them had lived for longer than the average human, they were exactly like lovesick teenagers. The only way for them to be even more nauseatingly romantic would be for Bonnie to make Marceline a flower chain.
Which she did. Of course. Marceline did not complain, suffice to say. The air suddenly felt a little warmer.
Bonnie, suddenly restless, got up on her feet.
“It doesn’t seem like I’ll be sleeping tonight. Wanna dance? I’ve got some dumb gala in a month, and I haven’t even practiced my waltz,” she said, reaching out a hand and helping Marceline up. “I brought a radio in case Pep But needed to find me but I’m sure we could find a good station, if you’re into that?”
“If you’re ready to meet the wrath of my two left feet, then sure.”
“Oh come on, you can’t be that bad!”
They were that bad. No matter the tempo of the music, or however much one tried to lead the other, the women were always bumping into each other or stepping on the other’s toes. It was a complete mess, but they were laughing so hard that tears were rolling down their faces.
Marceline led Bonnie into a dip, leaning her down so low that she was almost touching the ground, and she swore that she could see all of the stars twinkling in Bonnie’s eyes.
Damn, this girl was beautiful.
Bonnie’s hands grabbed Marceline’s face, pulling her in for a kiss. It was both hungry and calculated, spontaneous yet choreographed, perfectly Bonnie, flavoured like bubblegum. Marceline responded in turn, supporting the princess as much as she could, fighting the urge to drop to her knees, lest she drop Bonnie and ruin this fucking awesome moment.
“I really do miss you, Marcy.” Bonnie said, her voice twisted with a hint of guilt. “Between work and your music, I barely get time to see you, let alone be alone for more than 5 seconds. I’m glad you came to keep me company.”
“It’s no sweat, Peebs. I do have my phone for a reason. Just give me a buzz if you need, ‘kay? Or I could bust into your room ninja-style in the middle of the night. That works too.”
“Oh, decisions, decisions. However shall I choose?” Bonnie responded with a coy smile. “But seriously, sorry for being a bit of a junk girlfriend. I promise we will find some time to go on a date. Y’know. Like girlfriends do”
Bonnie sat down and blew a raspberry of defeat.
“Bonnie, I swear to Glob, there is nowhere else in Ooo I’d rather be than right here, right now. We danced under the stars! How is that not the most perfect date ever?” Marceline said, placing her head in Bonnie’s lap.
Bonnie stroked Marceline’s hair softly and smiled, feeling the weight of everything lift off her shoulders. She couldn’t remember the last time she got to take a break.
“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”
They dissolved into comfortable silence, together but otherwise alone in the tranquil darkness. It was just them, the stars, the moonlight and the wildflowers.
And they wouldn’t have had it any other way.
