Mournful, watchful eyes lingered as the petal parted from the rose, trailing after the deep splash of red as it came to rest against a newly erected headstone. In the gloom, the limestone seemed to glow, as if the soul of the entombed body beneath the earth lingered on within it. A comforting fancy, but one that did little to assuage the grief of the lonely watcher.
It was not supposed to be this way. They ought to have had days, months, years ahead of them together, untroubled and carefree.
Tears cascaded in rivers through timeworn valleys and over weathered cheeks as delicate tendrils of shroud’s kiss reached for the stone, one last loving embrace to cradle its occupant close in death.
Once again, Emmrich was left behind.
