Chapter Text
“ I hate you. I hope you know this,” the doctor grumbled from behind the door as he pulled on the costume. Laughter sounded from the other side at the statement before a loud reply from Dana came through. “Well, if you didn't wait so long and then ask me to ‘Just pick something, Dana. I don't have time,’ then you would have something else.” Two weeks ago, he handed over his card with orders to “just order something, I don't have time, Dana,” and this is how he ended up with a high-quality cat maid costume. He needed to check his transaction history; this was almost too nice in quality.
Robby decided wisely not to argue and continued to pull up his white knee-high socks, then put on the dress. He would need Dana to zip it up for him, but decided to wait for that embarrassment for as long as possible. The whole thing consisted of a maid's dress, fingerless gloves with paw prints on the palms, white knee-high socks with black bows, a headband with cat ears that had small bows and bells near the base of the ear, and a clip-on tail in black, and thankfully, black Converse hightops instead of heels that the model on the package had. Robby thought that at worst it would be a sexy nurse or doctor outfit, but this was not what he expected. Thankfully, the dress reached his knees, and Dana had enough heart to add shorts to the bag. While looking at himself in the mirror he dacides ‘Fuck it’ he was going to make this everyones elses problem and enjoy the night. He stepped out with the gloves and tail in one hand and shoes in the other. “ Could you zip me up and attach the tail?”
“ Sure, do you want help with the ears, too?” Dana asked as she finished her mascara. She was dressed as a ballerina and was stunning in her leotard, tights, wrap skirt, and leg warmers. “I was wondering if…”After the final touches, the two were on the way to the party; Dana applied light makeup around his eyes, which tied the whole look together.
The event took place in a nearby hotel ballroom, which was decorated to resemble a forest. Pop music played over the area at a comfortable volume as the place filled with guests. The theme was ridiculous: 'You can't hide your bad health,’ which meant it was a Halloween party in the middle of July. Younger staff have been whispering that it was a ‘Summerween’ party, whatever that means.
Walking in, the attending got a lot of stares and giggles as he made a beeline for the open bar. But before separating, the nurse grabbed his arm and motioned for him to lean down. “Almost forgot this,” Clipping something around his neck, straightening it out, and making sure it wasn't tangled up on the chain of his Star of David pendant. “ There, now it's complete. Have fun~” she called as she left him. Dana was caught up almost immediately by her fellow nurses, so he was alone in his trek to the bar.
After ordering his drink, Robby leaned against the bar and observed the event, trying to find those he knew. “Well, look what the cat dragged in. That is a mighty brave costume, Robinavitch,” a voice to his left stated. It was Dr.Peters from cardiology. He was in a simple suit with the button-up underneath undone, revealing the Superman logo, and wearing blocky glasses. “ Thanks, Dana picked it. And I must say she has an eye for fashion,” he replied with a little twirl and then grabbed his drink, looking for people he knew. He spotted Jack and made his way over to him. Robby was having too much fun with this; he decided to go all out and make the most of it. Doe eyes, flirty smiles, and playing innocent, he was not going to be the one embarrassed.
Jack has been waiting for Dana and Robby forever, and was getting bored. He only came to this because the nurse promised him it would be worth it, and she was wrong so far. That is when he saw Michael in the hottest thing imaginable, practically strutting his way. Fuck Dana out did herself with this, the dress, the ears, the collar, and fuck was that a tail too?
“Hey, Jack, nice costume, a vampire doctor fitting,” the day shift attending greeted, leaning against the table. Jack was dressed as a vampire doctor because he was clearly a man of imagination. The whole thing was just vampire fangs from an old costume that had made its way into his junk drawer, scrubs, a comically large name tag with"Dr. Acula" in big letters, and fake blood. It wasn't much, but by god, it was hot and doing things for Robby.
“ Well you know me Robby, I like to sink my teeth into things. So I’m guessing you let Dana pick your costume?”
“ What? You don't like it?” Robby said, spinning around slowly, showing it off. “I think it looks great. I might see if Gloria will let me wear it in the Pitt.” Robby replied as seriously as possible.
“ No, no, you look great, man. I don't see why she would be against it; it might help patient scores.” And with that, the two laughed in their own little world, not bothering to socialize with the rest of the party.
The two men talked briefly before two women approached them, one dressed as a bunny and the other as a zombie nurse. Jack recognized them vaguely as recently hired nurses from the Labor and Delivery department, so he greeted them first.
“Hi ladies, what can we do for you?”
“ Oh, we just wanted to introduce ourselves and were wondering what you had planned for after this. A few of us plan to head over to the Bear Paw after this. Would you like to join?” The bunny replied while the zombie nurse slid up next to Robby.
“ Hi there, I’m Michael, and this is Jack.” He introduced the two with an easy smile. After introductions were made. Robin, the zombie, seemed to get a little handsy with the older man, much to the discomfort of Robby and Jack's brewing jealousy. It was becoming clear that the women were more than a little tipsy and weren't taking the hint that the two doctors would not be leaving with them that night. So, the shorter man decided he needed to do something and moved to wrap an arm around the other man's waist, shifting some of his weight onto him. Without missing a beat, Robby took his weight and turned to ask him if he was alright. He wrapped an arm around Jack's upper back with his hand under the other arm, pulling him closer.
“ I think I reached my limit of being on my feet, wanna say our goodbyes and head out?”
“ Sure,” then addressed the two women apologetically, “ Sorry, not tonight. I guess we will be leaving soon for home. It was nice talking with you.” And both doctors moved their way through the crowds, still holding each other while they scanned the crowd for people they knew.
