Emmrich Volkarin is a professor on a downward spiral following the death of his young son and the breakdown of his marriage, plagued by voices of the deceased and knowing nothing but dead ends.
She doesn’t want his help. He doesn’t want to be saved. Fate, on the other hand, has other ideas.

“There are no illusions here,” Emmrich told her. He was halfway down the braid now, fingers weaving soothingly through her hair. “Not between us, my dearest one.”
Shirin let him finish the braid in silence, though words, kept back, thrummed in the tension of her shoulders.
“I’m just tired of it, y’know?” she asked, seeming to speak more to her reflection than to him. Anger crackled under her quiet. “Cleaning up the so-called gods’ mistakes, seeing innocent people pay for those mistakes over and over again.”
Or: Emmrich imagines a future for himself and Rook, and Rook tries to imagine that future too.
