Lando always somehow found his way to George’s room. Even when he shouldn’t. Even when he was supposed to be anywhere else.
But now he didn’t have to. Now he could slip into George’s room without anyone there to interrupt. Well, maybe he had slipped away from Oscar, but at this point, he didn’t even want to talk to him. Not like this. Oscar wouldn’t understand—Oscar would just say he was sorry about the race. And the race was the last thing Lando wanted to talk about.
He opened the door to George’s room with the card he’d gotten back on Thursday, far from the eyes of the cameras. Their quiet ritual—exchanging spare room cards at the start of every race weekend. They didn’t always see each other. They couldn’t always. But it was something like a promise. Stability. Something Lando could come back to.
George was lying on the bed, clearly fresh out of the shower. Lando snorted at the sight. Of course George did everything like he was in fast-forward. Lando had barely changed out of his racing suit.
“You stink” George wrinkled his nose as Lando slipped onto the bed, right into his arms.
“Yeah, yeah, ruining your sheets” Lando laughed, not even moving away. He just snuggled closer to George, like he wanted to fuse their bodies together for good. “Guess you’ll have to sleep in my bed.”
“We’re not going all the way to your hotel at this hour” George rolled his eyes. Despite the complaint, he wrapped Lando tighter, cutting off any chance of escape—though Lando had no plans to run.
Lando knew George didn’t need sympathy about the race. Lando didn’t either. What they both needed was silence. Just being there together. Lando was usually loud, but with George, he didn’t have to pretend. With George, he could just... be.
“Will you come home with me?” Lando asked, though it sounded more like a plea. Quiet. Like he was afraid of the answer. And maybe he had a reason to be afraid. What they had wasn’t... official. It had been going on for years, but they never called it serious. But it was. Deep down, they both knew it.
“To yours? To Monaco?” George asked, confirming. Like a quiet plea of his own.
“Yes.”
Silence. But silence was their normal. Lando had learned that silence wasn’t always bad. With George, it was comfort.
“I will” George answered. “I’ll come home with you.”
A promise. And Lando could finally fall asleep in peace.