“ You are doing alright, right?” the taller man asks, squeezing Jack.
“ Yup, just wanted to get away from those two, hey, I think I see some of the kids over there,” Pointing over to a cluster of people around a circular table off to the side.” Let's go say hi.” Changing the duo's direction, Robby laughs a little in response.
The attendings arrive at the group, who are in the middle of a heated debate between Trinity and Samira over what is the best dark children's movie (at the time, it was between Frankenweenie and Coraline). The intern was dressed as Coraline, with temporarily dyed blue hair and a yellow raincoat. And the third year resident wore braided pigtails and the iconic Wednesday dress, tying the costume together. The two women were whispering, their argument forgotten.
“Holy shit Robby? What are you wearing?” Langdon asked in disbelief, cheeks flushed. If Jack recalled correctly, he was dressed as Flynn Ryder, having been forced to watch the movie while helping care for a sick Jake.
This gets everyone's attention, and gasps and whistles come from the group in response. Robby twirled and then turned his attention to Frank. “ A costume, Dr. Langdon. First time seeing one?” he replied with a smirk. The resident blushed furiously at the older man's attention and turned to cough, mumbling something.
“ Well, Robby, I think you look great,” Cassie interrupted. She was dressed as Kim Possible and looked great. This was another cartoon Jack was subjected to, but he did enjoy it.
“Thank you, Cassie. I think you look great, too, " he replied, grinning at the redhead. “Nice choice with Kim Possible.”
“I would way purrfect,” Trinity commented with a laugh high-fiving Mohan.
“ Yes, I agree absolutely pawtastic!” Samira chimed with agreement, and the two women toasted their glasses.
“Are you supposed to be a vampire doctor?” Questioned Mel as she rejoined the group holding two drinks and handing one off to Frank.
“Why, yes, Doctor King. I decided to go the easy route with stuff on hand,” he replied.
“You had fake blood on hand?” The blonde asked skeptically, which brought a smile to the attendings face, and before he could reply, Robby cut in. “Yes he does because he goes too far when it comes to practical jokes.” Shooting his conterpart a fake disaproving stare. Jack grumbled about how certain people deserved it.
The two doctors found chairs and joined the group in their discussion. Robby felt the handband being moved and turned his head to find Mel snatching her hand back with a startled look. She was wearing a low-key Rapunzel dress with her hair braided and flowers placed in it now clocking the character. Were her and Frank doing a couples costume?
“Sorry, it's just the ears looked really soft and I was curious.”
“It's alright, Mel just startled me, is all,” the attending reassured with a gentle smile. Jack nudged the other attending with his knee and motioned toward the bar. Both men excused themselves with a small list of orders to bring back. Jack observed Robby leaning against the bar, observing the other.
“You're enjoying this, aren't you?”
“Maybe, and maybe it will get me out of these stupid events in the future.” Jack made a sound, and somebody heading their direction caught his eye. “Oh shit Gloria is heading your way and she looks pissed.”
“Michael Robinavitch, what the hell are you wearing?” She said, lowly, trying not to bring more attention to the interaction
“ A costume, you know, the thing you told me I had to wear to this event,” he smirked. Gloria looked ready to tear him a new one, but she took a deep breath before stating that they would discuss the attire to wear to charity events and hospital functions. Jack was snickering through the entire exchange, not helping at all. When she finally stepped away, Robby joined in on the snickering, grabbed the drinks, and started on his way back to the group.
However on the way back Robby feels a slap on his ass and a wolf whislte. Before he can even turn around, Jack slams the drinks he had down on the nearest table and has the assailant's shirt collar in a death grip, backing the man up while growling threats in the man's face.
“What the fuck man that is not cool! Did anyone ever teach you to keep your hands to yourself? Huh? Not so brave when someone calls you out?” Releasing the attacker with a shove before hurrying back to Robby and the drinks. Jack moves to stand in front of the shocked doctor, giving him a quick look over.
“ Hey, are you okay, Robby? God, I’m so sorry that happened. Do you want to take these over and head home?” Robby felt a huge surge of shame wash over him; his cheeks flushed with the emotion. Jack's suggestion sounded wonderful, as all of the fun he was having disappeared.
“Yeah, let's go.” Nodding at the brunette's answer and wrapping an arm around his waist for the rest of the journey back to the residents. Jack took the lead in explaining their departure while Robby reiterated the excuse the shorter man provided. Once away from the group, Robby pulled out his phone and shot a text to Dana as the duo moved to the coat check.
“ Hey, wanna head back to mine and share an Uber?” Robby offered
“Sure, we can also finish that 90s B-rated horror movie,” Jack replied.
Soon, they arrived back at Robby’s place and into the living room. The taller man was sitting on the couch, working the laces to slip off the sneakers, when Jack blurted out.
“ You know you were really hot in that.” Fuck why did he say that? Shit! Robby looked up at him through his lashes, shooting him a grin before answering, “ Why, thank you, Jack. You know I haven't gotten to properly thank you for defending my honour, maybe we should do something about that?” Man, this stupid costume gave him the confidence to shoot his shot.
He was never going to tell Dana this; she would never let him hear the end of it. With no warning, Jack was straddling his lap, roughly kissing him before pulling back with a little nip to Robby’s bottom lip before growling, “Oh, sweetheart, you in this dress is more than enough. I don’t like people touching what’s mine, and you are *Mine*,” Emphasizing the last part with a grind of his hips. “Good, let's move this to my bed.” Robby teased.
